Will be revealed at 7am PT/10am ET through Nintendo's official channels.

It's only a preview trailer. Substanstive reveal expected next week.

Remind me what this thing is again?

Nobody knows yet.

Hybdrid console/handheld. Good news is you don't have to choose between what Ninty platform you get, all games come to one place.

Bad news.. well, maybe it looks like a a Frankenstein monster. Expect to see the concept today and software lineup next week.

abcfsk, Thursday, 20 October 2016 06:14 (eight years ago) link

Gettin' ready for thread title change!

Nhex, Thursday, 20 October 2016 09:24 (eight years ago) link

Seriously though the one positive thing (maybe) coming out from this is that it seems like it's been known about, in development for long enough where we might actually get to see something substantial in terms of info and real games tomorrow. The rumors have been for a March 2017 release date for ages.

Nhex, Thursday, 20 October 2016 09:26 (eight years ago) link

The March 2017 date is official, from Nintendo.

I don't think we'll see much of games tomorrow since this is labelled as a 3 minute preview. The solid word on the street is a bigger thing next week.

But yeah, the March date was, in the words of Nintendo execs, partially to ensure a strong (1st party) lineup for the first year of this thing. Unlike the Wii U which relied on 3rd party ports.

abcfsk, Thursday, 20 October 2016 10:01 (eight years ago) link

Yeah that's a good thing unless it means "we're not expecting any 3rd party support at all this time around", which is probably does.

JimD, Thursday, 20 October 2016 10:55 (eight years ago) link

feel like at this point if you're still a Nintendo fan you just accept it :(
that said I skipped both Wiis so I might jump back in with this system

Nhex, Thursday, 20 October 2016 11:01 (eight years ago) link

I don't really care about western 3rd party support on a nintendo console. And I don't think Nintendo's got much riding on it either. It's irrelevant. The DS and 3DS thrived without it. Nintendo needs to offer an alternative.

My PC already makes whatever MS / Sony console I reluctantly end up buying redundant in terms of your Call of Dutys and sports games.

abcfsk, Thursday, 20 October 2016 12:36 (eight years ago) link

Well actually sports games is the one genre still better on PSXbox than PC.

lol Nintendo Switch is a terrible name
Looks kinda dope tho

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:11 (eight years ago) link

Name isn't so bad. Does look cool. But maybe that's just Zelda.

remy bean, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:12 (eight years ago) link

I'm totally on board, despite the pretty terrible name

CraigG, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:13 (eight years ago) link

trailer is v weird, thing itself looks p cool

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:17 (eight years ago) link

Switch is a little dumb but leagues better than Wii or WiiU or GameCube

remy bean, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:21 (eight years ago) link

Terrible trailer o_O

Like the thing tho.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:23 (eight years ago) link

the first time the dude walked over and put the little controllers on and picked it up I whispered "what is this devilry?!?"

haha

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:26 (eight years ago) link

i am into this!

abcfsk, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:32 (eight years ago) link

so, hardware-wise it's a really neat nvidia shield?

mh 😏, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:33 (eight years ago) link

what does the core system come with tho? How much extra shit are they requiring me to buy?

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:33 (eight years ago) link

agreed on dumb name, cool looking device. not sure about the detachable controller nubs but i like the rest

also why make a trailer where people are doing more fun things they would probably rather be doing than playing video games

also the DS had awesome 3rd party support, what you smoking. Even the 3DS's third-party support is way better than their consoles

Nhex, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:34 (eight years ago) link

I would guess it comes with the display/dock/controller wings and the standalone controller is extra?

mh 😏, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:38 (eight years ago) link

DS and 3DS have great Japanese 3rd party support yes, not western. Because this is also a portable I believe they'll be able to retain Japanese 3rd party support, further differentiating their lineup from the competition.

abcfsk, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:40 (eight years ago) link

Vanagon cameo

calstars, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:43 (eight years ago) link

xp yeah I think the standalone controller is basically the Pro controller like on the Wii/U

Nhex, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:43 (eight years ago) link

Just consolidating 1st party output to one device is pretty huge, hopefully this means more variety as they don't need to work on 2 Mario Kart games at once for example

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:49 (eight years ago) link

pending further information, i am into this. third party support is good from an adoption/longevity pov, Nintendo standards on a powerful handheld is cool (especially if it's more comfortably designed than the wii u tablet)

Cautious optimism

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:54 (eight years ago) link

Has it been confirmed that there's no touch? People are surprised there's no use of that in the trailer...

Nhex, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:56 (eight years ago) link

is this likely to be region locked?

