i think i'm gonna get this for ps3 today unless somebody convinces me 360 is a better choice
― forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 15:49 (fourteen years ago) link
360 has better framerate and crisper graphics (for some reason, Rockstar locked the PS3 at 640p, not the 720p of the 360), PS3 has some free extra outfits like a tophat, and my friends are really surprised by the fun of the online game (they're on the 360, BTW).

I wish I were playing this right now. They claimed they shipped out my Xbox on Monday, but UPS hasn't shown any pick-up activity yet (only billing information received). Maybe I'll luck out and get it by the weekend.

trying to exert impulse control on this one but man i am having a hard time doing so, esp since i feel like price drops on this are going to be like a million years from now, judging by the effusive praise its getting.

thought it might come in the mail today, it didn't. makes me feel like when I was 11 and lived overseas and ordered this:

this is dope imho but my one moan so far is that the game does a pretty good job of drawing me into the setting and the characters, and then someone wants me to race horses or do a timed challenge shooting birds, and suddenly i can see straight thru the old west lacquer to GTA underneath and it spoils the wahmbience. i kinda wish they had played it straighter.
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 22:53 (fourteen years ago) link
I would think random dudes challenging you on rep to impromptu shooting or riding contests was probably more common in the old west than it was in 2004 new york city or whatever

Since I couldn't play this, I watched The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance instead. So good.

― Don Homer, I have baked a special donut just-a for you (kingfish), Thursday, 20 May 2010 00:48 (fourteen years ago) link
okay, I'm gonna get this on 360and i'm gonna make y'all a custom country soundtrack now too.
― forksclovetofu, Thursday, 20 May 2010 02:59 (fourteen years ago) link
this is rad. sound design is really good as far as i can tell. i just experienced my first rainstorm and the wind, rain, and thunder rolling through the hills was spot on. guns sound like the should. not too light, not too meaty. they've got a little echo to them that sounds (i imagine) realistic. horses look beautiful and sound like horses. horse footsteps on wooden floors are good and heavy sounding. nice touch. i was expecting a straight morricone pastiche of a soundtrack but it's a little more varied and subtle for the most part.
it's the same basic gameplay as any of the GTA games, but it still manages to feel significantly different tbh. thus far.

Btw, sorta off-topic, but if any of you are interested in Westerns, and particular The Searchers and The Man Who Shot..., Robert Pippin had a piece in Critical Inquiry recently called "What is a Western? Politics and Self-Knowledge in John Ford's The Searchers" that is really amazing and an incredible read. I've got a copy if anyone wants (get in touch and I'll send it along). It's about how these films mythologize the civilizing of America by demonstrating how society is formed on top of violent encounters, and how that violence is never fully sublimated. Tho I haven't gotten to RDR yet, it's clearly a trope that's embraced by the game -- a man who has formed a family but is called forth by his violent history.

He's got this coming out this week: http://www.amazon.com/Hollywood-Westerns-American-Myth-Importance/dp/0300145772
Kinda serendipitous to have RDR + this book in the same month, at least for me.
