So says the BBC. Or, the people who votes at the BBC. What are you missing? I'm missing:

Moreton Bay Bugs, Kangaroo, Guinea pig, paella, barramundi, australian meat pie, durian fruit, haggis and cornish pasty. Not too bad.

I don't understand why "Mexican Food" is number 27 but Paella is still on the list. Or is Paella Spanish?

Yeah, it is.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Apparently one slender reindeer stands between me and death.

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 04:08 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and a meat pie. Whew.

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 04:08 (twenty years ago)

just Barramundi, Giunea pig and reindeer for me. that list did remind me of the wonders of the proper cream tea though - civilised *and* tasty

Moreton Bay Bugs (although I see Squat Lobster is an alternative term, and I'm sure I've had them), Guinea Pig and Durian are all I'm missing.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 11:13 (twenty years ago)

they're the same as dublin bay prawns too

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 11:34 (twenty years ago)

ooh, just realised I've had Barramundi too, tasty, but not as tasty as Dhufish

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 11:34 (twenty years ago)

If they're the same as Dublin Bay Prawns then I can definitely score them off, plus Frances is convinced I've had durian at some point. It looks like Guinea Pig is the most elusive thing on the list then (although I used to work with someone who had eaten it in South America).

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 12:08 (twenty years ago)

you'd know if you'd had durian, the smell, the horror

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 12:11 (twenty years ago)

That's what I thought, that I'd be bound to know. After a bit of discussion, she thinks she might be confusing me with someone else.

Australian food (or, stuff I've eaten in Australia) seems oddly predominant on this list. Here's a Moreton Bay Bug. Smallish lobsterish critter, very tasty. No guinea pig for me, but I've had nutria and capybara which maybe are relatives. No reindeer either.

Durian, aka jackfruit, god what a stink. But also tasty.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 15:42 (twenty years ago)

Jackfruit WISHES it were durian. There's at least one yummy durian thread on ILE. There's at least one guinea pig restaurant here in New York. A local butcher shop I called has had reindeer meat in the past but it doesn't sell well.

Do tell about dhufish (not related to the east and southern coast jewfish)!

Jackfruit WISHES it were durian.

I've been misled! So, durian, guinea pig, and reindeer. None likely before 2005.

I think it is Paul yes, I had it at the restaurant of the Wise winery in Margaret river in Western Australia, amd that's how they spelled it, big fat pearl-like falkes of solid flesh, ok, I'm drooling now.

That restaurant was amazing by the way, out on stilts on a hillside overlooking the winery down to the Southern Ocean

This thread has permanently altered my brane.

I was picking up the final veg for Christmas at the supermarket just now, and the woman in front was doing her (sizeable) Christmas shop. In there was a packet of "guinea pig crunch".

JUST FOR A SECOND I thought it was some kind of coating that made them a bit crispier when you bit into them.
