Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

most of those girls are making bank off the high minimum donations and a deliberate part of the appeal is being able to send (mostly) unfiltered troll messages that will be read on stream. you can probably find some of helena lux's streams archived for a particularly good e.g. of the phenomenon. there's a subset of twitch where some camgirls moved over to twitch because its more lucrative and less terrible than doing cams & so their chats are particularly... problematic. i mean the idea that there are so many people willing to pay $5 to spam the donation script with nonsense or boring insults or w/e is symptomatic of the sickness at the heart of the western male pysche but its basically a weird s&m stream. more misogynistic are all the manbabies that complain incessantly about 'female streamers' and 'attention whores' and are always trying to get these girls banned from twitch.

anti-harassment people propose panel about design, their proposal is mobbed on line, but succeeds
gg people holler at sxsw to give them a panel too, which it does (i think w/o the same proposal process!)
after a shitload of hate mail (from everyone, afaict) sxsw cancels *both* panels
media aghast, vox and buzzfeed threaten boycott at cancellations
sxsw cooks up replacement panel -- throwing 'both sides' into the same room for a whole day
