They are trash, all the good stuff is now in yr stock. If you make vegetable only stock, you can feed the remains to yr worm bin. But that's about it.

I wanted an apron from a long time because I'm a messy cook (personally messy that is; I keep my work area v. neat) and I recently found one on clearance at Cost Plus/World Market. It was $7 and came with two matching dish towels! Now I wear it whenever I cook anything that is more complicated than cheese toast.

Apron was essential at my job making donuts, ensuring I'd only be 35% coated in lard/glaze/flour at the end of the shift, as opposed to 120%. I have never used one in any other situation. They're quite practical but it's hard for me not to shake the whole June Cleaver personal connotation they have.

Anything small and silly and used more to denote hostess status than to actually keep you clean or protect your clothing. It just says, "I'm going to be in and out of the kitchen/I am the person you should give that bottle of wine to."

And let's be honest -- I'm always the person you should give that bottle of wine to, so that works out fine.

I would feel confident if I dated her because I am older than (Laurel), Thursday, 29 October 2009 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

I have orignal vintage patterns for about 6 different kinds of perky little aprons, with varieties of pocket design and big gathered fluffy waist ties instead of anything more practical. I figure when you're starching and ironing the apron to make it look its best, you're beyond actually wearing it to cook in.

I would feel confident if I dated her because I am older than (Laurel), Thursday, 29 October 2009 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

Oh totally. I know what's going to happen. I'm going to get these and then be afraid to cook in them for fear of getting them dirty. It's ok though. I'll just wear them around.

Oh man the 1/2 ones are so great. http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=59241§ion_id=5962519 I may have to get one full and one 1/2.

Cooking shoes: my dad is a chef and he used to only wear these special clog/slipper things he got in Germany because if he wore anything else his feet would kill from standing all day/night long.

I would feel confident if I dated her because I am older than (Laurel), Thursday, 29 October 2009 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

how do you wash aprons w/out messing them up?

What's it made of? If cotton or cotton blend, then you could spot treat and machine wash on warm (cold rinse) and hang dry. Warm iron on the wrong side, or just block it really well while it is drying.

Jaq, Thursday, 29 October 2009 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

not sure! it's some kind of blend i think? the texture is rough-ish and a visible weave. i just don't wanna screw up the butterfly.

tehresa, Thursday, 29 October 2009 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

Spot treat, hand wash warm, hang dry would be safest if the butterfly is like a vinyl transfer.

Jaq, Thursday, 29 October 2009 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

it's an appliqué, made of same fabric as apron. i will proceed with caution!
