Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

lol at that roosh motherfucker getting completely shut down by an entire city

let's not get too excited w/ the ouches (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 11 August 2015 21:53 (nine years ago) link

In addition to a speech and Q&A period, Roosh promises time for attendees to “have an intimate one-on-one moment with myself where we can take selfies together.”

huh

This is slightly off-topic I guess

http://money.cnn.com/2015/08/11/technology/mens-rights-activist-chic-ceo/index.html

Rava, who also serves as secretary to men's rights organization National Coalition for Men, declined to talk to CNN Money by phone. ("I do not trust you will quote me correctly or in the proper context given your leftwing, pro-female, anti-male bias," he wrote in an email.

Rava said this about CNN Money! Pretty good.

Fuckin' Roosh was on the front page of the National Post, below the fold, earlier this week

http://www.polygon.com/2015/8/13/9149481/violent-video-games-aggression-research-review-report-apa-resolution

What do you think?

I think saying there is a link between violent video games and aggression is kind of duh. Any violent media will attract people that enjoy violence. It is a very easy conclusion to reach.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 14 August 2015 19:46 (nine years ago) link

I think the blame for a lot of racist/sexist/violence tropes and stuff in video games lies on US pop culture, specifically TV and Hollywood movies. The 80s had a weird experimental phase in the beginning which completely collapsed and was saved mostly by games that wished they were James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. But this generation of games was arguably dominated by Japanese developers who took inspiration from US culture. By the time America began to make a serious step back into video games, it was in a post-9/11 world. The games that the US put out were often historical war/assassination simulators and featured violent elements like torture and mass murder at the same time the gov't was signing off on those things irl.

when the parody of the thing is indistinguishable from the thing itself mostly cause you can't overdo the overdone

that polygon report was pretty even-keeled - i rarely see something so sober said as violence behavior could be an accumulation of various risk factors in these kinds of stories

yeah, the parody leads to the institutionalized norm was part of my point (though i coulda phrased that better)

i gather anita sarkeesian put out another video today?

and this 'movement' is still going on! amazing to think of really. here's a decent writeup of the current situation, which is about the same as it's always been. their meetups have received bomb threats on at least two occasions i've heard of, which is really fucked up.

your terrible ideas (gamer edition):

A bizzaro Anita Sarkeesian video that with the help of modded game footage shows a world where you play a female in games like gtav and god of war, and all the men are hookers, slaves and other sex objects. Lots of in game footage of men looking like models and being treated like dirt. Some wear chaps, some wear speedos, some nudity here and there... yada yada yada

I occasionally check in with Feminist Frequency on YouTube. They're good videos and informative. Pretty much immediately afterward, my YouTube recommendations fill up with Sargon of Akkad.

It's been a month on the Steam forums and good god I'm taken aback by the sheer percentage gamers who post in forums that are idiot jerks. Never been a member of a gaming-centric forum before and yeeeesh it is ugly out there.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 17:46 (nine years ago) link

it's such a pain that these kind of places are often the only resources available for info regarding a game you are playing or are interested in. were it any other way, they could be easily avoided

Unless you count ISIS, it’s hard to think of a recent movement with a worse image than GamerGate.

Responses to the “Zoe post” certainly included some vile misogynist comments, particularly on 4chan, a board with anonymous posting and a notoriously anything-goes atmosphere. Yet mostly, the hostility to Ms. Quinn was not based on gender but on the perception that she was a darling of the elites showered with undeserved praise.

"yet mostly" ah yes

Feminist gaming critic Katherine Cross sees Vivian as the gamers’ ideal woman, not only “apolitical” but with no mind of her own and pliable to male fantasy. Yet, as it happens, one of Twitter’s most active and outspoken “gaters” is a young woman who dresses as Vivian James for GamerGate events and goes by “Cult of Vivian” (real first name, Nicole).

wow pathetic

Except for the bigots and far-right loons who hang out on the movement’s fringes, what they oppose is not equal treatment for women, gays, transgender people, or minorities, but the politicization and policing of culture.

that's a good one
