avatár the way of watár (voodoo chili), Monday, 6 March 2023 21:33 (two years ago)

i hope the tears in the kingdom can be repaired. probably several ancillary tears and then one major rip near the middle, right through hyrule castle

z_tbd, Monday, 6 March 2023 21:34 (two years ago)

xp it's definitely tears in the fabric of reality. also tears in link's tunic

I was gifted a Switch and hadn't really gamed since I was a kid. This will be the first new game that I've been excited about since... the Mario game where he can turn into a raccoon? Or something?

I'm in the second phase of the Master Sword trials and digging it. Can't wait for this!!!

Cow_Art, Monday, 6 March 2023 23:06 (two years ago)

three weeks pass...

gamers are freaking out that nintendo isnt providing them with the customary level of marketing for this game lol

lag∞n, Monday, 27 March 2023 14:39 (two years ago)

as long as the pre-order hits on 5/12, why complain?

deadmauZedong (voodoo chili), Monday, 27 March 2023 14:42 (two years ago)

it might just be the youtubers who rely on that stuff for c0ntent

yeah the guys who make like 2 hour videos breaking down a 1 min trailer

ciderpress, Monday, 27 March 2023 14:49 (two years ago)

that said,

Join The Legend of #Zelda series producer, Eiji Aonuma, for roughly 10 minutes of gameplay from The Legend of Zelda: #TearsOfTheKingdom on 3/28 at 7:00 a.m. PT on our YouTube channel.

nintendo saw ppl making flying machines and riding launched tree trunks and were like oh this is what you sickos like ok

lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 14:54 (two years ago)

i love the idea to make the monster parts actually useful for a reason besides exchanging for fun bokoblin masks

yeah would be cool if the items in general are more useful and varied

ya it doesnt really reference botw at all

lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:18 (two years ago)

seems like with the new powers the game will be pretty puzzley but not with just one or even a set number of solutions which is cool and unusual imo

lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:18 (two years ago)

I need to get back on the Master Sword quest. I managed to make it to the very end and oooooh shit nonono did not allocate my resources very well.

Can’t wait for this, so stoked.

Cow_Art, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:20 (two years ago)

idk i would contend that a puzzle without a fixed solution or number of solutions is an obstacle, not a puzzle

ciderpress, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:20 (two years ago)

its a puzzling distinction

lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:23 (two years ago)

tip re the trial of the master sword in the final trials theres nine ancient arrows three chests of three and finding them all makes it much easier

lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:23 (two years ago)

I paid zero attention to video games for decades and only got into BOTW about a year ago so this pre-release hype is all new to me.

I'm assuming there will be a shitload of people sprinting to finish the game ASAP for internet glory? How long would something like that take to do?

joygoat, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:28 (two years ago)

i mean i'm sure at least one person will but these games are open and dont have much story to spoil so people will take their time

Cinta Kaz is comin' to town (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:31 (two years ago)

is this game looking to be more like a big DLC or more like a majora's mask

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:44 (two years ago)

the latter imo

lag∞n, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:45 (two years ago)

did botw have a long game-spanning sidequest chain i forget. if not they need to bring that back

ciderpress, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:51 (two years ago)

ludicrously capacious bag (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:53 (two years ago)

ciderpress, Tuesday, 28 March 2023 15:54 (two years ago)

I have tried that but it still plays way too much before that comes in.

Finding out how to turn off Sidon was the best day of my Hyrule life.

gyac, Friday, 4 October 2024 15:52 (one year ago)

yeah the blood moon cut scene is annoying; it should stop running after the idk 10th time

if you shoot those sprites they drop $$ but you can't literally catch them afaik

rob, Friday, 4 October 2024 15:53 (one year ago)

I’d eat a marble rock roast ngl

gyac, Friday, 4 October 2024 17:55 (one year ago)

I suspect the blood moon scene needs to play out because part of it's purpose is memory/cache flushing, saving, etc? I am only guessing this, but mainly bcs I know you can force a blood moon (seen it referred to as a 'panic moon') by doing shit that wigs out the game, so it does one as a sort of reset.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 7 October 2024 02:54 (one year ago)

yeah i think thats right

lag∞n, Monday, 7 October 2024 03:13 (one year ago)

Oh I didn’t know that - fair enough!

