Would look alright if I was a Sega or Atari fanboy.

Sorry Ted, still waiting for the Revolution, also: MAME.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 10 October 2005 04:59 (twenty years ago)

Looks like so far the viability rating is zilch.

Lovely business model, bullshit implementation. Next!!

TOMBOT, Monday, 10 October 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

There's no Q-Bert.
There's no Marble Madness.
There's no reason for me to care about this.

one year passes...
i like the idea of a subscription game service, but it doesn't work with my gamepad and the whole portal program sucks

a.b. (alanbanana), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

but hey sam & max

a.b. (alanbanana), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

Well, it's shown Sega, Atari, and NINTENDO that people WILL pay for old games. Despite how much it sucks, it's probably got a decent number of subscribers.
The Wii will probably get at least one dowload per system the day they're connected. "I wonder how ell this works... hmm Five bucks? sure."

five months pass...
http://angledwhiteboards.com/2007/05/01/may-day/

Oh me, where to begin? May 31 will bring lots of great new titles and features, including a whole new website where you can actually do stuff.

First, you might as well get used to referring to the GameTap you know and love as the Deluxe Player. In the past, we’ve talked about design changes that you saw in the Deluxe Player. Now we get to talk about design changes you’ll see there AND on the web AND in something new, the Lite Player.

We’ve been awfully quiet the past few months, working on a complete website/Deluxe/Lite experience that integrates a ton of features you’ve asked for. Features like user ratings, related games, user profiles and avatars, forums, enhanced search, shared playlists, quick game launch, and more.

On May 31, the tap opens to full blast - all these features (and more), plus free games, retail games via digital distribution, brand new games free for subscribers the very same day they go retail, GameTap TV on the web.

So, today you’ll see plenty of coverage out there talking about free games for people who don’t subscribe. (All you subscribers - another new term - you’re GameTap Gold!) What does that mean for you? How about more challengers in popular free Challenge! games [Metal Slug and King of Fighters series, anyone?], more folks mixing it up in the new forums, and a generally expanded community of like-minded gamers. And only you get unlimited access to all the games in the catalog, whenever, wherever. It’s 24/7.

Launch titles for the free, ad-supported offering will include Metal Slug from SNK Playmore, Taito's Bust-A-Move and Space Invaders, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend from Eidos, as well as Midway titles Joust, Robotron: 2084, and Rampage.

Gametap 3.0 launched today, but it's so buggy right now that I can't figure out how to use the new features.

so why doesn't microsoft buy this shit?

El Tomboto, Thursday, 18 October 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

except maybe that would then cause all of gametaps' licensing deals to implode

Seriously, is anybody doing this? Cause I'm considering.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 05:20 (seventeen years ago)

I use the free version sometimes when I boot into Windows. Mostly it's cool for trying out the occasional B-grade PC game that you never got around to from a few years back, since modern emulators work much better for ROMs and the online play... well, Kaillera was better, which doesn't speak well for the Tap.

If I didn't already own it, Psychonauts definitely would've been worth using GameTap for. I also thought Mr. Robot was okay, though Starscape was a better game (Moonpod's earlier shareware game).

Is it worth how ever many dollars a month it is? I don't know. They do seem to be actually trying, though. I hope it continues, and I hope Good Old Games turns out well, too.

kingfish, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 07:15 (seventeen years ago)

They haven't added much of interest in months (altho yes this will change soon). I'm on the $60/year deal but I don't use it much.

abanana, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 08:56 (seventeen years ago)

Do you get to download and keep the games on your pc or do you have to use them as an intermediary; i.e., do you lose the games when you quit subscription?

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

Pretty much - that's how it works with the free account. It stays downloaded to your hard drive, but you can't run it without permission from the GT client.

MY TED TURNER AS SNAKE WAS GOLD YOU GUYS

Will M., Friday, 8 August 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago)

Ted Turner is a monumentally amazing man. The world would be a better place if he was still in charge of Turner.

Garrett Martin, Friday, 8 August 2008 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

Okay, he looks like snake.
