While I could probably play Animal Crossing forever, what else should I try?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Keeping in mind that I've already beaten Windwaker, of course.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Eternal Darkness
Harvest Moon
Pikmin

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

Mario Kart Double Dash
LoZ: Ocarina of Time/Master Quest (if you can find it)
Metal Gear Solid 2
Simpsons Hit and Run (particularly if you're a fan)

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

I always wanted to try Cubivore.

Allen E. Riley (allenriley), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

4 posts and no RESIDENT EVIL 4? Insanity. Also, Tales of Symphonia is fun in a tedious kind of way.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

Paper Mario 2
Metroid Prime
SMASH BROS

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

YES, RESIDENT EVIL 4.

I thought Metroid Prime was great when I started playing it, but I got inexplicably frustrated and stopped playing around the second boss.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Also:

Mega Man Collection
Sonic Collection

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

I really like Mario Sunshine!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

yeah I like it too but its batshit difficult

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Zelda: Wind Waker! The graphics are twee as baby bunnies in cups, but the gameplay's swift and surprisingly good dialogue/story!

I tried playing RE4, and I sucked. I'm beginning to think that the difficulty curve of new games is leaving me behind.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

That's exactly how I feel, Leee, except that I fear RE4 may be the last intuitive and fun new game that I've played on this generation of consoles.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Really, I foudn the curve on RE4 to be really fair. The thing is you can't plow through it. Find a space to defend and deal with the zombies that way. Or (my fave) shoot them in the knee and then in the back of the head when they fall down!

antexit (antexit), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

Metroid Prime is awesome. Resident Evil 4 can sup heartily of any fluids my testicles decide to produce today.

Bob Loblaw (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Simpsons: Hit and Run is surprisingly great, but at the same time, I kinda stopped around the Apu level. It had become too much of a slog.

RE4 just doesn't sound like my kind of game at all. I've been debating about those Harvest Moon games, though. Ocarina o' Time is clearly brilliant and I might grab a Master Quest. It would probably be worth replaying.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

RE4 and Metroid Prime are my personal faves.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 6 October 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

pikmin

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 6 October 2005 07:10 (twenty years ago)

let me second "Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door," that shit is awesome

also RE4 of course, it doesn't matter if you're not into shooters - I hate Doom & Metroid and all that shit, but trust me, RE4 will completely rock you

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

the first metroid prime is just perfect. it's the best upadate of a classic nintendo franchise since mario 64, some genuinely scary moments like when all the lights go out and you get chased by loads of screaming metroids, really intuitive game play, it's not just bowl around and blast as many aliens as possible. plus it has some properly tough boss fights, something that resi 4 falls down on in my opinion. i'm not a huge fan of first person shooters but this felt like a revelation when i first played. it's telling that the developers of the next halo game are said to be incorporating parts of the engine. the only downside i found was that jumping in first person is a nightmare and there's alot of jumping. though i did read that ninetndo are going to take over for metroid: revolution, and on of there ideas includes a 3rd person camera option for the platform sections.

gamecube really needs some turn based rpgs. tales of symphonia looks beautiful, it's cell shaded (yay!) and apparantly the real-time battle system is really fun. does anyone rate final fantasy crytsal chronicles?

rio natsume, Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I would rate crystal chronicles if they didn't force you to buy gba's for multiplayer. Paper mario 2 is rpg heaven.

jeffrey (johnson), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

rio otm! Metroid prime remains one of the most wonderful games i've played all year. it preserves the scary atmosphere of the original games (which seriously terrified me when I was a kid) and had a ton of really cool exploration. the fights are downright brutal, and I found myself tiring of them after a while, but it's still a fiendishly well-executed game. I wished there were more puzzles. also, it was cool that they delivered a pretty engaging storyline without ever actually inserting any dialogue into the game. the ending didn't really feel like it was worth the extra effort to get 100% though. did you rate metroid prime 2?

Skies of Arcadia Legends is a pretty ok trad console RPG, though maybe it doesn't count since it's a dreamcast game.