- I managed to get all the way to an island on a makeshift raft of a piece of wood, two fans and a battery
- but before I did that I rescued a shipwrecked guy by following a faint trail of brightbloom seeds across the sea
- bananas!
- I need more money basically all the time
- more towns should have stables
- firing puffshrooms at monster encampments is extremely good. For me, not them

gyac, Monday, 7 October 2024 07:50 (one year ago)

Puffshrooms are v useful when fighting lynels.

na (NA), Wednesday, 9 October 2024 14:06 (one year ago)

That royal hidden passage cave that never ends is unreal.

Climbing around this decaying castle full of monsters and I’m like is this…Soulsborne? For kids?

Anyway I googled this and found this out and lmao this is me too, having completed all four temples without a single armour upgrade!

gyac, Sunday, 13 October 2024 15:54 (one year ago)

Ha. I still don't have a Switch, but Echoes of Wisdom looks more enticing than the other games because the mechanics seem very A Boy & His Blob.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Sunday, 13 October 2024 16:59 (one year ago)

I finished the whole game without ever upgrading armour. It didn't feel that extreme, although I did maintain a strategy of running away and attacking from a distance throughout.

Iain Mew (if), Sunday, 13 October 2024 17:02 (one year ago)

ha thats wild im fully focused on getting the best gear when playing these games, and getting all the gear

lag∞n, Sunday, 13 October 2024 18:22 (one year ago)

Yeah I don’t tend to play like that, I very much go off on a whim and so I’ve cleared all the temples and done a million shrines etc but I’m still with “hit Link hard enough and it’s instant death” armour. Well, I didn’t want to finish this game yet anyway! Also upgrading my armour means I don’t have to spend so much time cooking.

gyac, Sunday, 13 October 2024 18:49 (one year ago)

theres even the whole big clothes themed side quest in tears, they get it

lag∞n, Sunday, 13 October 2024 18:58 (one year ago)

Ha yeah I got that big stupid hat, that quest was annoying. And I never wear the big stupid hat.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Sunday, 13 October 2024 21:52 (one year ago)

lol

lag∞n, Sunday, 13 October 2024 21:59 (one year ago)

The easiest temple monster was the ice temple one where you’re up in the air. I loved falling back in slow motion shooting arrows at that fucker. I would have completed it the first time if I hadn’t been focusing so much on shooting the thing that I forgot to press glide before hitting the ground. Basically the ending of Aeon Flux short Gravity.

gyac, Monday, 14 October 2024 11:54 (one year ago)

Things I have done since I last posted:
- several shrines
- rode an ice dragon for a while
- acquired two more horses (one is the side quest horse Spot)

Things I have not done:
- upgrade my armour

For whatever reason I decided to start the Call to the depths side quest. It started off fine; I found all four eyes easily and threw them into the chasms.

Now to retrieve them.

So I jumped into the last chasm & found the eye quickly. I knew roughly where I was supposed to be going and what I was looking for (a statue). So I got there without too much hassle, and looked. And looked.

Made my way to the secret spring of recovery which seems like the kind of place you’d find a giant eyeless statue. I placed the statue on the side of the spring while I went swimming around. I got lost. Flashback to being a teenager and taking aptitude tests in school. My guidance counsellor: “Maybe you skipped over the page and filled in the wrong boxes?” No, I told her, I really am that bad. My Achilles heel popped up again.

You might be wondering, why didn’t you look up the location of this statue? And reader, I had. I had the coordinates and I couldn’t find them. Not only could I not find them, when I made my way back to the spring the eye was gone. Who loses an eye? Did someone steal it or did the game simply move it back to where it was? I frantically searched for the missing eye, on land and in water, without realising one final indignity was about to befall me.

I ran out of stamina in the secret spring of recovery and died. That doesn’t seem like something you should be able to do, but I did it.

