feeling like i should get this

Mordy, Sunday, 6 July 2014 01:15 (nine years ago) link

i am enjoying this a lot. i will say it is slow as heck and the interface is as clunky as it gets. and there are a million ways to get distracted from doing whatever it is you're supposed to be doing which is absorbing but still after a couple of hours i will be wondering what the fuck i have even done. but, enjoying a lot.

i haven't even fucked with the crafting yet

my party's about level 8. rolled up a spellcasting rogue and a melee healer. my #1 jam is turn one teleporting enemy archers and casters into the middle of my party and beating the fuck out of them immediately as the enemy melee dudes are closing the distance.

the variety of viable strategies and tactics in the combat is amazing and great, not to mention the whole busy world behind it. talking to animals is great. stealing paintings is great. using one party member to distract a NPC while my rogue picks locks behind him is great.

can't wait to see what the high level spells and skills are all about.

two weeks pass...

I'm still loving the hell out of this game. I can't remember a game where there have been so many different mechanics that remain in play as you refine your playstyle. Even crafting-- I find myself going back to the Abandoned House in the first town, which somehow I consider my "home", and cooking a few days' worth of meals every few hours-- then distributing them to my party, like packing everybody a lunch. That sounds so incredibly lame-- but I am just now realizing I was doing it as a result of the game's very clever balancing.

The one thing baked into the game that I haven't really fucked with is the more sophisticated elemental battle stuff-- one guy shoots a steamcloud arrow, the next guy electrifies the steam, or whatever.

The only thing I'm noticing that kind of skews things is that there are obviously lots of areas where you can choose to engage baddies or not--like goblins, who I gather are pretty sympathetic characters in the narrative--but because levelling up is so slow, and because baddies don't regenerate, and because looting is a big part of the game's economy, there's a huge incentive to kill every aggressive NPC you encounter and probably not much disincentive.

Also it wouldn't have hurt to have had a few dungeons. I get that this game's not supposed to be about grinding but when I'm enjoying a game this much having the option to spend a few hours being "productive" without moving closer to the end of the game would have been nice.

I have a tank, a ranger/dark magic character, a rogue, and a mage in my party. Can't quite get the balance right. I swapped in the mage thinking he'd lag back and supplement the three others with buff spells, but it's not as effective as I thought I'd be. However the rogue is AWESOME in this game if you take the whole roster of scoundrel spells and everybody should have one.

xp Roberto, almost every sidequest in this game ties into the main story eventually, so there's no real way to get offtrack.

worst thing about this game so far - if you dont save constantly you're in for a world of pain. i've beaten boss fights on a couple occasions, forgot the save, then got to repeat the boss fite again and again because sometimes you totally fuck up and get rekt and have to reload.

either way this game is dooooope

Based on recommendation by chatgpt lol, considering this as a two player coop story based game. Would anyone be able to confirm?

(the second one btw)

Ste, Monday, 19 June 2023 08:34 (eleven months ago) link

Yeah, couch co-op works fine in this.

In retrospect I didnt love it as much as the critical consensus; it has a combination of grim edgy elements, lame python humour and overdone dangerous-wizards-vs-oppressive-templars framing, and everything is on fire all! the! time! , but we enjoyed it enough for about 120 hours before tapping out because there was just too much of it

Thanks, might have to check out some vids first then. Story is something we're after more than anything, because we have an infinite amount of coop games where we're just fighting/shooting stuff. But if we can split screen this that's a bonus too.

Talking to animals invariably leads to sad. :(

I’m having a ball playing this right now. Strong recommend at least trying it

hrep (H.P), Tuesday, 20 June 2023 08:30 (eleven months ago) link

Have not tried the multiplayer component, but I've put dozens of hours into Div 2. It's very good. Great combat system and decision making that feels substantial.

Excited for Baldur's Gate 3 around the corner.

Thanks all. We're trying Monster Hunter first (because my friend already owned it), but I think we'll definitely try this one as well.

Ste, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 09:20 (eleven months ago) link

Incidentally if anyone is interested here were the 5 games that Chatgpt recommended for story based coop games

Borderlands 2
Portal 2
Divinity 2
Monster Hunter
A Way Out

Ste, Wednesday, 21 June 2023 09:22 (eleven months ago) link

Cannot recommend against any borderlands game enough. The rest.. they go okay (a way out is more unintentionally funny than anything)

hrep (H.P), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 09:59 (eleven months ago) link

Would not consider monster hunter as a story based game, but definitely good for co-op if it’s your thing!

hrep (H.P), Wednesday, 21 June 2023 09:59 (eleven months ago) link

yeah we tried it briefly last night and the 'story' is very questionable.
