Played the demo last year and had a good time but it was a pain how fast your equipment broke, don't know if they rebalanced it for finished thing though. They managed to make the archery feel amazing compared to the souls games.

i think durability was removed entirely

awesome, back on the hype train.

devvvine, Friday, 3 February 2017 19:12 (nine years ago)

the beta/alphas were ok but i don't know if i'm getting into this day one. i do like that the dark muted tones + lighting remind me of demons souls

the revenant system is like bloodstains in dark souls except you can see the player name and you can summon them in as an npc invader to fight and get a chance get a loot drop of the armor/weapons they have equipped. imagine if ds had that

dollar general (am0n), Sunday, 5 February 2017 16:57 (nine years ago)

i wish it had some sort of actual pvp system, it'll be interesting to see how they add that in eventually.

change display name (Jordan), Sunday, 5 February 2017 18:47 (nine years ago)

thats why its not a day one for me. wait for the multiplayer and/or price drop

Anyone playing this yet? Is it as Souls x Diablo as it looks?

thomasintrouble, Wednesday, 8 February 2017 15:18 (nine years ago)

I've never played Diablo but I'm giving it a shot this weekend (it's been downloading for days thanks to my terrible internet).

Loving this so far, it feels really good. So far none of the enemies are particularly difficult but there's very little room for error, one combo and it's over.

So many little systems to get used to though, it feels like my first Souls game.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 9 February 2017 16:03 (nine years ago)

yeah this is fun. i like ninja gaiden and i like loot and i most of dark souls.

adam, Thursday, 9 February 2017 23:52 (nine years ago)

headshots with the bow are ridiculously satisfying

adam, Thursday, 9 February 2017 23:53 (nine years ago)

Yeah, the ease of switching to the bow and back is the best part about how the controls are set up (compared to Souls).

I got through the first mission (not counting the intro/Dark Souls riff). Really enjoying everything but the amount of stuff you pick up and the obligation to pore over menus of weapons/armor trying to figure out what to use is stressing me out already.

4th boss (electric beast thing) is stymieing me at the moment but i feel ima break on thru soon.

in my experience the way to enjoy games with crazy fucking inventory/smithing/crafting/etc systems is to acknowledge that i will never achieve perfect min/max and to strive for "good enough."

adam, Sunday, 12 February 2017 20:39 (nine years ago)

sooo what weapon types are you using?

Still working through the (generously long) Nioh 3 demo. It feels great and they clearly made an effort to make it more approachable and let you play how you want (the ninja/samurai instant switch rules). But good lord are there a lot of systems and combo button presses to keep track of. Way beyond a Souls game.

So far it still feels less immersive than a Souls game too, like I'm running around making sure I find all the encounters and little bits to give me bonuses that I don't understand yet, rather than exploring a fully cohesive world. But I also like the exploration system, how going through the level eventually shows you more of the map and everything you missed, and the system of chasing fat spirit cats to get you to go off the main path.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Friday, 20 February 2026 18:11 (one month ago)

I felt very overwhelmed by systems in like 30 minutes of demo time and am steeling myself to go back in over the weekend

Also idk if it improves when you have fewer tutorial allies crowding the screen, but the sheer amount of particle effects and movement on screen made me feel like I couldn't easily read what was going on or whether I'd already killed the demon I believed myself to be battering

The English va immediately made me feel strangely queasy as well, had to hop back to the title screen to change it

Sgt. Biscuits, Friday, 20 February 2026 18:29 (one month ago)

Yeah, having allies is definitely not the real game (although I like the system where you can choose to fight the avatars of real players, in order to summon the co-op avatars of real players).

I beat the demo boss, Jakotso-Baba (the snake lady), and that one really teaches you that this is not a Souls game. I kept trying to play how I had been playing most of the rest of the game, using ninja form and dodging/mist-ing behind enemies, but that was absolutely not working here. So I had to get used to the samurai rhythm of blocking/deflecting all attacks, letting go of block to attack briefly, ki pulsing, and immediately going back to block as fast as possible (and mixing in the burst breaks and various special types of attacks when possible).

There's also a very different pace to the boss fights that's less steady than Souls games -- you feel like you aren't doing any damage, but then get huge damage windows when the boss eventually runs out of ki, and then you only have to get them down to ~1/3rd health and use your invincible living weapon form to finish the job.

This is a good thread for illustrating the differences between From and Nioh approaches: https://www.reddit.com/r/Nioh/comments/1r62xg2/help_souls_vet_first_nioh_gamenioh_3_what_is_this/

It's a LOT to keep in mind as far as the controls and all the different systems (and in Souls games I usually try and give myself as little to think about as possible as far as my build), but I think I'm going to keep going with it.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Thursday, 26 February 2026 17:53 (three weeks ago)

On the one hand I'm enjoying playing it, but it's just such a game (pejorative). On the one hand I like that you can eventually see the map and everything you missed, but on the other it feels like checking boxes (literally). I've been ignoring all the weapon combos and stances and it's been working out just fine, but that might be because I accidentally explored an area way beyond my level (even though it says "level X area" on the map and when you enter it) and now I'm overleveled for everywhere else. I can barely remember to keep using my ninja skills, guardian spirit attack, and familiar summon items as well as all the basic attacks in two different forms.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 March 2026 14:44 (one week ago)

I finished it and loved it but it’s definitely the easiest Nioh. I’d recommend Nioh 2 for more challenging gameplay and less open world checklist type activities.

ColinO, Wednesday, 11 March 2026 21:25 (one week ago)

I had a funny thing happen where I was starting the Battle for Mikatagahara, which starts with a cut scene. I thought "oh, I don't have any healing or other items, they must take those away for this section to make it harder or more immersive." It was pretty brutal to get through without taking damage, and that was when I realized that you can toggle your item shortcuts to a secondary menu (all of which were blank), lol.

Colin, that makes sense, it would be very different without ninja form, but ninja form is also very fun.