I hope my sleep is dreamless and i am not haunted by the missing eye 👁️

gyac, Wednesday, 16 October 2024 00:59 (one year ago)

I was referring of course to my spatial ability which has been, in a word, appalling my whole life ^

gyac, Wednesday, 16 October 2024 01:00 (one year ago)

i'd love to read more about how BOTW/TOTK were designed. like, for example- (i think this would be a common experience for players): using a rocket to boost up to a cliff/pathway in the depths, I land exactly where i needed to go before running out of fuel. this sort of thing happens frequently, all over the place. another example would be paragliding and landing on a platform right where you need it to be before your stamina drains

were the pathways/platforms/etc at that height designed first, and the rocket/tools/abilities based around the need for the player to navigate these commonly traversed areas? or did they define the abilities of the rocket/glider/etc first and then design platforms/areas at a ‘rocketable/glideable’ distance ? …OR were the tools/powers and the landscape developed in tandem and adjusted throughout?

i hesitate to say the latter because in my mind that would create a nightmare of exponentially cascading adjustments affecting EVERYTHING in the game, since all the systems are so interconnected and used in so many varied ways. it seems a lot easier to set the parameters for link and the tools/powers first to more easily ensure consistency in the world construction, but that also doesn't leave as much room for creativity or craft, two elements that are clearly abound in the game

i guess what’s truly insane to me is that they *really* did have to develop everything with three dimensions in mind (or four, given the recall power). compared to most games which are 3D, sure, but you are operating largely on a ‘flat’ plane conceptually

global tetrahedron, Thursday, 17 October 2024 21:07 (one year ago)

Gosh I cant say I ever got that experience. I'd always just miss platforms in the sky or come up short on a cliff in the depths. Maybe it depends where you go, I dont know.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 17 October 2024 21:34 (one year ago)

i could see there being some rules in there that help you get places if youre close enough i know its a common practice in video games to sand off rough edges like that, kinda doubt distances between things are measured out in glide lengths since thats upgradable and buffable so it ends up being a ton of different lengths

lag∞n, Thursday, 17 October 2024 21:43 (one year ago)

yeah a lot of the powers seem elastic, like ultrahand distance being (imo) longer in certain shrines for the sake of the puzzle

global tetrahedron, Thursday, 17 October 2024 23:11 (one year ago)

One thing I have always noticed about Nintendo games is it is very very unlikely to get yourself stuck in a way you cant get out of.

i’ve been failing at a supposed exploit where you use recall on a thrown board spear, ultrahand the spear midair and attach it to a plank of wood then use recall on the spear again- supposedly it launches you insanely high. maybe my reflexes arent quick enough, or its been patched out

getting more armor and armor upgrades as well- the set bonuses along with elixir/meal buffs will make for some cool stuff

global tetrahedron, Friday, 18 October 2024 22:01 (one year ago)

I stopped following some of the reddits but I know bombing for speedruns was a thing at least in BOTW, not sureif it got patched in totk. I never really tried any exploits!

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 19 October 2024 00:31 (one year ago)

all that bomb glitching is prob why they eliminated the remote bombs from totk and just said, “you wanna fly so badly, then fly!”

hott ogo (voodoo chili), Saturday, 19 October 2024 00:39 (one year ago)

the more i tried to do it i realized it was a glitch and got less interested, not into cheesing… the game gives you plenty of easy workarounds for basically any situation

i’ve been marking spots where there is a little parade of a boss bokoblin and 4-5 minons marching… great to test weapon platforms on, trying to perfect a bomber plane basically

also discovered a good fuse combo yesterday- cannon sword/spear… if you use the throw button you can target the cannon. before this i didnt find the cannon good for much except blowing myself up, even on a construct head

global tetrahedron, Saturday, 19 October 2024 17:07 (one year ago)

I have been kind of just going around finding and completing shrines and caves and spending a lot of time in the depths. Also riding dragons and chipping various pieces of them off.

gyac, Monday, 28 October 2024 11:02 (one year ago)

I would happily shoot and eat a million meadow animals but I always feel a little guilty about descaling a dragon.

