it's always cookie time, but for reals, it's totally cookie time now.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 3 December 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
what kind of cookies was it time for?

Lingbertt, Friday, 31 December 2004 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Christmas cookies, I believe.

I think this thread had answers at one point.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 1 January 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Another victim of the Void that swallowed ilx during december? Alas.

Lingbertt, Saturday, 1 January 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I made gingerbread cookies with fresh and powdered ginger, they were nice. Also I made oatmeal rasin and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 2 January 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

if you ever want to make these for me, you can.

Lingbertt, Friday, 7 January 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

I made some apple oatmeal cookies a while back, they were nice.

Too many cookies leave an unpleasant afterburn. I suspect baking powder is to blame, but I might be wrong.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 8 January 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

that's part of it, and I also think too much refined flour and sugar. My mom brought me up with lots of whole wheat and honey as ingredients in baking, and that's the way it tastes best to me. The oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are practically health food (they're adapted from an american heart assn cookbook, even)--unbleached flour, lots of oats, brown sugar, and oil rather than butter--less saturated fat that way. They're really almost scone-like.

ten months pass...
Revive!

My mom used to make gingerbread cookies with chocolate chips in. I'm going to try to recreate them this year.

Did this thread have more answers at one point? I don't remember now.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

I think it did, but then the Great Weirdness occurred and they were lost.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

I was sure there were more answers on this thread, including links to recipes for cornish farings (?), now lost forever.

Nevertheless, today I baked a nice batch of standard tollhouse chocolate chip cookies (no nuts) and damn, are they tasty! Mr. Jaq took 1/2 a dozen to his piano teacher, and there are 2 dozen left. Tomorrow, I'll make up sugar cookie dough.

I'm so happy to be home :)

Crackle cookies, num num! except they spread a bit too much in the oven, possibly because I used light brown sugar instead of soft brown sugar? Or maybe they needed longer than four hours in the fridge. They teaste good though!

Oh those look delicious! I'm going to have to run out for more butter before I can do any more baking - thought we had a few pounds in the freezer.

Jaq, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

Was the oven hot enough, V? I think they spread more if they're not blasted with high heat from the start.

Was this the Cornish Fairings recipe?

Madchen, Thursday, 13 December 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

I'll do another batch and check the oven thermometer, ta!

Vicky, Thursday, 13 December 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

This was the cornish farthings thread? But... I made that cookie!

Also, so: I am going to this tardy-Channukah party that my friend Nila, who is Russian/Lithuanian/Jewish, is hosting. And I thought I would make cookies. And then I just thought, I wonder if I could make Nila Wafers! And then I tried to imagine what those would be like.

So, any suggestions for good cookies to make for this party? They don't have to fit the pun. I mean, I have a Jewish dessert cookbook, but actually most of the results from it have been subpar, so I figured I'd ask the hivemind.

Casuistry, Friday, 14 December 2007 09:05 (eighteen years ago)

yeah this reminded me that i need to make cookies for my boss cause i'm too broke to buy him a holiday gift.

any ideas?

roomie's sister sent him some peppermint chocolate chip cookies that were excellent.

tehresa, Friday, 14 December 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

you can't go wrong with a classic gingersnap (says i). they're easy, they keep really well, and you can make them thin and crispy or fat and chewy.

lauren, Friday, 14 December 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

you are genius. tomorrow, in lieu of studying for my finals, i will make several dozen orange gingersnaps!

tehresa, Sunday, 16 December 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)

i just realized i don't have a rolling pin. hmmm... i guess i will be using canned goods!

tehresa, Sunday, 16 December 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

a wine bottle wrapped in wax paper is a good substitute, too. it's a bit easier to use than cans because it's similar in size to an actual rolling pin.

don't forget to bring a few tomorrow night if you've got any leftovers!

lauren, Sunday, 16 December 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

actually i am on crack. i just rolled the dough into logs and am chilling and will slice off individual cookies when it's time to bake.

i'm sure i will have plenty - will try to remember to put some in my bag for you guys tomorrow night!

tehresa, Sunday, 16 December 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

gingerbread = rolled out

ginger snaps = logs

tehresa, Sunday, 16 December 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

i have really got to get a grown up mixer at some point, though. what a mess trying to do this with my hand mixer that has only 1 speed and likes to propel bits of brown sugar and butter all over my kitchen until it gets to a smooth enough consistency to blend!

tehresa, Sunday, 16 December 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

lauren, i am very sad you did not get one of my cookies! i hear from others they were good! though i don't want to brag. there are many, if you want to come by and pick some up one day before thursday...

tehresa, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 08:08 (eighteen years ago)

thank you! i heard that they were delicious.
