What is in season?

This came up from a mention of brussels sprouts in another thread, and I thought, "I wonder if they are in season?" And then I remembered that I really don't have a good sense of when various foods are in season.

So hopefully this will be a thread that is revived every so often when the rhubarb comes in to the farmer's markets or whatnot.

Obviously modern technological technologies allow for all sorts of things to be "in season" at all sorts of times, but we can ignore that for now.

Citrus season is about to hit big time, be on the lookout for cara cara oranges and minneolas and other things that are sometimes only available for a couple weeks. I end up squeezing and freezing juices I want to have available for marinades later.

It's funny now that you mention it, that we don't even know when things are in season because of greenhouses and importing/exporting. Especially in California where the growing season is year-round. The only way I can tell is by the sale prices!

I seem to remember that brussel sprouts are best just after the first hard frost. I think that goes for cabbages too.

Here's a good page. Right now, it looks like the following is in season:

Aubergines
Broccoli
Brussels sprouts
Cabbage
Red cabbage
Carrots
Cauliflower
Jerusalem artichokes
Leeks
Onions
Shallots
Parsnips
Potatoes
Swede
Turnip

This chart is even better.

I like buying with the seasons, because the vegetables taste better and are better for you (I think). Also, it's something to look forward to. Asparagus loses it's specialness when you have it all year round.
