it's been so long since i've played smash and i missed the last one completely so i'm gonna have to spend ages re-auditioning all the characters to see which ones i like now

also there's way more characters now that exist outside of context for me which is weird. with melee i think i had played all the source games except ice climbers and fire emblem, now there uh a lot more

i don’t really ‘get’ these games

however i’m still steamed they nerfed solid snake’s sweet, thicc buttocks for this one

theyre mostly just mindless fun couch multiplayer nonsense though some ppl get really into them as competitive fighting games too

I had the Wii U smash but played relatively little it and didn’t even really try out a lot of the characters so I’m ready to play dozens of hours of this and hopefully get friends over for it also.

Smash 4 is already so popular in the fighting scene, I wonder how much bigger it will get with this version, since I assume there's gonna be far more Switch owners out in the population.

We (as a family) played a lot of Smash on the Wii. I liked to play as Kirby and did pretty well against them until I recognized that I was literally playing children.

I have an almost 6 year old & 9 year old so I dont want to end up with me and 9 year old enjoying this and tears from the young 'un.

I think Smash is fun even when you don't know what you're doing, because there's so much chaos that even button mashing seems to get results.

yeah smash is designed for casual couch play, the online & competitive stuff is an offshoot for the people who care about it. it's not co-op though obv, it's a fighting game... so if you specifically want a co-op experience then Mario would be more appropriate

past entries have let you set handicaps so i doubt they'd remove that feature

I think my copy arrives today. We ave plans tonight and I'm out of town this weekend, so I told the kids to spend their time training, because when I come back I am going to kick their asses.

In all seriousness, my younger daughter is psyched to play as Villager. As a handicap she used to make me play as Jigglypuff, Ice Climbers and Olimar, because we could never figure out what they hell those characters were doing. Jigglypuff just fell asleep, iirc.

trying to make the important day 1 decision of playing with my own fucked up control scheme that my brain likes or brute forcing default controls until they feel natural so that if i ever play on someone else's system i dont have to be that guy that has to set up a new profile before playing

fyi after kirby and mario your first actual unlock in world of light is a choice between marth, sheik, and villager, so if you want a particular one of those 3 asap then just go into world of light to get them quick

classic mode feels like the fast way to unlock characters playing solo, the runs are pretty fast and you get a challenger at the end of each

world of light is cool but it's a lot of stuff

up to 42 characters or so, this takes a while even if you get one every 10 minutes

this game is amazing. Kirby's down special is taking me places, and I refuse to develop additional skills or fighters.

I’ve watched the world’s #1 smash player, zero, on twitch the past two days. He used a trick to unlock every character quickly. Pretty much all he had to do was play whatever he wanted for a while to raise overall distance travelled. Then he switched in-game language (to quickly reset) and maybe he switched logged in user while doing so (?). Then he played the first level of classic mode (I think that mode) and quickly killed himself. A new challenger appeared every time. He then beat the challenger and repeated the trick by going back to the change language screen.

spirit rayman sonic is a jerk

I realize ppl are going to want to cheese the unlocks but I’d rather just play the game for a few days, I’ll have the characters for the whole rest of time I don’t need to have non-fun this weekend

there's nothing about SSB that makes this it inherently more of a button-masher. just like any other fighting game you can get away with playing like that against other people that are at that level, but there is a straightforward logic to how each character's set of moves suggests different combos and once you start figuring that out you'll be able to beat people that button mash.

the beautiful thing about SSB that makes it feel more elegant than most other fighters imo is that there is no memorization of commands involved at all, you don't input a string of button presses that then lock the character into an ability. every character responds to the same commands in ways that are fairly predictable, so once you have a feel for how to use each directional basic, special, smash, and air attack on one character you can then translate that into a rough approximation of how to use any other character (not very well, necessarily, but at least beyond button-mashing.) and the other great thing about the simple command system (of directional + A or B,) is that it allows players to quickly string together these abilities in infinitely complex ways, which involves developing an intuitive sense of how the abilities interact with the physics of the game, how far and in which direction an ability moves the enemy and how long it renders them unable to move so you can follow up the previous attack and stay on the offensive. getting a feel for that is really where the depth comes from, with characters flying further after they've taken more damage, and at different rates for different character weights.

incineroar is potent, if hilariously slow. His classic mode is a breeze.

some of these world of light challenges seem to be saying "you don't have the right spirits yet" because they feel impossible.

*spirits or skills, I suppose. Some of the items in that tree are absurd.

yeah look at the power level of the fight in the top right, the 3 star ones are usually around 9000 which is way higher than you early on. you gotta level up/collect better spirits to make them more manageable

this feels a bit like that subzero game MK tried but without the amazing cutscenes

It’s laggy and kind of all over the place. Nintendo didn’t do a network test for this so it’s likely improvements will come. I haven’t gotten/tried an Ethernet adapter yet, but I might. I haven’t played much online but maybe I’ll make an ilxor arena sometime over the weekend and post about it but I’d want someone to commit in advance to hang out there w me because it’s no fun just sitting there waiting for someone to join a lobby

it's like any other fighting game in that it's as good as the worst internet connection in the game. the only difference here is that it's on a system that most people use on wifi so the average connection quality is worse, and you may be playing with 4 players instead of 2

OK, first family match done! I won, a lot, but not all the time, surely due to playing with the stupid joycon vs. my favored Pro, but also not really knowing what anything does. Tons of fun, of course.

yeah if you like Super Smash Bros., this is the best version on Nintendo's best console, and you should get it. If you have friends, this is not the most accessible thing to do with your friends on Switch (that's Mario Kart), but it's more accessible than a "real" fighting game.

I don't know how to sell Smash to someone who's never played it before. I'd say it's sui generis but some stripped down imitators have been developed in recent years, some of them well-regarded, so it's more accurate to say it's genre-defining. It's both a deep competitive game and a goofy party game with lots of explosions and chaos and getting to play Bowser vs. Pikachu vs. Princess Zelda vs. the dog from Duck Hunt.
