Pears!

I have a pear tree in the backyard exploding (literally - it's kind of gross, rife with drunk wasps buzzing close to the ground) with Bartlett pears. I don't like pears raw and the only recipe I've ever tried is simply sauteeing in butter and sugar. Anything I can do to avoid letting all this food rot?

That's a very cool new development! However, I don't think Ian Pears has a recipe for me.

be creative!

ok now let someone with half an idea what they're talking about have a go

yeah I've tried but I am not a sweets kind of person and don't really like pears! Maybe I should look for some muffin recipes or something. If anyone in Toronto wants pears, come to my house!

We also have gigantic plums, which I also hate. Why can't there be a lasagna tree in my backyard?

Finefinemusic, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

chutney?

lauren, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 19:10 (sixteen years ago)

hmmm, not a bad idea. I love chutney on my eggs.

Finefinemusic, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

Imagine this as PEAR gnocchi

I know, right?, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 21:21 (sixteen years ago)

I think the flavours would work better!

First off, that's kind of weird, but OK.

Well, braise them savoury-style? With bay leaves. Makes them peppery. It's nice.

Or, you know, let them ferment, make pear brandy.

Or turn them into jam.

Also wtf how can you not like plums either! There are potatoes and beets in my backyard, which are fine, but oh I'd be happy if I had pears and plums...!

Casuistry, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

Or, make lots of salads with them. Some crumbly cheese too. Maybe stinky.

Casuistry, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

Ooooh, salad, didn't think of that! Thank you kind sir.

My housemate heard of a service on the CBC the other day - a non(or not-for)-profit will pick the trees clean and distribute to the needy, which is awesome, so she's calling them. I'll definitely have to sneak out and grab some pears for a salad though. And maybe a plum or two, just to double check if I do truly hate them like I suspect.

Finefinemusic, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 20:36 (sixteen years ago)

also wow, gnocchi sounds mad involved but satisfying - printing that recipe, thank you!

Finefinemusic, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 20:37 (sixteen years ago)

Plums are so good.

Just send them to me. I am needy. Ask anyone. If you need proof I will call you up and complain about my life and not let you off the phone and make it horribly awkward. Then I will eat your pears.

Casuistry, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

I tried to give a few to a friend tonight and it was dark so I may be mistaken but it seemed that they were gone! Perhaps my housemate called that organization and they acted quicker than I imagined..

We made pear pies and pear tarts last week. Gave em all away. They were really good!

I don't like pears raw

is this more or less crazy than not liking tomatoes raw?

Equivalent crazy, imo. Each time someone says something like this I think "Good - MORE FOR ME!"

Jaq, Friday, 26 September 2008 01:01 (sixteen years ago)

I mean there are plenty of foods I don't like, who am I to judge?

Actually it took me a while to warm up to pears. It wasn't until I had Harry & David pears that I understood. And Bartletts are hardly the most exciting pear out there.

Casuistry, Friday, 26 September 2008 04:23 (sixteen years ago)

The spit of land that I live on used to have tons of apple orchards. It's also overrun with blackberry bushes. I've already made jam and some blackberry apple crisp. I'm going out to scrump more apples tomorrow for sauce and apple butter.

kate78, Friday, 26 September 2008 04:27 (sixteen years ago)

When I was little, a neighbor had a gigantic (well, to a 7 year old) pear tree in his side yard. And we were absolutely forbidden to take any of the windfall. Of course, stolen fruit and all that.

While there are some things I simply can't eat (bell pepper, for example), there are very few things I actively dislike. Overcooked liver. Tofu dogs. Fake cheese. Maybe one or two other things. Maybe I'll get more particular in my dotage.

kate78, that sounds so good. If you need any help picking, I'm only 2.5 hours away...

Jaq, Friday, 26 September 2008 04:36 (sixteen years ago)

C'mon up, Jaq! Bring a favorite apple and/or blackberry-centric recipe.

kate78, Friday, 26 September 2008 04:54 (sixteen years ago)

I should find the photo of the blackberry cobbler I made a few years ago for inspiration - the berries were just cowering under a doughy mantle of sugary goodness!

moreso, but not by a whole lot

mookieproof, Friday, 26 September 2008 05:02 (sixteen years ago)

I'd post the crisp, but all that's left is a small lump in some tupperware.
I love the thought of cowering berries!

Mmmmmm - cobbler.

two years pass...

A friend just dropped off a 20 lb box of very ripe yellow and red Bartletts....what to make?

Jaq, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 03:58 (fourteen years ago)

I got some very hard, slightly underripe ones a couple of weeks ago and followed a green papaya salad recipe with pears in place of papaya, good stuff. But if those are very ripe, I dunno.

Headlock Ellis (WmC), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 13:23 (fourteen years ago)

I'm thinking ginger cardamom pear butter.

Jaq, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 13:42 (fourteen years ago)

one month passes...

Pear butter was a massive fail btw - tasted like nasty chemically medicine. Pears too ripe? Too much cardamom/ginger? It's all compost now.

Jaq, Monday, 29 November 2010 23:15 (fourteen years ago)

awww. made latkes last week and sauteed some pears and apples to go with. so yummy.

tehresa, Sunday, 12 December 2010 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

Been a bit obsessed with pear recipes recently...
I'm making a pavlova with mulled pears and dulce du leche right now. Why tf can I never can a meringue thing to be properly stiff? There's cornflour in and everything but it's just a circular slab of meringue rather than a puffy cracked thing of goodness. Think I'll just serve slices of meringue with the rest of the stuff.
