Guess what I pulled out last night and played with for half the night?

Yes, The Sega Saturn.

I'd forgotten what an amazing game Nights was, worth it just for the trippy coloured round bosses. But I spent most of the time playing Alien Trilogy. It's got naff graphics, awkward controls, silly switch puzzles but for some reason i couldn't stop playing.

So who else still has one? Talk about your Saturn experiences here.

(ps. sorry about the weak willy gag in my title)

Great thread title. This recently happened for me with Evil Genius. I love killing the workers. Fun.

This is not Saturn BTW. I refuse to give in to your fascism.

alien trilogy is great!

almost as great as alien Vs. predator on the jaguar!

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 7 October 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 7 October 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

sega rally
sega worldwide soccer

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 7 October 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

i played sega rally as well last night, I still believe it has the greatest car control ever.

hated worldwide soccer, the goalkeepers were a joke. Best commentator line ever though - "he's standing around waiting like some lost tourist in a train station". !

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 7 October 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

All the Taito talk led to a bout of emulated Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands. Now I feel twee indeed.

adam (adam), Friday, 7 October 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

i want to play NiGHTS. has anyone played burning rangers? made by the same guy, yuji naka of sonic team, it's like some weird futuristic fire fighting sim. i read an interview with him in nom, where they discuss the "NiGHTS feeling". what is the NiGHTS feeling?

rio natsume, Friday, 7 October 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

Sega Ages Vol. 1 is pretty amazing, it's got arcade perfect ports of Space Harrier, Outrun and Afterburner 2 on it!

To my recollection, the "NiGHTS feeling" is a bit like d-pad thump, but with more pain and blisters.

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

"d-pad thumb"!

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

I think my favourite had to be Panzer Dragoon Saga, the third installment which was more of a role playing venture than a straight out and out blast like the previous two.
I remember playing the level which saw you flying down various tunnels to some spooky music. My stoned mate lay on the couch at the time suddenly perked up after about 20 minutes of watching me lost in these tunnels and said "what is this swimming game you're playing?"

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

OMG BURNING RANGERS

Oh I have to get my Saturn out of the basement NOW.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

I am reading the topic as being FILTHY

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

Ste, have you got Panzer Dragoon Saga? That game is gold-dust.

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

There were so many awesome Saturn games! Gah.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Ste, have you got Panzer Dragoon Saga? That game is gold-dust.

this i didn't know. but i don't think i would sell it ever. i recently had to re-purchase the original first 2 as i regretted getting rid of those.

i also regret having ever gotten rid of my virtua cop 2 game+light gun. i was conned by the shop keep when he bought it from me for about £12 and i noticed he'd put it up for sale at about £25. the big twat.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I am so jealous not only that you have that game, but that you had it not knowing how much people pay for it.

A friend of mine did exactly the same with his Virtua Cop 2 + gun, as well as the rest of his Saturn games. The only one I managed to stop him getting rid of (albeit by accident, it was under my bed) was Sega World Wide Soccer 98. Why couldn't it have been Virtua Cop 2 or Nights?

Another fantastic game for Saturn is Die Hard Arcade, which I don't think was released on any other console. Unfortunately I've only got the CD, as it came in one of my Saturns when I bought it. Can't really complain though, the system was only £2!

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

i just checked it on ebay, people are bidding like eighty quid for this? I must make sure i keep mine in decent condition.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 7 October 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

virtua fighter 2. esp the expert mode that learned all your hack-ish attack patterns (stored on the internal memory) and pwned you!

haitch (haitch), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

I could play some sega rally right about now

czn (cozwn), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 13:31 (seventeen years ago)

I paid £8 for Panzer Dragoon Saga, then left it unplayed in a cupboard for about a year, then sold it for £12, and thought I'd got a good deal out of it. IDIOT.

JimD, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 16:50 (seventeen years ago)

are there any reliable saturn emulators out there?

rio (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

xp yeah I still have mine, including the previous versions.

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 17:52 (seventeen years ago)

rio - I have fooled around some with SSF - it's generally considered the best saturn emulator out there. It's a bit complicated to set up, but there are tutorials on youtube that will teach you how to do it (just search ssf tutorial). Was trying out Sega Rally Championship this morning - some people say it works fine in SSF, but for me it kept crashing at the end of the first race.
