Twitter death threats have consequences! http://www.polygon.com/2014/10/20/7024585/gabe-newell-death-threat-paranautical-activity-steam-valve (Not actually GG related)
― Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 00:49 (eleven years ago)
"This being a project I spent years of my life on, I was very frustrated by this mistake [Valve] made, so I tweeted a series of tweets calling them incompetent that eventually ended in me saying 'I swear I'm gonna fucking kill gabe' or something," Maulbeck said in an email to Polygon. "A statement I obviously didn't mean, but nonetheless was totally unacceptable and driven entirely by the heat of frustration I was feeling at the time."
Maulbeck let loose a series of vitriolic tweets, calling Valve "incompetent" and expressing anger at Steam's "awful fucking monopoly." Maulbeck then allegedly said in a since-deleted tweet, "I am going to kill gabe newell [sic]. He is going to die."

Speaking of white supremacists/Lost Causes, the Calavier/Roundhead charge got tossed around a bunch during the American Civil War by Confederate politicos, who tried to connect their war as the continuation as the fight against Norman invaders.

Paranautical Activity is available through other digital distribution means, like Desura and the Humble Store, but Maulbeck lamented that the game sold 12 copies on non-Steam platforms today.

their absolute inability to read Sam Biddle's bullying comments as anything other than bullying - either they lack any sense of normal human interaction, or they're taking this as a threat in very very bad faith
― Terrific ribbon, Moe (stevie), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 12:59 (eleven years ago)
I think in the big picture joking about bullying on twitter, especially to these rubes who have no sense of context or irony, was a bad move, in retrospect
but holy shit are these people happy to take anything that they can conform to their narrative and hammer on it
― ⌘-B (mh), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 13:17 (eleven years ago)
xp
it was an unfortunate tweet tho' - obvious joke that hit a nerve (ie past or present experience) with a chunk of the sincere useful-idiot crowd & the cynics are exploiting it – they seem to be obsessively reframing a lot of this as bullying by SJWs now.
― woof, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 13:18 (eleven years ago)
they were shooting at the boss and nothing was happening then the boss opened his biddle-eye and the eye pulsed red so they shot him in the biddle-eye and now mercedes benzes are crashing into gawker
― woof, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 13:22 (eleven years ago)
Can I tell Mercedes that I will never buy their cars if they withdraw advertising from Gawker? Does the bullying work in that direction too?
― Terrific ribbon, Moe (stevie), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 13:51 (eleven years ago)
Is the Mercedes thing even real?
― how's life, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 13:56 (eleven years ago)
Dear Mercedes, I have been a big fan of your cars for many years and have bought seven to twelve of them for my video games, however I never will gain, this is your last warning
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 13:57 (eleven years ago)
I really can't tell - the gg merc and bmw claims are noisy, but Gawker's denials are pretty clear.
― woof, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 14:08 (eleven years ago)
Mercedes, stop supporting bullying or we will release your address and home phone number online

The website of a Danish newspaper published an article on GamerGate, and goddammit, there's a guy spouting all the usual gamer bullshit. "#NotYourShield" The threats against Sarkeesian used SJW language, etc. I really hoped we didn't have guys like that.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 14:14 (eleven years ago)
In the comments. He is talking shit in the comments on the article.
total tl;dr preaching-to-choir post here but
their absolute inability to read Sam Biddle's bullying comments as anything other than bullying plus their inability to see their new meathead idol's glee for punching people (embarrassing/blackmailing people into being punched by him, no less), and putting people down AS bullying; the total free pass of GamerGate is well aware Nero hated us. Know what we like about him tho'? He actually did journalism. (reply to the Binder tweet D-40 linked to) while gnashing teeth over every perceived insult from any woman, games journalist, developer, all of whom are clearly SJW and not real gamer enough...
(srsly who wakes up one morning and goes "you know, I am not into games and totally don't even play them but I'm going to start thinking about them in a lot of depth, possibly even for a living" -- apparently everyone who ever thought the second half of that sentence, according to GamerGate)
...I have spent altogether too long reading my way round this rabbithole over the past week month (ugh) and I should probably stop. Mostly because it's a poor use of time which could be more constructively spent doing pretty much anything, including playing video games; but also because minds like that will not be changed, and finally I don't need to feed any pity or empathy for the imagined "moderates" or "useful idiots" any more, because if you can't see any problem with those mental contortions I. Don't. Even. etc
― club mate martyr (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 14:15 (eleven years ago)
"embarrassing/blackmailing people into being punched by him" ok this is silly. making a big fucking song and dance about... oh who the fuck even cares. equal parts playground bully and every nasty manipulative stereotype implied by GG's "don't stick your dick in crazy" chorus and they don't even care because libertarian+lulz.
right, time to ignore it and get more coffee.

i've been looking at the sam b bullying tweet uproar (along with the gamer-death articles uproar and that whole anil dash saga) as mostly a willful misunderstanding, same way fox news likes to dig for anything that could be perceived as a gaffe and then spend weeks (or years #BENGHAZIIIIII) screaming about it w/tears in their eyes on camera

Even more fascinating is how these insecurities have allowed some gamers to consider themselves a downtrodden minority, despite their continued dominance of every meaningful sector of the games industry, from development to publishing to criticism. That demonstrates a strange and seemingly contradictory “overdog” phenomenon: The most powerful members of a culture often perceive an increase in social equality as a form of persecution. (To wit: the significant number of white Americans who say they face more racism than black people, or the persecution complex of some conservative Christians who believe that increasing cultural acceptance of gays and reproductive rights has transformed them into an oppressed minority—despite the fact that more than 80 percent of Americans identity as Christians.)Ultimately, the anti-feminist movement in games has a great deal in common with the religious right; in both instances, their fixations on “ethics” and “values” come down not to a desire for a pluralist culture with a wide array of perspectives and values, but one where anything less than the absolute dominance of their own perspectives and values is perceived as “oppression."

totally, this is exactly it. and there's something i find so defeating about this wingnut disingenuity. it's like the height of 'if you can have your own opinions i can have my own facts' bullshit, and its impossible to engage and debate and communicate with people who will just choose which facts to ignore and believe (cf that awful bullying douchenozzle's previous awful fat shaming and suicide-baiting posts, ignored by the idiots who rail at sam biddle for 'bullying', or that guy on twitter ignoring milo's anti-gaming posts now he's pro #GG, and saying 'that was in the past but now he's doing his job which is journalism'). maybe that's how they get to maintain these entirely indefensible and self-serving and nonsensical 'moral' positions.
