idk i expect more from jacobin i guess
― Mordy, Thursday, 18 September 2014 22:32 (eleven years ago)
but tbf consumerism is pretty much ubiquitous on our culture so maybe its unfair to pick on teh poor gamers, in the preceding piece he does spell out how everyone is a geek now https://www.jacobinmag.com/2013/08/on-geek-culture
― lag∞n, Thursday, 18 September 2014 22:33 (eleven years ago)
this is good:
There are a few small issues with this analysis. One is the notion that the slights imagined by gamers are just that: imaginary. But they aren’t, and gamers must be taken at face value when they claim to feel threatened. Gamer culture is under threat, though the notion that it’s dead or dying is both overstated and premature.
When your identity has been manufactured by corporations urging you to consume certain things in prescribed ways, then any change, no matter how small, is an existential threat. When women challenge decades of almost exclusively male fantasies of sex and power, this alters the content the gamer consumes. And when that content is altered, gamer identity itself under threat. The vitriol isn’t contrived or artificially manufactured. It has a source.

Neoliberalism has made geeks of us all: jocks, nerds, and dweebs alike.
― Nhex, Friday, 19 September 2014 02:26 (eleven years ago)
how to write for Jacobin:
1. Identify a thing that's definitely bad.2. Blame neoliberalism for that thing.3. Something something Adorno?

um neoliberalism is bad hello
― lag∞n, Friday, 19 September 2014 13:50 (eleven years ago)
it's not that there aren't interesting things to still say about neoliberalism, but that well is pretty dry in 2014.
― Mordy, Friday, 19 September 2014 13:54 (eleven years ago)
naw i agree that those on the left tend to just call everything and everyone they dont like neoliberalism
― lag∞n, Friday, 19 September 2014 13:57 (eleven years ago)
but i mean its just one sentence
― lag∞n, Friday, 19 September 2014 13:58 (eleven years ago)
i think someone very bright could write a very interesting piece about the history of gaming as it intertwines w/ (as well as subverts) neoliberalism + consumerism. i envision something like Attali's Noise but for games instead of music.

The correct title of this article is #GamerGate. The substitution or omission of the # is because of technical restrictions.

In Japan, the number of female gamers is rapidly increasing. And as a result there are more and more games being made specifically for the female gamer market. Some have a very exaggerated 'cuteness' than seems to be deliberately 'non-sexual'. Others have suggestive sexual content but with the gender roles reversed. There are also many games featuring homosexual male characters but they are clearly aimed at female gamers.
― Tokyo Crow, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:51 (eleven years ago)
That almost reads like a direct reflection of how manga markets have been for over a decade.
― tsrobodo, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 18:57 (eleven years ago)
Yeah, that's true. There's a very big overlap between the manga/anime audience and the video game audience.
Multimedia franchises - play the game, read the comic, watch the anime, buy the soundtrack, buy the figures/merchandise, play the pachinko machine, read the light novel, watch the movie etc.
― Tokyo Crow, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 19:17 (eleven years ago)

That's really depressing. The comments are really depressing. The only hope I can draw from this is that the men behind it are so noxious and emotionally stunted they will never get to multiply.

The subject of this article has actually been going out of her way to berate, provoke and insult gamers for years. Calling them things like nerds, losers etc and how they "take their hobby way too seriously".-- Joe Random Asshole Commenter
I can't say I had particularly noticed this vibe in Leigh Alexander's articles "for years" but either way it's funny how they don't mind it when Milo Yiannopoulos does it:
Personally, I don't understand grown men wasting their lives playing computer games. It seems a bit sad to me. . . . Is it me, or do these weirdos need therapy and their internet connections taken away by mum?
Anyway it sucks that this has happened, very disappointing
(plus, Gamasutra is for game design/developers and 99% of the gamergate brigade strike me as... not having spent the time thinking about games on the level required to/inspired by actually trying to make one, at whatever point on the continuum from dabbling to professionalism. so screw those guys for getting out their pretending-to-be-target-audience crayons. but y'know that's a totally unjustified kneejerk assumption and could be entirely wrong.)
