Similarly the FTC communication that they're getting excited about now is something that they're excited about because it's a way to piss off Gawker - but the FTC is looking at it in particular because Gamasutra was enquiring about YouTube advertorials six months ago.
Also of course lol at the polite tone of "You haven't done the thing we wanted, do you have another email address we could use?"

the gamergate book is evolving:
We never got along perfectly well with the wider world, but we always worked to improve it. We worked to make it lulzier, to bend reality to our own purposes, to end that that was our foe in this great war. This great war across not only the Internet, but across the outer world. Our armies waged war against Scientology and their proto-SJW brainwashing. Hacker artillery shelled the sites of oppressive (real oppression, not SJ “oppression”) middle eastern governments in support of the ordinary men protesting the governments. When a corporate security firm came to crush us, we besieged them and revealed their darkest secrets to the world. When we heard those running Habbo Hotel were oppressing their users (the truly oppressed), we invaded the hotel and seized the pool.

The internet is so fucking stupid
In early 2008, a Texan named Mary Alice Altorfer came across a “Pool’s Closed” sign in her neighborhood and called the local news station with a claim that it was promoting racial discrimination. Altorfer’s encounter with an internet meme in real life was soon turned into a news story and after the broadcast, a video clip of the report was uploaded onto YouTube. In the following days, members of Anonymous allegedly launched a harassment campaign against the woman.

It's a "real life 'swastiget'", apparently? I have no idea.
The Habbo Hotel raids by 4chan’s /b/ became so popular that they eventulally gained some offline recognition as well. In Finland, people rallied together outside Sulake’s headquarters (the parent company of Habbo Hotel) in afro wigs and suits, forming a real life “swastiget.” In the center was someone cosplaying the character Suiseiseki from the anime Rozen Maiden.

Didn't mean for this to sound harsh, just that the link sums up what would be a very unwieldy explanation
― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 25 November 2014 21:37 (eleven years ago)
one minute youre lightly trolling some online anime hangout the next youre forming a human swastika while cosplaying blackness, life comes at you fast
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 22:38 (eleven years ago)
That it started from rumours of racial profiling and ended in that... I don't know, the psychology here is too deep for me.
― jmm, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 22:57 (eleven years ago)
As time went on, people would go on to cosplay the “Pool’s Closed” avatars at anime and internet culture conventions

short version: people acting like mini-Limbaughs, crowing about gamergate and whatever else, are accepting donations via patreon and monetizing their ranting, making others want to do the same.
because it's a crazy small world, one of the founders of Patreon is that dude from ILM favorite, Pomplamoose
