the MP lobby... is the game world
"Seriously, who'd have thought that something as dry as a game lobby could be exciting? Leave it to Rockstar to prove us all wrong. The Grand Theft Auto developer recently unveiled the oft rumoured but never confirmed, multiplayer portion of its next open-world saga, Red Dead Redemption -- and the lobby might be the game's most exciting element. Why? Because it's practically a Wild West MMORPG.
The lobby is a fully playable version of the entire game world that's populated with both random CPU characters and live gamers -- though the numbers will never approach World of Warcraft levels. In our visit, we created a "posse" with friends and roamed freely about the map, engaging in activities from hunting wild animals to hunting other gamers. There are even ad hoc missions (like besieging a desert ranch filled with bandits) that feel a lot like raids. Whether running from the sheriff or shooting wildlife in the desert, everything we do can net us experience points which are used to customize our appearance and upgrade our horse, weapons, and "title". There are also new multiplayer modes to unlock like the standard 16-player deathmatch and a team-based "capture the bag" (both of which start with a spectacular face-to-face quick-draw duel). But. to be honest, we didn't spend a lot of time with those other modes, because we couldn't pry ourselves away from the lobby!"
Picture 1: Two players on a horse-drawn carriage. "The lobby is like a limit-free version of GTA IV's free roam mode set against a brilliantly atmospheric Wild West backdrop."
Picture 2: Player as Sheriff, points gun at camera; another player waits to shot him in the back. "Once we joined a party-- er, "posse" -- we were in constant communication with teammates."
Picture 3: 3 on 5 Gunfight near the wreckage of an abandoned church in the desert. "Anyone can travel to any point on the map (including building interiors), regardless of the location of lobby visitors."

Why do people keep saying ps3? Is this an exclusive? Do third-party exclusives still exist?

Def not an exclusive. I'm already preordered for the 360.

The good thing about this coming out in late May is I don't know of a single other game that is coming out till September or maybe October that I have any interest in, so if it lives up to the videos, I should have plenty of time to get the most out of it.

If your group is anything like the guys I used to game with, that'll last about 30 seconds into the first dispute re:loot. Then it'll turn into Reservoir Dogs, Wild West style.

I'm getting kinda GTAIV pre-hype flashbacks here. I remember reading one article which said hey, in multiplayer, if you like, you and a buddy can just go for a drive and listen to the stereo and have a chat. Somehow that sounded amazing to me, but did I ever do it in game? Well course not, cos it would've felt ridiculous.
"Gentle hunt" is having a similar effect, it just sounds great to me at the moment. But will I ever do it? Hmm.
― JimD, Friday, 9 April 2010 20:53 (fourteen years ago) link
I thought the same thing, but a ramble around a huge peaceful landscape with discernable goals that impact your MP profile is different than driving around the same streets you're already sick of from the campaign, doing nothing
― antexit, Friday, 9 April 2010 22:40 (fourteen years ago) link
I am pretty sure I will be a lone wolf in the multiplayer lobby, not a roam-in-packs guy.

you can't do this in gta4 iirc. the stereo part that is.

"We have just over 500 characters who all have names, family members and jobs," said Josh Bass, head of art."You can see a man at 7 a.m. in a Mexican market manning the chicken stand and at 6 p.m. he'll go over to the local pub."
"The morally ambiguous cowboy is the perfect protagonist for the style of game we make," observed Houser. "Sometimes you can be the hero, sometimes you can be the bad guy, and sometimes while you're deciding what to do, a bear comes out of nowhere and eats someone."

Boy does this game really fall short of the sequel (so far). Not just the graphics and gameplay, which is to be expected and are totally excused, but the writing and voice acting and story, which so far is kinda dullsville boilerplate. No idea what to do with my money, no incentive to gather plants or pelts, at least not so far. Unlike RDR2, I'm mostly looking forward to it being done so I can play the Undead Nightmare DLC, which people love.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 2 November 2024 18:51 (two weeks ago) link
I doubt you'll love Undead Nightmare if you're that bored by the base game. It's a fun spin on the base content but it's still the same game.
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Saturday, 2 November 2024 20:20 (two weeks ago) link
I think it's more the story and writing than the gameplay that's making it drag for me. I can only assume that cowboys versus zombies is less story intensive.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 2 November 2024 20:30 (two weeks ago) link
Rdr2 is a massive achievement. Very few can stand up to it in comparison
― calstars, Saturday, 2 November 2024 20:39 (two weeks ago) link
I kind of assumed that much going into this, but I could have sworn I've seen discussions online about which game is better. Like, this first one is perfectly fine, but I don't see how anybody can suggest there is any real competition.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 2 November 2024 20:40 (two weeks ago) link
Guess most people would have played that first though and at the time it was a fantastic game. But yeah RDR2 totally eclipses it
― groovypanda, Tuesday, 5 November 2024 15:55 (two weeks ago) link
So - I can skip the first one, then? I was happy watching Andor without seeing Rogue One.

Saw a tweet from a Telegraph football journalist describing 2 as "Be Here Now the Video Game" and could never quite look at it the same
― hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Tuesday, 5 November 2024 17:04 (two weeks ago) link
OK, just finished the RDR1 base game, and while it is totally competent, doubly so for being so old, yeah, there is not a single aspect that is not improved by the sequel/prequel, imo. That means graphics, music, writing, voice acting, plot, side quests, mechanics, everything. More surprising to me was how RDR2 echoed this game's epilogue, except handled it better than the first game, too. Here, when I got to the epilogue I found it almost perverse how it forced me to do all the boring stuff I'd avoided for most of the game: herding, breaking horses, hunting, following the dog around. And all for a payoff nowhere near as affecting as (iirc) even the death of my horse in RDR2. But hey, it's all good, generally what I expected, which is to say, fine. Looking forward to the zombie DLC.