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:59 (eight years ago) link

@ArcadeGirl64 53s53 seconds ago
As I previously reported in my September 2nd post, Nintendo Switch is 100% region free.

abcfsk, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:07 (eight years ago) link

The people whose leaks have been most accurate e.g. Emily Rogers have been saying that it will be region free, and Iwata said on a few occasions that they were thinking about it. This console has got to have some big dumb thing wrong with it tho so it could be that :/

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:08 (eight years ago) link

holding out for the big mario party announcement

nxd, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:09 (eight years ago) link

I'm going to end up having to buy two of these.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:31 (eight years ago) link

i was also surprised that apparently there's no touch-capability.

i haven't had a nintendo console since the wii (which i attempted to mod and ended up bricking within 2 years), but i'm not sure this is going to be the one.

the whole gimmick where you can transform it into a handheld and go off to the williamsburg party and play videogames on the rooftop at the bbq - that's kinda cool in theory but i know i would never do something like that. when i walk my dog in the early morning, i like to just sit on the bench and pay attention to her, i don't want to resume my dragon quest at that moment. and after getting beaten down IRL 2v2 basketball underneath a bustling highway, i know my bros aren't going to want to play nba 2k18 with me. they'll probably be mad at me for being bad at basketball irl, 15 minutes earlier. i don't play games on public transport either. i'm just not a handheld person, so i feel like the main purpose of the system design isn't aimed toward me.

kind of raisin' an eyebrow at the cartridge thing, although maybe these days cartridges can handle resource-intensive games? either way, i guess it has to be a cartridge so that you can Switch(tm) your game into mobile mode so you can level up while you're eating brunch and windsurfing in the afternoon.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:47 (eight years ago) link

whoooa, that came out way more negative than i meant it to be, sorry. i'm sure this will be a cool system and i will be jealous of all people getting to play the nintendo 1st party franchise sequels, for real.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:50 (eight years ago) link

solid state storage is fast in a way optical media will never be, and I get the impression that the Japanese market wouldn't be about a download-only platform. Also yeah carrying around an optical drive would work about as well as a discman.

slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:52 (eight years ago) link

(a discman that needed to stream textures to the GPU without skipping.)

slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:52 (eight years ago) link

idk i think the portability is actually pretty interesting/compelling. the best thing about the Xbox one right now is how it integrates into the windows 10 ecosystem. i can play it on my pc in my office, on my laptop in bed, or on the TV directly from the Xbox in the usual way. this limited portability is pretty awesome, and extending the possibility to take the game with you anywhere is a logical extension and seems pretty cool. Xps

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:54 (eight years ago) link

yeh I play handhelds mostly at home, in bed etc. playing an Atlus game while cycling is on TV is my jam!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:00 (eight years ago) link

Kind of funny that there were no kids in that video, unless I missed something.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:06 (eight years ago) link

I think the average age of someone playing video games is now around 30

mh 😏, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:07 (eight years ago) link

goin' for chill hipster demo?

Nhex, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:07 (eight years ago) link

going for that disposable income demo for sure

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:11 (eight years ago) link

I would like to see all the cables involved for connectivity ie power/recharging etc

The WiiU is a monster for too many cables, I don't want to go through that again.

"Stop researching my life" (Ste), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:14 (eight years ago) link

i can play it on my pc in my office,

oh is that a thing? like, via remote desktop or something? this makes me pretty glad i don't have an xbox.

thats crazy they made a new 2d zelda everyone thought theyd upgrade the graphics of an old one

lag∞n, Tuesday, 18 June 2024 15:45 (six months ago) link

you play as zelda in this one too. revolutionary

ciderpress, Tuesday, 18 June 2024 15:47 (six months ago) link

what seriously thats funny they finally did it but not in one of the major releases, nintendo being nintendo

lag∞n, Tuesday, 18 June 2024 15:49 (six months ago) link

zelda looks amazing, also wanna get DQ 1-3, RS2, Fantasian have heard good things about but looked a bit rough
that funko game tho lol

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will probably push us to get a Switch. my kid LOVES Super Paper Mario.

i got to the final save point of thousand-year door before the final boss fight on the night before i left home for college, and i never went back and finished it. great game though

lag∞n, Tuesday, 18 June 2024 21:27 (six months ago) link

TYD is a classic. I never played any of the ones after it, but from I understand that's where Nintendo drew the line on creating original characters in the Paper Mario games?

Nhex, Thursday, 20 June 2024 13:29 (six months ago) link

the party members, yeah. for some reason they decided those weren't allowed anymore

I don't know whether to buy SM Wonder or SM 1000 Doors.

