We Love Katamari: the best game ever made?

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 10 October 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

JET SET WILLY?????????

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 October 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

dean is correct.

haitch (haitch), Monday, 10 October 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

sensible world of soccer (amiga)

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 07:15 (twenty years ago)

no i can't pick one

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 07:47 (twenty years ago)

SimCity 4!

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

JET SET WILLY?????????

yup. nothing in this world will ever - ever! - excite me in the way that buying and playing JSW excited my eight- (or was i nine? i forget) year-old self.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 08:45 (twenty years ago)

Grimly's probably right about the sick, giddy thrill of first playing JSW. But now I'm a grown-up I'll choose GTA:SA.

Don King of the Mountain (noodle vague), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

I have to say, I respect the Jet Set Willy call.

I've been thinking about this all day and I simply can't do it.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

If I could only pick one game to play for the rest of my life, it would be Scrabble on the GBA.
If I had to pick only the best game I've ever played it would be GTA:SA.
If I had to pick the game I've played the most it would be Tetris.
If I were to pick the game I love the most out of all the ones I've played it would be Sensible Soccer.

Greig (treefell), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

I want to say Vice City or San Andreas but I feel that I'm being both predictable and boring. So I really am going to think about this today and base my decision on various factors relevant to the time period. I'll get back to you.

(xpost, i like that angle)

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

Well, using a variety of machines and calculations I have:

"Vice City"

*falls over*

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

(runners up were GTA3, then San Andreas. *world explodes in surprise*)

honoury mention goes to fourth place 'Outzone' for technical achievement and game-most-money-spent-on.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

I am loling thinking about the ending to Final Fantasy Legend! HOW DID THIS FLY IN THE USA?

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

Pro Evo 4

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

Final Fantasy Legend (at the end you kill GOD!)

HOW DID THIS FLY IN THE USA?

"
Final Fantasy Tactics is the most viciously anti-Catholic game that I have personally ever played (warning: spoilers ahead).

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Mega Man 2.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

GTA:SA

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

probably Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time...

or WCW/NWO Revenge

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Master of Orion.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

probably Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time...

This was a contender for me but what let it down was the lack of replay factor. I haven't played it since I first completed it.

But it was gloriously glorious at the time.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Civ 2.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

I nearly went with Civ 3 but I can't work out if I hate it or not yet.

Don King of the Mountain (noodle vague), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

But now I'm a grown-up I'll choose GTA:SA.

see, my problem with SA is that i'm not very good at it i just haven't played as much of it as i'd like. perhaps i should go and do so now, actually. yeh, why the fuck not? ah: because mrs fiendish wants me to make the dinner. fuck.

but i'm not much of a gamer these days: my heart belongs firmly in the eight-bit era. which is why i'm going to add alter ego at #2 and deus ex machina (just for the sheer conceit of it; i know the game itself wasn't great) at #3 on the grimly all-time list of teh toppness.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Mega Man 2, Mario 3 and Contra are my holy trinity of 8 bit scrollers. Maybe Zelda 2 also. Zelda 2 is massively underrated!

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Championship Manager 2

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

I am suddenly tempted to change my mind to the Gameboy Speedy Gonzalez ROM I downloaded last night.

nabiscothingy, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

(I always think of Jet Set Radio as my "favourite" videogame but CM2 I have shrugged on so many times like an old sweater, warm and perfect and right)

(if it counted I would pick online go)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Fuck it: Killer7.

disco violence (disco violence), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

(at least for atmosphere, storyline, music, and everything else besides gameplay, which is rudimentary and almost besides the point.)

(And I'm gonna buy Fallout/Fallout 2 again soon so that's my runner-up.)

disco violence (disco violence), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

super metroid

älänbänänä (alanbanana), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

as a kid, but possibly all time: chrono trigger.

as of now: probably metal gear solid 2.

fallout 2 and gradius V get honorable mentions.

Will M. (Will M.), Thursday, 13 October 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

Sod Ecco (I never thought I'd say this), my original pick for this thread was Outrun, but I hesitated because I'd never finished it before. Having just done this, and proven that it's possible, I'll pick it now.

I love the idea of the game being called Outrun, but never telling you what you're running from or where you're going. I like to assume the start and goal lines are metaphors, or just part of some drug crazed psychos-running-from-the-law delusion.

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
Sensible World Of Soccer - I have started playing it again for first time in a few years but only really so I can play online (of course the big SWOS forum went down as soon as i finally got this running on WinUAE).
