Sopa Azteca
???

I've only had it once, years ago, and it was in an airport so I question it's authenticity, BUT it's so much fun saying the name!

oops (Oops), Friday, 5 November 2004 00:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah... I just bought a book of Oaxacan cooking. I made a tortilla and squash soup for dinner yesterday... was delic.

Dark Mole Oaxaqueno is the best!

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 6 November 2004 05:30 (twenty years ago)

I spent many a fine afternoon at El Oaxaqueno in New Brunswick, NJ -- Robert Sietsema of The Village Voice came out to review this once, claiming that, at least at the time, there was no Oaxacan in NYC. Hard to believe, isn't it?

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 06:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah... Orbit, have you been to the little Oaxequeno place on 6th in Koreatown?

Remy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 07:58 (twenty years ago)

Do you mean Guelazetzga?

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 11 November 2004 00:39 (twenty years ago)

yes!

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Great minds eat alike ;-)
Soot Bull Jeep is on 6th also, I think, or nearby (killer Korean BBQ)

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 11 November 2004 03:52 (twenty years ago)

so this is just like mexican, yeah? like how we have goan/sri lankan (etc) curry houses?

how do you pronounce it btw?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 11 November 2004 14:17 (twenty years ago)

wah-shakan I think

Strangely I was reading up about it about two weeks ago - interesting soups (the prospect of torilla soup intrigues me)

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:15 (twenty years ago)

Not "wah-hakan"?

Tortilla soup is very good. But it's something I think of as Mexican, rather than specifically Oaxacan, but I don't know from this Oaxacan beast, so.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:14 (twenty years ago)

It's wah-HAW-ken. Oaxaca is a state of Mexico that is down by Guatemala, so different in the types of spices and ingredients from the typical US Mexican-style food (which is mostly Sonoran).

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago)

That's how I was pronouncing it. ;-)

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 11 November 2004 23:13 (twenty years ago)

sorry I don'y know where that sh came in, I know it was wrong.

This is what I made for dinner: I had 9 people over, and the menu sounds really weird but it actually went quite well together:

Roasted pumpkin seeds with grated pastillo peppers and cashews
Nime chow & dipping sauce
Baked stuffed pork loin with mole coloradito
Oaxacan roasted root vegetables w/ cactus florettes
Apple cake
Ginger-flavored turkish delights (my own invention!)

Remy (x Jeremy), Friday, 12 November 2004 07:14 (twenty years ago)

You made turkish delights?

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 12 November 2004 07:32 (twenty years ago)

yup. they're surprisingly easy.

Remy (x Jeremy), Friday, 12 November 2004 15:54 (twenty years ago)

And did this party end with all 9 guests offering to have your babies?

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 12 November 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Did you roast the cashews and peppers with the pumkin seeds?

Josie, Friday, 12 November 2004 23:41 (twenty years ago)

yesh!

Remy (x Jeremy), Saturday, 13 November 2004 07:18 (twenty years ago)

(nobody offered me their baby, but I got drunk with my professor afterward)

Remy (x Jeremy), Saturday, 13 November 2004 07:18 (twenty years ago)

Aw Remy, I want to come over for dinner. That sounds wonderful!