Has anyone tried Animal Well? I like the updated-Jet Set Willy vibes

do you like jumping on platforms or do you like turn-based rpg battles?

ciderpress, Thursday, 20 June 2024 16:19 (six months ago) link

Yeah, good point. I've always wanted to like RPGs, but if I'm honest with myself I just really love fucking jumping.

two months pass...

theyre saying the switch 2 is announced this week

lag∞n, Sunday, 1 September 2024 18:00 (three months ago) link

would imagine it would launch with mario cart since the switch didnt even get a new one, maybe new mario 3d too since its been a while for that too, rumors about more support for big third party games

lag∞n, Sunday, 1 September 2024 18:02 (three months ago) link

*announced this month

lag∞n, Sunday, 1 September 2024 18:02 (three months ago) link

I'll believe it when I see it. Wouldn't surprise me if they hold off until October.

octobeard, Sunday, 1 September 2024 18:12 (three months ago) link

they made like 100 tracks for mario kart 8 it would be weird to start from scratch rather than just release a new Ultimate version that packs all of that in. but maybe

ciderpress, Sunday, 1 September 2024 20:03 (three months ago) link

metroid prime 4 will obviously be the game that launches with it but is also on switch 1, like zelda last time around

them not making a followup to mario odyssey in 7 years is the only other really conspicuous one for a launch year game. they didn't hold back splatoon 3 or zelda so idk what else

ciderpress, Sunday, 1 September 2024 20:09 (three months ago) link

and yeah this one will in theory be at least ps4 specs so could get ports of some of the big late ps4 games for the people who would be excited about like RDR2 or assassins creed valhalla on switch for some reason. i feel like steam deck has undercut the 'i cant believe thats running on a switch' feeling though, its normal now

ciderpress, Sunday, 1 September 2024 20:18 (three months ago) link

they need a bigger game than metroid for launch, and theres no bigger game than mario kart baby

lag∞n, Sunday, 1 September 2024 22:05 (three months ago) link

some have speculated that theyve been sitting on a new mario kart cause the old one just kept selling, guess they would need to upgrade the graphics if it was originally made for the switch, also theyd need to make it better and different than 8 deluxe which idk what thatd look like, and yeah they did just release a bunch of tracks for 8 which is kinda weird if youre planning on releasing a new one soon

lag∞n, Sunday, 1 September 2024 22:15 (three months ago) link

metroid is surely "big" enough, but they would need to have something family friendly too, so mario kart 9 is as good a guess as any

there have been switch 2 rumors for years so who knows

c u (crüt), Monday, 2 September 2024 02:36 (three months ago) link

the best selling metroid was ~3m mario kart sold ~60m on the switch

lag∞n, Monday, 2 September 2024 02:47 (three months ago) link

feels like Mario Kart 8 is still getting updates it would be weird to do a new one now

frogbs, Monday, 2 September 2024 02:50 (three months ago) link

xp they've outright said they will show their next console before the end of the current fiscal year so it's not rumors anymore

ciderpress, Monday, 2 September 2024 02:51 (three months ago) link

I'm sure they'll launch a flagship Mario game and Metroid Prime 4. Maybe... now hear me out, maybe they have a deal with Team Cherry to make Silksong an exclusive for a year after it launches on the Switch 2. Would be a massive coup!

z_tbd, Thursday, 26 September 2024 16:53 (two months ago) link

i like how the new model keeps everything we know and love about the first switch, but brings it into the mid '20s

z_tbd, Thursday, 26 September 2024 16:54 (two months ago) link

yeah its exactly what everyone wanted people are saying its about as powerful as the low end xbox which is good for nintendo, all the big games have to be tuned for that machine anyway so if the switch 2 sells well pretty reasonable to expect that third party aaa games will be released for it

lag∞n, Thursday, 26 September 2024 16:59 (two months ago) link

i also like that it launches with the optional Duck Hunt Super Scope 2.0 accessory. if enough people pick that up we might finally get battle clash 2

I could see them launching with two models, but I suspect they'll wait a while so they can get people to buy it twice

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 27 November 2024 00:55 (three weeks ago) link

I was under the impression the base model will NOT be an OLED based on parts/supply chain info that's leaked.

octobeard, Wednesday, 27 November 2024 01:05 (three weeks ago) link

So I’ve been tasked with getting my 8 yr old kid some sort of gaming system for Xmas and I am completely clueless. X box and PlayStation 5 are like $500 which is too much. Thinking around $200 or so. We may move overseas so ideally it would not be reliant on the internet. He’s currently playing Apple Arcade and Minecraft so I dunno is the switch a good cheaper alternative?

Heez, Wednesday, 27 November 2024 01:23 (three weeks ago) link

you can get the portable only version the switch lite for 200, the regular one you can plug into the tv is 300, and yeah the switch is great its the best, has a lot of games good 4 kids too

lag∞n, Wednesday, 27 November 2024 01:29 (three weeks ago) link

Target has the regular switch for 225 with mario kart included. that's a good deal imo.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 27 November 2024 05:21 (three weeks ago) link

$225 is pretty dang good even without Mario Kart, though if you can wait another 6 months for the Switch 2... it might cost $400, so who knows.

switch 2 will definitely not be available for $225 for years
