(I gave up entirely on FF9 because at some point I skimmed a walkthrough to solve some particular problem, and discovered I'd missed dozens of side quests, none of which could now be attempted because of event x, y or z.)

It's fine up to a point, but when the quests are poorly-telegraphed it just means the first play is harder and less rich than it could be. Just seems punitive.
