also his use of repetition is weirdly appealing to me

If anyone wants to read the FFVI essay he mentions in the ULTRA-VIOLENCE section, it's here: http://www.actionbutton.net/?p=3272

american primitive stylophone (zchyrs), Thursday, 17 September 2020 17:13 (four years ago) link

yes i do, thank you! i didn't realize he was publishing new action button (written) reviews, last year

Karl Malone, Thursday, 17 September 2020 17:15 (four years ago) link

i really enjoyed that essay. there's a reveal about halfway through that made me actually say holy shit

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 17 September 2020 17:28 (four years ago) link

i'd read tim's auto-fictional epic

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 17 September 2020 17:28 (four years ago) link

oh yeah i think that FF6 essay was partially incorporated into his 1994 review video

ciderpress, Thursday, 17 September 2020 17:31 (four years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Ok I've watched three hours of the Doom thing, even though it blows up Firefox's memory usage and makes everything crash. I can't always make it through his super long videos but this is good.

(might have to switch back to Chrome even though I was trying to lesson my Google surveillance)

The FFVI essay is good too, as a poignant midwest portrait of pre-internet childhood being obsessed with Final Fantasy games (relatable, except for me it was the original FF). Did he really go to high school with Subway Jared?!

If he did, he went to college near him as well

bogo jumbo boba (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 2 October 2020 17:08 (four years ago) link

I am very curious to see how he will spin insight, LOLs, and poignancy from Pac-Man, a game that to my mind, "speaks for itself" even more than Doom. Like what on Earth is there to say about Pac-Man?

american primitive stylophone (zchyrs), Friday, 2 October 2020 18:44 (four years ago) link

I struggled with the doom vid. doom's greatness is somewhat lost in watching gameplay video.

bogo jumbo boba (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 2 October 2020 19:16 (four years ago) link

i was ignorant of tim rogers before clicking on this thread a couple of weeks ago, i played doom back in the day and plenty of other fpses but am not a fanboy; anyway decided to start watching this for whatever reason and loved it.

chat says a shade under three. i am kinda excited.

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 22 November 2020 20:58 (three years ago) link

I can't believe he's still listing instances of the "come a long way" trope

american primitive stylophone (zchyrs), Sunday, 22 November 2020 21:10 (three years ago) link

By which I mean I 100% believe it, but man, this bit may destroy me

american primitive stylophone (zchyrs), Sunday, 22 November 2020 21:11 (three years ago) link

i appreciate his commitment to the 3 hour format though my favorite video reviews of his were the 20 minute ones (hyrule warriors, forza horizon 4)

ciderpress, Sunday, 22 November 2020 21:14 (three years ago) link

When he gets around to Super Mario Bros 3 I can’t imagine him doing anything short of a 10 hour series

is right unfortunately (silby), Sunday, 22 November 2020 21:16 (three years ago) link

TRUCK HECK

I couldn't make it through the Doom one, but Pac-Man could be good.

saving this for Thanksgiving when I may give it my full attention.

lol, i have never heard of this game.

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Friday, 1 January 2021 18:27 (three years ago) link

finally--i say this very early in the video, though i figure it deserves at least one social media post: WOW. Tokimeki Memorial is an *EXTREMELY* Important Video Game that You Should Know About. it's bigger than chrono trigger, persona, MGS, and GTA. it's monumental. i love it

I trust him

is right unfortunately (silby), Friday, 1 January 2021 18:30 (three years ago) link

bookmarked! i don't know anything about it, and i would like to know. perfect tim rogers content

however, he also raved about god of war and i'm still a little mad about that

Karl Malone, Friday, 1 January 2021 18:34 (three years ago) link

Lol at the Patreon supporter that cancelled their sub because they didn't want to hear Tim talk about games they'd never heard of. Why would you even bother subbing to a Tim Rogers channel if you weren't interested in hearing him ramble on at great length about anything at all, as that basically is all his videos (and the whole appeal of watching them IMO)?

otm

Desperate for him to actually publish a novel but I don’t think he ever will

is right unfortunately (silby), Friday, 1 January 2021 18:56 (three years ago) link

yeah tokimeki memorial is kinda the next most elemental game after tetris, mario, and zelda

ciderpress, Friday, 1 January 2021 21:19 (three years ago) link

it's still zelda though by way of the majora's mask sidequests and general ignorance of the chronology of those two games

ciderpress, Friday, 1 January 2021 21:23 (three years ago) link

watched up to the first intermission and this one's goood

ciderpress, Friday, 1 January 2021 22:33 (three years ago) link

YESSSSS!!! i've been wanting to play this game for a while but no english translation :(

best tim rogers content is that bit within pac man episode where he talks about that game where you tie string around pins to trap dudes.

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 2 January 2021 21:22 (three years ago) link

ok that was enjoyable on the whole but i think the first hour where he places the game in historical context was the strongest part

ciderpress, Sunday, 3 January 2021 00:49 (three years ago) link

well that plus the creeping horror of the 'successful' playthrough. his ruminations afterwards don't really add that much that isn't already expressed there

ciderpress, Sunday, 3 January 2021 00:51 (three years ago) link

HELLO. starting at noon saturday i'll stream a complete game of TOKIMEKI MEMORIAL: FOREVER WITH YOU for sega saturn over at https://t.co/ZM876RMmAc. my goal will be to get megumi mikihara, which as i explain in my review i consider the most interesting route. so follow me please~ pic.twitter.com/AVtnr6fTrJ

Is L.A. Noire really as good as his aside implied in this one?

kniphofia face (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 8 January 2021 00:48 (three years ago) link

I'm prepared to believe it when he gets done talking about it

Canon in Deez (silby), Friday, 8 January 2021 00:51 (three years ago) link

yeah i was surprised to learn he thinks its good, ive only ever heard lukewarm impressions of that game

ciderpress, Friday, 8 January 2021 01:38 (three years ago) link

i kinda hated it!

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Friday, 8 January 2021 02:39 (three years ago) link

i always think "l.a. noire is supposed to good, right?" before remembering that i'm primarily thinking about tim rogers raves throughout the years

Karl Malone, Friday, 8 January 2021 02:41 (three years ago) link

The one risk with Tim Rogers is he likes a lot of stuff, including NASCAR t-shirts, Conan novels, direct to video martial arts movies…

Canon in Deez (silby), Friday, 8 January 2021 02:45 (three years ago) link

80s Japanese idol pop…

Canon in Deez (silby), Friday, 8 January 2021 02:46 (three years ago) link

It’s inspiring to me to learn from someone with the openheartedness to enjoy so much.

Canon in Deez (silby), Friday, 8 January 2021 02:47 (three years ago) link

i like to let him convince me that something is amazing and then give it a shot, it's fun
