whiney game recco station -- cool, not-difficult games to play with sound off

i haven't been much of a "gamer" since the 90s since I don't hate women

BUT i have dabbled in every other nintendo system (N64, but no gamecube; wii, but no wii u), have played two Mac games (riven, gone home) since the turn of the millennium, and have an iphone where I usually have one or two play games for subway or bedtime goofing off (right now: bad piggies)

I don't like stuff that requires a lot of ambidextrous skills (like shooters — I bought Goldeneye for Wii and played it once) and only like games that you can play with the sound off because I basically see them as a place to put my brain and hands while I listen to music. I like mario 64 and mario galaxy and zelda games and animal crossing. gone home was fun. i really enjoyed the neverhood when it was poppin.

Are there any cool non-neckbeard games to recommend a whiney?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 November 2014 16:54 (ten years ago)

idk, but thats awesome that you're not a neckbeard or a misogynist dude congrats

Limbo

festival culture (Jordan), Saturday, 22 November 2014 18:02 (ten years ago)

that looks cool! I liked World of Goo

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 November 2014 18:03 (ten years ago)

i think you should try binding of isaac which is kinda like zelda

Mordy, Saturday, 22 November 2014 18:05 (ten years ago)

it's gross tho, i know you're picky about aesthetics so maybe check out some screenshots first and see if u like it. if u can handle it i think it's a really fun game.

Mordy, Saturday, 22 November 2014 18:06 (ten years ago)

Ugh, fucking casual

What's your preferred platform(s)? desktop/console/laptop/phone? What venue do you want to plays games on? E.g. some mobile games are great for futzing around with in line, some are better on planes/trains

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Saturday, 22 November 2014 20:09 (ten years ago)

Whiney: Dust City is fucking great

so is Tower of the Blood Lord, which you play in-browser

The Complainte of Ray Tabano, Saturday, 22 November 2014 20:25 (ten years ago)

cave story might be up yr alley? it's modeled after old-school 16bit platformers but has really smooth physics and great world and character design. the only drawback for me is that it's too short.

dogen, lord soto zen (clouds), Saturday, 22 November 2014 20:38 (ten years ago)

xpost whoa, Tower of the Blood Lord is awesome. thanks for that recco

ya'll are the ones who don't know things (Karl Malone), Saturday, 22 November 2014 20:47 (ten years ago)

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Saturday, 22 November 2014 21:03 (ten years ago)

i don't think whiney would like cave story why bc furries

Mordy, Saturday, 22 November 2014 22:22 (ten years ago)

tower of the blood lord is cool - reminds me of shrapnel

If you played Gone Home with the sound off you shd give it another run through with the sound on b/c you missed most of it

ambergris shmambergris (silby), Sunday, 23 November 2014 18:56 (ten years ago)

Tower of the Blood Lord is by Michael Lutz, who did The Uncle Who Works for Nintendo, which I also enjoyed. One of the better twine/twine-esque creators.

Oh, the Uncle... says it makes extensive use of sound but I played it muted and still found it effective.

do you like 2d platform games? if so, the 2 recent Rayman games and wii Donkey Kong are all good.
sports/racing games are ideal to play while listening to music, depends whether you like racing or sports tho
also strategy games- europa universalis etc/ sim city 4 / civilization
maybe xcom?
on iphone - Drop 7!

which systems do you own - wii, mac and iphone? narrows it down a little.

Kinda forgotten by time due to several other """more important""" platformers (braid, fez, limbo, &c&c&c) but I think you & virtually everyone would have fun playing Splosion Man. Goofy platformer with fun mechanics. Haven't played the sequel tho.

we will run the Milkyway. Think about that🌠 (Will M.), Monday, 24 November 2014 19:46 (ten years ago)

Definitely Katamari Damacy. My first time playing that was sort of a revelation, it felt like the first new videogame control scheme since Super Mario Bros. It's just so much FUN to roll that ball around and collect stuff, and it's got this great mash up of surreal/humor/horror/Zen/monster movie feel to it. Controls are SUPER easy.

Actually, upon further evaluation the "dark" ending I remember is one I made up in my head as the happy ending was happening hahahahahahaha

dick wet with chickenshit (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 28 July 2015 02:11 (nine years ago)

i think i'm gonna try nu-simcity even though everyone says it sucks

dick wet with chickenshit (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 28 July 2015 02:16 (nine years ago)

cities: skylines is the same thing except not sucks

adam, Tuesday, 28 July 2015 02:49 (nine years ago)

amazed that you liked braid and weren't pissed at the narrative
i would guess both are true?

you are extreme, Patti LuPone. (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 28 July 2015 03:08 (nine years ago)

i mean, braid was a cornball decemberists game but it was certainly fun to play

simcity is taking hours and hours to download. i have decided to read a book instead.

i needed that qualification whiney.
you should play "little inferno". it's fine on any system, ios included.

you are extreme, Patti LuPone. (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 28 July 2015 03:16 (nine years ago)

whiney if u have played any of the other civs civ 5 should be fine - it's all the normal 4X stuff, build cities, build armies, conquer other cities, research technology etc

The Room 3 is my jam

bricc baby hitlo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 29 November 2015 01:45 (nine years ago)

There's a Room 3? Hooray!

We’re recommending an iPad 3 or iPhone 5 or better for The Room Three, because we’ve had a few issues reported on the iPad 2 and 4S.

Boo!

ledge, Sunday, 29 November 2015 08:31 (nine years ago)

The Room 3 was fun but it had no plot of interest. The final ending is a big "fuck you" to anyone looking for a deeper meaning -- spoilers, the face on mars turns out to be a building with another face on it.

aaaaablnnn (abanana), Sunday, 29 November 2015 13:42 (nine years ago)

I don't go to puzzle games for the plot tbh.

ledge, Sunday, 29 November 2015 15:01 (nine years ago)

I would be fine with The Room 1-3 without any plot. It's that they try to shoehorn in a plot and it's a waste of time.

aaaaablnnn (abanana), Sunday, 29 November 2015 21:04 (nine years ago)

see i WANT the plot and that's why part two sorta soured for me.

Eugene Goostman (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 29 November 2015 21:47 (nine years ago)

wanting a plot from a video game reminds me of thos kotaku posts where they're like THIS HORROR GAME CHILLED ME TO THE BONE and then write a post spoiling the whole thing

bricc baby hitlo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 30 November 2015 15:56 (nine years ago)

well see that's why i didn't explain how the box opens a dimensional pathway to a different universe where you oh shit i'm doing it now aren't i

Machinarium and Botanicula are both in this vein and come recommended!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 21 February 2016 04:48 (nine years ago)

machinarium has an A+ soundtrack, i would not want to play that one with the sound off

ciderpress, Sunday, 21 February 2016 04:59 (nine years ago)

it's like the only game soundtrack in my main music rotation

ciderpress, Sunday, 21 February 2016 05:01 (nine years ago)

whiney i think you would like The Witness, although sound is crucial because some of the puzzles depend on it
