ps4, released before 2018.
"retro" ("16-bit" graphics looking, i think?)
platform (i think, space is two-dimensional with a top-down pov). you roam fairly large spaces and port between different "worlds" with different monsters. there are various maze-like walls and little niches etc kind of like the og zelda. the different "worlds" you "port" to are kind of random iirc? if you die you end up back at the beginning so in that sense it's kind of rogue-like?
your gun is always firing at the nearest monster. there is no "fire gun" button. you just collect power-ups that change or increase the power of your gun. the monsters are various hellspawn ghouls. your powerups are named nasty things like "lord vladimir's entrails" or "wendemeer's gallblatter" or the like.
you can choose the character you play. the character you start with is a librarian? you "unlock" different characters as you make progress. the bg story is a "professor" has discovered a portal to another evil dimension and you must enter it or some such.
i can't find it in the wikipedia list of ps4 games. have no idea what the title is.

sounds like a mashup of isaac and gungeon but neither of those had a librarian
― ciderpress, Thursday, 30 April 2020 00:14 (five years ago)
Risk of Rain?
And yeah there's a bunch of roguelike shooter like Issac/Gungeon
― Evan, Thursday, 30 April 2020 00:50 (five years ago)
I thought of Enter the Gungeon, but I haven't actually played it. The auto-gun sounds like a little distinct, at least...

it does sound a lot like gungeon.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3kPMRA_JYE

none of those, nope! it's probably a knockoff of gungeon? i'll check around a little more.

"Journey into a surreal multiverse in pursuit of the elusive Professor Elinberg, who disappeared through a portal to the void in his library"
― thomasintrouble, Thursday, 30 April 2020 17:28 (five years ago)
that's definitely it. is it any fun?
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 30 April 2020 18:13 (five years ago)
It looks fun but I've not actually played it.
― thomasintrouble, Thursday, 30 April 2020 21:10 (five years ago)
ha, never heard of it. maybe even pre-dates Gungeon by six months (though ETG was publicized/developed for years, might've gotten early access)
― Nhex, Thursday, 30 April 2020 21:44 (five years ago)
...joke's on me, added to my Steam wishlist December 2015. there's too many indie games to keep track of.
― Nhex, Thursday, 30 April 2020 21:45 (five years ago)
Binding of Isaac took over my gaming life for the past 2 years. Too addicting.

Haha. Yeah reviews don't seem great...
Try some of the others mentioned initially? Some are more "bullet hell" than others.
There's also more in the Smash TV style. Notably one called Xeno Crisis that came out not too long ago in all sorts of formats, even Genesis/Mega Drive.

I spent ages the other day trying to remember the name of a really old game. All I had in my head to go on was - you're chasing someone or they're chasing you?- side scrolling maybe?- shopping trolleys?
I finally worked it out after lots of googling and youtubing. Gonna leave this here and bet myself one of you lot knows it immediately and I should have just asked here like map did.

my first thought was Metrocross but doesn't really fit. how old is old?
― thomasintrouble, Thursday, 7 May 2020 09:57 (five years ago)
oh wow of course. Keystone Kapers right? haven't played that since I was about 6
― thomasintrouble, Thursday, 7 May 2020 13:41 (five years ago)
Yes, Keystone Kapers. Good fun but like many games of that era absolutely rock solid. I spent months playing that and Tutankham.
