Half-Life 2 -- A year later

Well, it's been a full year after TEH BIGGEST GAME EVAR was released. Does it still hold up? Do add-ons like Day of Defeat: Source or the Lost Coast/Aftermath bits help?

One thing's for sure; the game showed how my radeon card didn't like some of the code, and would spit back little specules of iridescent color, which tended to alter the game a bit...

Was FarCry actually good enough to trouble it?

To trouble it, yeah. Not to beat it, mind. But it's very much worth a play.

far cry:instincts on the xbox has a really annoying unskippable intro-training movie which you have to view a. each time you load the game and b. each time you skip out from one mode into another... which is a shame because the game is lovely... really gorgeous and immersive... the first FPS I've bought since goldeneye (though not the first I've played)... better than half-life 2? hmm I dunno...

I discovered Steam installed on my parents' computer... with TEAM FORTRESS CLASSIC. So there's no chance their ATI Rage 128 32 meg card could run HL2 but... TEAM FORTRESS CLASSIC. Too much fun.

I love Half Life 2, and still play the single player game! It's the most fun FPS I've played since Soldier of Fortune, which everyone tells me is rubbish. I think they're mad.

I think it's well understood that I despise these nausea-inducing, drab and darkly-rendered steadicam shootemups.

OTOH, I believe the Steam system was supposed to be some kind of revolutionary mod-community-empowering environment, and I seem to recall having a lot of interest in where it would go. What's the estimation one year on? Has a lot of great content been made available thanks to Steam, or is it still just a DRM headache for people living in fear of broadband downtime? Is this something you guys can get behind, or is it all worth it?
