I want to keep the nomination thread faaaaairly clean, and I also want people to jock for their nominations.
Nominate games over there; I'll start making a master list; and, when I post the master list, I will permalink to "lobby" posts from this thread where applicable.

So, this is probably a good thread to tell the board which games to get off our ass and play within the next month to get a precious ballot vote. GO!
― Nhex, Tuesday, 6 January 2015 08:58 (ten years ago) link
Yeah haven't played anything on that list either.
Been trawling through Abandonware for the most part of the year.

Yeah I was thinking about this a few days ago. I only played 3 or 4 games released in 2014, but I actually played more games last year total than I have in a long time, and it's mostly down to PS+ and its constant stream of decent only-slightly-older B list stuff (although the fact I've not jumped to next gen yet maybe plays a part too).
I'll probably have to fill out the rest of my ballot with Oculus Rift demos.

I am going to be playing a bunch of 2014 games over the next month and I will post about them here. I seriously feel like I played ~2 games from 2014 until December (and even then, December's #1 focus was Deadly Premonition, at the end).
The first one I'd like to bring to everyone's attention is This War Of Mine, which puts the player in charge of a group of survivors of some sort of modern day conflict. Your home is cold, your people are starving, and you need to scavenge for stuff. It's disheartening and makes you make some pretty scary choices which you will find uncomfortably easy to do, incredibly quickly. It's super quick to pick up, and doesn't require you looking up the dopest gameplay hax on the internet... just drop in, creep yourself out, leave it for a week, try it again.

And while I am not going to jock for this yet since I only started playing it last night, if you have an Xbox One and a Gold membership, D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die is free right now and apparently scratches that SWERY itch. After finishing the prologue I'm... intrigued, but I know from DP that his stuff takes a while to really sink in.

Just recently had This War of Mine recommended to me - it looks excellent.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 6 January 2015 16:24 (ten years ago) link
this is kind of a narrowly targeted recommendation, but if you're fond of the old Quest for Glory series (specifically the third one, the fourth one, and the VGA remake of the first one), the free game Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is an earnest, loving tribute to it. in fact, i'm pretty sure the reason it's free is because they didn't want to risk lawsuits over how similar it is: it uses the same interface, art style, combat system, landscape layout...anyway, i played the QFG games endlessly as a kid and i found it really fun.

i am 100% the target of that recommendation and I thank u

Ha so I've now beaten D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die basically twice over (over the course of one sick day and one evening). It is pretty short. In fact my use of the term "one sick day" implies that I even needed that long... not really.
Obviously this is a very narrowly targeted recommendation. Do you have an Xbox One? Do you like things that are kind of weird? It is emphatically NOT Deadly Premonition, it plays it less straight (if you believe that's even possible), but it does share some similarities -- the "Profiling" from DP is expanded into something much more interesting here (but you are still just collecting the clues and then the detective solves the case). But the mysteries themselves are interesting and it takes you the right amount of time to "figure them out" on your own, and similar to DP, it feels like the game's presentation "earns" the twists that occur (aside from one, but meh).
There's a good chance I'll vote for this. SWERY is ridiculous but he is also pretty damn good at making compelling (for games) mysteries.

if anyone's interested in trying out Five Nights At Freddy's 1 or 2, IndieGala has 'em split up between two bundles. (while i like them both, they're so short that the bundle price seems a LOT more reasonable).

this war of mine sounds fantastic
i bought 5naf both on pc and on iphone and did not feel short-changed, though i don't know why i'd bother with the second one really

i'm wondering how well it runs/looks/plays on the iphone before i buy it
― Mordy, Monday, 12 January 2015 22:51 (nine years ago) link
i'm less into the second 5naf because winning is much harder, but on second thought it's probably my fault for trying to play with just a laptop trackpad. the new art and the way it expands the story is cool, definitely worth watching a let's play if you liked the first one.

I think I mentioned it on the other thread, The Last of Us: Left Behind DLC is a clear no-brainer for me. Though IIRC TLOU already placed last year, I'm sure Left Behind and/or Remastered will get some votes.
― Nhex, Tuesday, 13 January 2015 04:41 (nine years ago) link
the first 5naf, iirc, worked fine on an iphone 4s, though it did take a long time to start the first time i opened it
i think in terms of atmosphere it's more of a desktop game tho tbh. really i feel like one ought to play it on some anonymous beige 90s stack, and that it ought to somehow open when what you are actually trying to play is myst
