This is the answer thread. Talk about yer fave 3D RPGs here:

mine:

KOTOR 1/2
VTM: Bloodlines (shitty code implementation & all)
Anachronox (funny! shitty character models!)

KOTOR et al completely rules.

It's funny, I'd have thought that the crucial difference was between PC-style RPGs (where you can generally pick a role to play (even if it's just fighter/mage/thief) and it influences the story) versus console-style RPGs (where the story is intricate, but completely on-rails from the start, and your choices are all battle-based). These are broad strokes, but they both exist in 2d and 3d. I like both of them, but am beginning to suspect that the bit of my brain that likes the console ones should maybe be smashed in with a rock.

thing is, its not that simple. Kotor is a console RPG, but it's an american one. It's been written about how the first three Ultima games(which were on PC) had massive influence in japan, which is why japanese rpgs went more the battle/stats way.

also, japanese rpgs leaned more on consoles, whereas american rpgs(later ultimas, wasteland->fallouts->PS:T->BG2, etc) leaned on PCs.

Amongst all this, the KOTOR 1 team was comprised of PC alumni from BG2. KOTOR 2 was PC alumni from Fallout 2/Planescape: Torment.

so it's layers within layers n' shit.

People, the graphics are the only thing that matters in video games. Please stick to the topic.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

I only played KOTOR 1/2 on the PC, I sort of forgot that they were available on consoles (though Jade Empire makes your point nicely)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

(pout pout, I made the PC/console point on another thread and no one even noticed)

Where's that Dragon Age shit they were working on? and why hasn't Jade Empire been ported?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Yeah well the other thread starting talking about this (well, about kicking the shit out of the console games) as soon as I posted that, so pout off, man.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

other random observation: Anachronox was a PC game in 3D, yet deliberately was designed to ape your standard japanese rpg.

Final Fantasy 3 DS is apparently going to be totally in 3D! Maybe I will have something to post to this thread. Eventually.

Shining Force Neo for PS2! Oh Noes!!

"The downside is that the main character, Max, sounds a little too much like a "gee willikers" wimp and not enough like the soldier he should be."

Not the cover art I would have chosen, but hey, maybe this is just a mock-up.

kingfish neopolitan sundae (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 24 October 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

The nice thing about cover art for GBA or DS titles is that you never actually have to look at it after you find it and buy it. It's not like consoles where you might be inclined to keep the box around as a container, them shits is nothing but commingled recyclables.

TOMBOT, Monday, 24 October 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

what do you keep your carts in tom?!

c7n (Cozen), Monday, 24 October 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

And what do you put the instructions in?

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 24 October 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)