Bob Loblaw (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

echoes is aight, the dark world parts were pretty challenging, but it is pretty much the same game so it didn't hit me as hard as the first prime. it's all about the boss fights though, i can't remember a game where it's taken me 4 or 5 goes to beat a boss even after you've worked out the mechanics of how to beat him. omega pirate especially was one of those rare points in a game where frustration becomes fun. word is that shigsy was so blown away by some of the boss fights on both primes that he had to completely rethink the boss fights for twilight princess hence the delayed release date.

rio natsume, Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

yeah alot of people rate skies of arcadia. does anyone rate the phantasy star port?

rio natsume, Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

you're persuading me to go buy metroid prime 2 (I played through a way in prime 1 but got lost and gave it up)... you make it sound great though...

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

i liked the iceworld bits of Prime, and the Marathon-like element of delivering narrative by scanning bits of damaged/ancient alien tech.

heh. i want a "Samus vs the Cult of Cthulhu" title now.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

i think part of the key to appreciating metroid prime is an understanding of why people go so crazy about the original nes game. the original metroid was way before my time, i only ever played super metroid on the nes, but bob's point about the scary atmosphere is spot on. a few of my friends who pretty much bleed halo could never get in to the vastness of metroid prime, they'd start playing, get lost half way through and then just give up. when i started playing it i was reading loads of stuff on the net about the great metroid secret world hunts, where dudes back in the day would just play metroid on the nes for like 10 hours straight looking for secret worlds and glitches and then post what they found on the internet, and this gave me a sort of borrowed nostalgia for what it must have felt like back in like 1986 or whenever to be wandering around this vast, eerie space-scape, completely alone looking for missile expansion packs or whatever. the gc game just flowed so well, there's be like half an hour of this calm, serene wandering, checking out all the beautiful graphics and textures, and then suddenly the scary sino-techno jam would start up and invisible chozo ghosts that you can only track with your x-ray visor attack you. and yeah, they got the story spot on, you don't even have to discover the story if you can't be bothered to scan all the pirate data and chozo artifacts, and even when you do it's still vague because you're getting this story from a. your enemies, and b. a species that doesn't exist anymore. it's basically just a straight conversion of the original game into a huge beautiful looking 3d engine, right down to the ending, which is run of the mill "well done" samus stands on spaceship takes helmet off oh it's a girl!, but it doesn't matter because metroid pretty much invented that shit!

rio natsume, Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

I would have a Gamecube of my own by now if they hadn't let on that the Revolution is going to be 100% backwards compatible with it. Hurry up!

TOMBOT, Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

so true.

another great thing about gamecube, best pad ever!

rio natsume, Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

i mean, i remember when i first played n64 thinking this is the future of gaming, every game system will have a pad like this from now on, but nintendo really went all out with the gamecube pad. sometimes i just lie in bed holding it as i drift off to sleep.

rio natsume, Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

: )

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

the analog joystick reminds me of an erect clitoris

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

erect or engorged?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

My friend just leant me Pikmin (and Super Monkey Ball 2, which is crazy). So far it seems pretty great.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 6 October 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

That post about Metroid is amazing.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 8 October 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

Sixty-one quid!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 8 October 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

rio natsume totally otm about metroids appeal!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 8 October 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

i love the vanished civilizations/ancient ruins/monsters/beautiful landcsapes vibe.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 8 October 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

who has played through zelda: four swords?

I see that GCs are super cheap now...

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 13 October 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

is it worth playing four swords if you don't own a gba?

rio natsume, Thursday, 13 October 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

does the GBA gamecube connector work with DS?

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 13 October 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

I turned on the GC last night and was all psyched to play some Res Evil 4, but OH NO, I had lent it to a friend! So played Super Smash Bros., which is kind of lame when you're playing by yourself.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 October 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

I love mine so much now.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 13 October 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

I love mines but never play it. I think i need Resident Evil 4 and Killer 7. I would play Animal Crossing but i am sure my village will be a simulacrum of hell by now since i haven't played it in abt 7 months.

jeffrey (johnson), Thursday, 13 October 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
"Mine" ws beautiful and shiny silver and is in Montreal - mine now is just ebayed and covered in stains and I had to go to oxford to get an rf cable wtf :(

I am playing Sunshine, it is incredible but yes mad mad hard.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

You are back in London? I have trouble keeping up with your adventures.

