Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

"Wow, sexist and racist. Two in one. You have a gift."

Nhex, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 16:24 (eleven years ago)

these gamergaters remind me of a cargo cult, like they think if they put on dad's suit and mouth the big serious words they think grownups use, they will all be magically deemed serious adults and their serious concerns about ethics in game journalism will assume gravitas, but like the islanders who built an airplane out of palm fronds or w/e they still have no insight at all how any of it actually works

I guess in that way it's just continuing the m.o. of the MRA/fedora sphere, with its obsession with divining the right shibboleths to utter and special garb to wear and mystic rites to enact to access social cachet rather than learning how to be a person in the world

anonanon, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 16:29 (eleven years ago)

tangentially related, but I'm interested in seeing Nightcrawler which seems to touch upon this sort of internet-educated recluse but applying it to the world tabloid journalism, or something

lag∞n, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 17:59 (eleven years ago)

thing is that cargo cults have a rational and explicable basis for their beliefs

Barry Gordy (Neil S), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 18:19 (eleven years ago)

yeah youre right that this is an insult to cargo cults and i appologize

lag∞n, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 18:20 (eleven years ago)

I think we've answered jjj's initial question pretty thoroughly by this point:

Because of ethics in gaming journalism!

Senior analyst Stephanie Llamas wrote in a follow-up blog post that the growing popularity of "casual platforms" has helped reinforce the false assumption that women are primarily casual gamers. But the reality, says Llamas, is that half of female PC gamers in the US consider themselves either "mid-core or hardcore gamers."

goes to the self-identifying as 'gamers' convo we had all the way upthread

Mordy, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 19:49 (eleven years ago)

The comments are a treat. On so-called "casual gamers" being called "gamers":

It does however devalue the term and there are people who identify with it. Would you like your neighbour identifying as your wife's second husband just because they shook hands? Would an archaeologist like it if people started calling them dogs because they both dig out bones?

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 19:49 (eleven years ago)

they're so good at not thinking through the subtexts of analogies

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 19:51 (eleven years ago)

there's also the guy who says women outnumber men in social gaming spaces 1:1.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 29 October 2014 19:54 (eleven years ago)

it's like watching a slow motion collapse as these dudes continue to be confronted with evidence that challenges their narrative of primacy in a hobby they've been consistently out of touch with for years now. the gg crew represents, apparently, an ever smaller demo in an evolving and diversifying landscape. it is truly no wonder they've attracted attention from the social conservative wings, since ideologically they share nearly identical ideological anxieties

this things i believe (art), Wednesday, 29 October 2014 20:13 (eleven years ago)

second ideology mention superfluous; much shame on my house