I just started this again - last year I got as far as meeting Purah for the first time (i.e. not very far) and then had a break and forgot everything. Now I’ve restarted it from the beginning (just got to Purah again!) and enjoying it a lot more the second time around. I think I had elevated expectations last time – now I’m treating it more like a BOTW DLC. Before I reached Purah I tried building a lot of shit cars — that was fun. The game should play a sad trombone sound every time you start driving something that falls apart in the first second.

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 29 October 2024 15:28 (one year ago)

The dragon doesn’t even know it’s happening! Their own breath can kill you!

how much "main quest" material is left after the regional phenomena missions? i've got all the geoglyph tear things and just arrived in goron city, my last remaining region. i seem to remember things wrapping up pretty quickly after the divine beasts in BOTW

as a slight aside, the fanboy grouchiness i see over "inconsistent lore" while skimming discussions about TOTK is fascinating. points to nintendo for trying to add some character depth and development, but demanding a deep plot seems to miss the point of nintendo games

two months pass...

ok i'm late to this game but i've been playing it lately

i gave up on doing the tutorial on my own, i'm mostly doing walkthroughs. if i hadn't played breath of the wild, i probably wouldn't have gotten into this game. the build mechanic... i'm getting better at it, but there is a pretty high learning curve, even as someone who loved breath of the wild. i feel like mostly i'm going to rely on the yiga schematics.

it's the pacing that's difficult for me. it takes a long time to unlock convenience stuff like the schematics. that said there's plenty of "run around and pick up bugs" quests. i like that there are more ways to make money. i continue to be bad at combat, so the shrines that are like that isolated island in breath of the wild, i'm not doing great on them. that said i did do all the journalist quests, which includes an underwear fight. all the extra armor... a lot of it i'll probably just sell for cash. with breath of the wild i wanted to upgrade the armor as much as possible, because again, bad at combat, but all the armor in this game, nah. i don't fucking need a Tingle Outfit. currently what i'm doing is looking for as many wells as possible and filling in my compendium as much as possible. i'm just very into those walking sim vibes.

basically what got me picking it up again are the depths. i love exploring tremendous cave systems, and there are both tons of aboveground caves and the enormous depths as well. i also watched a speedrun and found out that one of the boss battles is literally an electrified barbed-wire match in the spirit of Onita's FMW. i am _very_ hyped about that.

i do love the yiga clan in this game. thinking about it, they're basically the hyrule equivalent of ICE. badasses who think they're, like, the punisher, and they're literally just sitting around in the bottom of a well like they're waiting for lassie to save them. it's hilarious.

i like that in both games there's a "gerudo secret club" where gerudo vai (women) can buy voe (men's) clothes. seriously, if you have a society where there's only one man and he's the demon king, stuff like that is just gonna happen. it's not something i'm gonna take _too_ literally, because if you extrapolate it out far enough it becomes clear that such a culture would either not work at all or else one would have to deal with... some very unpleasant topics that imo are outside the scope of a zelda game.

you know what's not outside of the scope of zelda games? femboys! i don't care whether or not link is a _real_ fairy boy; he's spent long enough living with the kokiri that he qualifies if he wants to.

i honestly don't know enough to speak intelligibly about the orientalist trappings of the gerudo, btw. i think there's a very real critique to be made, i'm just not the one to make it. i can say that the gerudo culture doesn't, in my opinion, provide a meaningful critique of patriarchy itself; it's more of an exploration of how characters would react to an implausible and artificial situation (i.e. the only gerudo "voe" - male - is the fucking demon king).

i do like the approach to gendered language among the gerudo. somewhere in the gerudo secret club in tears of the kingdom, the proprietor says something like "in here, we use this word for everyone".

gerudo isn't a true conlang... well, i found this article, but it doesn't address tears of the kingdom:

https://zeldauniverse.net/features/savaaq-a-linguists-take-on-the-gerudo-language/

there's a character named guy who, in tears of the kingdom messes up gerudo by combining english and gerudo greetings - "goodmortta". lyndae, a goron, also talks about having trouble mastering the "v" sound in the gerudo language.

||||||||, Sunday, 12 October 2025 18:54 (three weeks ago)

TBH there are a number of genderqueer (and/or slutty) armor pieces for Link in TOTK, but they're not all necessarily easy to find. (Except the skirt you get at the beginning obv)
