you want a decent lunch and you got long enough to let some barley cook, why don't you just cook 1/2 a cup of that stuff in 1.5 cups of boiling stock -- reduce to simmer after you add the barley, cover it, let it simmer til the stock's absorbed which can take an hour but probably won't. heat up some black beans & spice them how you like 'em (today I'm using the spice mixture baharat, which I made myself a while back - keeps the same as dry spices & is great; I'm using a simple version similar to the "popular version" on the wiki - and then some salt, pepper, and a little hot sauce), spoon 'em over the barley...this is good chow I tell you
