Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

Scrolling through long ilx threads can be hell to be honest, but I do like seeing the history of posts on smaller ones

abcfsk, Monday, 23 October 2017 19:52 (seven years ago)

ILX is really the perfected internet, there was nowhere to go but down

I just didn't know how FAR down

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 23 October 2017 20:07 (seven years ago)

game forums/blogs i used to read: gaming world (rip), selectbutton.net, the tigsource forums, freeindiegam.es. A few other smaller blogs like zero feedback. Now only salt world. and freem.jp and some russian dev forum. but games are dead so

But I read this news and I'm like, what the hell is neogaf?

bamcquern, Monday, 23 October 2017 21:07 (seven years ago)

Perhaps, but I'd wish instead we could give people a second chance? Or at least accept that when people are teenagers/YA's they say dumb stuff (which 100% of them) which cannot be carried after the person forever. Which is *not* to dismiss his remarks, at all, but the greediness in the search to nail people doesn't sit well with me either.

Oops, wrong thread (or is it?)

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 23 October 2017 21:13 (seven years ago)

The "new neogaf" or "neo neogaf" if you will, Resetera, is live, although registration is initially done in waves https://www.resetera.com/

Some former neogaf people and some others are running it, mostly neogaf users flocking over there right now. Should be the place to migrate to.

Malka (the guy implicated) has opened up neogaf again as a games-only forum, doubling down on his assholery and even checking people's personal messages to censor links to the new place. lol. That place is dead to any sensible user.

abcfsk, Thursday, 26 October 2017 09:25 (seven years ago)

"doubling down on assholery" feels like the big trend for 2017

I guess it's in the nature of assholes to do this, and now they have a detourned language of victimhood to help them on their way

Kotaku's old Japan correspondent Brian Ashcraft was one of the most transparent creepy pervs I have ever read.

"Taste's very strange!" (stevie), Monday, 20 November 2017 23:03 (seven years ago)

Literally every other story he wrote could fit under the heading "Things Brian came across while looking for things to masturbate to"

general rule of thumb is if you ever write the phrase "things get... sexy" you should have your computer taken away from you

The survey also pointed to male gamers as a contributing factor. 25% of men surveyed agreed with the statement, "I would spend more time playing mobile games if I knew I was playing with or against players of my own gender," compared to just 10% of women. And while that 10% figure for women was roughly unchanged regardless of how much they played, among the most dedicated male mobile gamers (those who play 10 hours or more a week), 47% preferred to play exclusively with other men. Those preferences naturally produce an exclusionary atmosphere that makes women feel less welcome in the community, they said.

El Tomboto, Sunday, 10 December 2017 17:31 (seven years ago)

that is just... so fkn weird. and so fkn easy to believe. but still so fkn weird.

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Monday, 11 December 2017 03:00 (seven years ago)

surprised the number for women is so low, given what playing games w boys is like

difficult listening hour, Monday, 11 December 2017 03:20 (seven years ago)

I'm not that surprised actually. The way women compete with each other can be pretty brutal!

Nhex, Monday, 11 December 2017 04:30 (seven years ago)

that... was not my takeaway

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Monday, 11 December 2017 04:49 (seven years ago)

I think Nhex may have chosen one of the more awkward possible ways to convey the sentiment that “it is not surprising that women are not intimidated by competing or playing with men, considering how competitive women can be with each other”

El Tomboto, Monday, 11 December 2017 05:16 (seven years ago)

This is also weird because isnt one of the sexist-git arguments about how many women gamers there are, is "no they just play mobile games, and those dont count!".

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 11 December 2017 05:23 (seven years ago)

One quibble with that finding: I'm not sure that this statement is well-phrased:

"I would spend more time playing mobile games if I knew I was playing with or against players of my own gender"

It's ambiguous between "only players of my own gender" and "at least some players of my own gender". It's not clear that the 25%/47% are all saying that they would prefer to play exclusively with men.

jmm, Monday, 11 December 2017 05:47 (seven years ago)

thanks tomboto - i was sorta trying to get at that, you said it better

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Monday, 11 December 2017 06:50 (seven years ago)

i didn't mean that they're intimidatingly competitive i meant that they hate women
