Who wants to place money on when the first MAJOR bug hits
and will the bug be one of the npc's malfunctioning and stalking the player FOREVER through the game?

The thing about potential bugs and having 500 NPCs with their own personalities/routines reminds me of the Oblivion guys saying they actually had to scale back and limit the AI because of the problems it caused; they had a guy in a village work in a field at certain times of the day but somebody else in the village used his hoe or some shit and he attacked him for stealing it and the village ended up rioting in a way that broke the game

Despite the temptation to chop and change between horses (different breeds offer different levels of obedience, speed or stamina), there are benefits in sticking to a favourite, as in time you build loyalty which results in stamina bonuses, allowing you to run at full pelt for longer before tiring the horse. As you begin to clock up the miles together across, hill, canyon and stream, you form a bond - and this relationship between protagonist and transport, the kind alluded to in the great Westerns, is undoubtedly one of Red Dead Redemption's greatest successes.
cool!

Via Mitch Krpata, here's a collection of quotes from that NY Times guy:
"In the more than 1,100 articles I have written for this newspaper since 1996, I have never before called anything a tour de force. Yet there is no more succinct and appropriate way to describe Red Dead Redemption."
"Nier does many different things at such a high level of sophistication and accessibility that I cannot think of another single game of recent years that more faithfully represents the sheer intellectual breadth of modern video games."
"I have probably spent 10,000 hours playing various sorts of electronic games. But no single-player experience has made me as genuinely nervous, unsettled, surprised, emotionally riven and altogether involved as Heavy Rain... No other game in recent memory has forced me to reach for a blanket at 11 a.m. because I am literally shivering in nervous tension."
"Even more important to a great game of this sort is that it provide players with a world they actually care about saving (in this case defeating the demon menace by rallying mages, elves, dwarves and men to the cause). That means setting, plot and personalities, and it is in these elements that Dragon Age is perhaps the best electronic game yet made."
"No game this year will be more controversial and more easily misrepresented than Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. That is because it revolves around the most provocative, forcefully uncomfortable and emotionally disturbing scene yet built into interactive entertainment."
"Uncharted 2 is perhaps the best-looking game on any system, and no game yet has provided a more genuinely cinematic entertainment experience."
"No game so far this year delivers a deeper, more fully realized aesthetic experience than Brütal Legend."
"By reinterpreting an essential symbol of one generation in the medium and technology of another, The Beatles: Rock Band provides a transformative entertainment experience. In that sense it may be the most important video game yet made."
"Even as I was losing game after game to the likes of the Pirates and the Royals, it was obvious that MLB 10 is perhaps the most finely calibrated, lusciously animated, fanatically detailed team sports game yet made."
"Lara Croft should go run and hide in a closet because Bayonetta, the character, is both more alluring and more powerful than any female game lead I can recall. Likewise, Bayonetta, the game, is more alluring and more powerful than any big-budget game to come out of Japan in recent years."
"Batman: Arkham Asylum may not provide the definitive superhero experience, but it is the finest, most intelligent comic-book game yet and one of the best video games of the year."
"Fight Night Round 4 is, for now, the greatest of all time. There has never been a more visceral, precise and natural electronic simulation of hand-to-hand combat."
"Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is one of the most subversive, provocative video games of recent years. It may also be one of the most important, not because of its content but because of how it is delivered."
"As an essential, visceral science-fiction combat fantasy, Killzone 2 is one of the most enjoyable console shooters yet."

you probably have to be hyperbolic to get video games covered in the NYT, I'm guessing. If you can't justify it as "the best ever" or "important" in some way, they're not going to cover it.

this is so the kind of thing that makes u say cool when u read it in a review but then either has no bearing on the game or is just kind of annoying (like the "hanging out with pals" part of GTA4)
although i've been waiting for a game to really realize the relationship between protagonist and transport, that has been alluded to in so many great westerns
video game writing is a disgrace imo
