In the margin of moments

earlier today I was playing street fighter 2 turbo on the SNES and listening to the alarmingly hip kitsuné midnight compilation... anyway I was playing as ryu and when I got to zangief cut copy's "future" came on. it's got the refrain "will they meet again one day?"... the fighters were jumping around the screen kicking each others asses completely in time to the music and the lyrics gave it some great in-the-moment retrospective poignancy... I dunno maybe it was the coffee but it felt grrrreat!

...and if the moderators can change the title of this thread to "in the margin of moments" I'd be eternally grateful

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 1 October 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

because I accidentally posted the thread without a title even though it seems to now be called "and"... this is a thread to talk about great video-game moments in your life, however trivial or significant, natural or synthetic... things which made you notice

done.

I thought I had fkd my ps2 which was pretty hairy! I went INSIDE because swap magic got stuck. I was having difficulty sliding the drive open so I had to retrieve it then I shut it and nothing would.

so I went BACK IN except when I was closing up the second time I dropped the lid. in case you didn't know the "ps2 button data cable" is attached to the lid and it fell out! what this is is the little patch cord that tells the little green and red leds to go on and also turns the ps2 on and off. also its feed is located UNDER the dvd tray so I had to unscrew the drive tray, take that out. but I couldn't get that out fully so I had to thread the fkn patch cord back into it's needle-thin slot, negotiating under the drive tray. I put it all back together, back end back on, drive back on, dvd lid back on, ps2 lid back on, slid soul calibur 2 into the drive and the world finally righted itself... haha in the top 5 moments of my year so far! : O

anyway my ps2 is nice and clean inside now, that thing was manky inside

(I didn't really mean this thread for talking about this but what the hell plus I had to tell the story as a warning DON'T GO INSIDE YOUR CONSOLE)

this moment had no margin; it was a full on white-knuckle no margins ride, ALL BODY baby

Having successfully completed a mission in GTA Vice City, I was flying home into a gorgeous orange-pink sunrise, when Crockett's theme came on the radio. At the time I counted this amongst the most memorable moments of my whole LIFE, goddamnit. But I have a rubbish memory so it wasn't competing with much.

Similarly, blasting thru one of the missions on GTA:SA, running thru gunfire and crashing cop cars, jumping into the camaro iroc-z clone and peeling away with the 5-0 close behind, all to the tune of the guitar solo in "Freebird."

The game was just filled with such moments.

Similarly, with most games, anytime you can scream, "oh yeah? well FUCK YOU!" after beating a boss character.

I think getting A's in all the Grand Turismo license tests will be something that'll forever stay with me. jumping up and down on the bed afterwards for about ten minutes.

Yeah and I had a similar Freebird moment too.

great bit last night when I started 'make a star 4' and the lonely rolling star music came on... I'd only ever heard it through the stereo and never in-game... such a different feeling to actually be rolling the katamari around while listening to LRS... I love that song... nice level too... suffice to say I'm in thrall to KD... so great... need to pick up that KD umbrella some time...

three weeks pass...
Nowhere near as scary as cozen's PS2 fiasco above, but still enough to shake me. Today my battered old PS2 finally gave up the ghost and on in inserting game after game produced nothing but disk read errors. After all this Megadrive modding of late, I was feeling fearless and opened the thing up to give the thing a clean out. Took the CD tray out and went at the lens with some rubbing alcohol, put the thing back together and popped a game in.

The thing's as good as new! I don't even have to wait on the "Browser/System Settings" screen before a disc reads anymore. Wahey!

After taking the top off once, I think I'm ready for swap magic + flip top. As soon as I can justify purchasing it, I think I will.

Katamari Damacy is justification.