I played Pikmin for a while and it seemed good but I really wasn't down with the time limits so I stopped. And went back to Animal Crossing.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
Pikmin is wicked fun and Pikmin II is even better.

Cubivore is definitely worth checking out. It's a really fun and unique fighting game with good strategy elements and lots of adorable and discombobulating moments. I just loaned it to my friend and he got the same pure pleasure from it. After he beat it, though, he felt so bad about eating all the little cube critters that he decided to become a vegitarian.

Abbott (Abbott), Sunday, 26 March 2006 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Pikmin was making me angsty. I had this strong sense that I wasn't doing well enough and would have to start all over again. So I stopped, even though it was a fun game otherwise. Stupid time limits.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 27 March 2006 00:14 (twenty years ago)

out of the blue somewhat, but: Metroid Prime 2 was great in that it seemed to be lots bigger than the first, with better graphics and some absolutely humongously incredible bosses (and that Light Suit is so sexy), but let me iterate that I will never play through that game again. it's pretty dreary.

also, Smash Bros with friends is the most fun. 1st person? pretty dumb and boring. but with friends, oh man

lemin (lemin), Monday, 27 March 2006 03:49 (twenty years ago)

I don't know why I don't have Smash Bros actually. We used to play the N64 one loads!

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Monday, 27 March 2006 08:43 (twenty years ago)

Pikmin II is a lot less dickier about the time limits.

Abbott (Abbott), Monday, 27 March 2006 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Also Super Smash Bros. for the GCN is tops! I played it so much my first year of college...I think I have all of the trophies. It was the only game I had besides Tetris Worlds. Pretty fucking fun and great if you have friends over because it takes approximately .32 seconds to learn, unlike Gladius or other games. Super Monkey Ball has a great game called Monkey Race that has a steeper learning curve, but is also mad fun with friends.

Abbott (Abbott), Monday, 27 March 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

yeah, 3- and 4-way smash bros melee is classic. it has a surprising amount of depth, and is fun for beginners too.

sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Nintendo really should have kept their mouth shut about the Revolution being completely backwards compatible, because otherwise I would probably have gotten myself one of these for xmas.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
^^^^^^

hahaha

Jumpman (account), Sunday, 18 June 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

So Tom, did you hear that the Revolution is completely backwards compatible?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 18 June 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

He wants that Gamecube so bad. I love it.

Jumpman (account), Monday, 19 June 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

otherwise I would probably have gotten myself one of these for xmas.

I have this wonderful image of Tom opening the Gamecube he wrapped himself on Christmas day going apeshit a la "NINTENDO SIXTY FOURRR!!!!"

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Monday, 19 June 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

guys metroid prime is such a perfect game

cankles, Friday, 10 August 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

argh fuck I need more spare time still and also $$$

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

been playing the shit out of luigi's mansion. such a strange game, i cannot believe it was launch title

r1o natsume, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

So, do the old gamecube controllers work on the Wii, or do you have to buy those shiny new white ones I passed up at the store yesterday?

John Justen, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

the old ones totally work. however it took me way too long fiddling around to find a functional channel setting for my wavebird which was pretty annoying.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

This is good news. I guess this means I'll be donating my beat up game cube (sans controllers) to a friend in need.

John Justen, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

too long fiddling around to find a functional channel setting for my wavebird

argh i had this too, it took ages to get the wavebird i bought to work - it was something to do with which of the slots it was connected to? or maybe not. sure wasn't plug n play thats for sure.
during the summer wii drought i played pikmin (excellent, would work even better with wii control system), windwaker (way better than people made it out to be, i liked the sailing), & metroid prime (for some reason i can't get into this).
