did anyone ever come up with that list of ethical concerns for mom? I'd like a good run down
― ⌘-B (mh), Tuesday, 28 October 2014 21:58 (eleven years ago)
let's see, an indie developer has her personal life blown up on the internet, a feminist youtuber releases her work to a chorus of threats, niche websites run a few articles about how gaming culture has problems (the same problems as larger tech culture or just culture in general) and the way to end this mess is... a new editorial regime at gawker? somehow i doubt it.
― caucasity and the sundance kid (goole), Tuesday, 28 October 2014 22:02 (eleven years ago)
that is some heavy duty concern trolling re Gawker
― anonanon, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 22:04 (eleven years ago)
You may be understandably hesitant to make such an offer to people who have been associated with the Gamergate movement. But if South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission can do it, I don’t think I’m asking so much. The particular flashpoint of Gamergate will recur in different forms, and you want as many people on the side of decency as possible.
the hell are you even on about man
who is going to hold these hearings. who is going to enforce this agreement. what authority are you appealing to. what.

auerbach: Gawker, if you want to claim any moral authority on Gamergate, I would first issue a public apology to all you have wronged—from Asians to Heather Morris to Amanda Bynes—issue new clear guidelines to guard against any backsliding, and change the company name to mark a clean break with the toxic Gawker brand. Failing that, Gawker publisher Nick Denton should at least turn the site over to a journalist with a pristine ethical track record.
"toxic gawker brand" links to this article, the site of which has run a lot of pro-gg stuff: http://adland.tv/adnews/gawker-toxic-brands-who-partner-them/1291467968
the headline is "Gawker is toxic to brands who partner with them". the article itself is a pro-gg gloss on an AdAge article.
what's the headline of the AdAge article? "How Brands Should React to Gamergate: Don't"

― Clay, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 03:31 (eleven years ago)
that thing where a writer "sees all sides" of an issue only there aren't "sides" at all
― my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 03:33 (eleven years ago)
Geeks, it seems, are at the bottom of God’s great chain. While “freaks” such as James Franco and Seth Rogen from cult TV show Freaks and Geeks have gone far, the geeks have not (although Martin Starr has carved out a career as a postmodern Eddie Deezen).
― linda cardellini (zachlyon), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 03:40 (eleven years ago)
To be a real geek is largely to be invisible. We may hear about the “hackers” behind the Fappening or DDoS attacks on game servers, but these are trivial attacks next to what security wonks like Bruce Schneier discover every week, from the infamous “goto fail” bug to byzantine weaknesses in RSA Security. Most of these hackers aren’t out for fame or damage or money, but for the thrill of the chase itself—which is what it really means to be a geek.
