From t'other thread:

How and/or where did you get this WoW trial Trayce? I want one.

A friend who has the game gave me a slip with a 10 day trial serial on it. I think it comes with each bought copy? DIsconcerting that you still have to sign up with a credit card and name and address and all that :/ But apparently it wont charge me unless I now go out and buy a proper gane and sign up fully. Which, to be honest, I'm wavering on doing at this stage. Sims 2 nightlife just came out, I shall be distracted ;)

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

ONE OF US ONE OF US

My priest is now lvl 22. If you combined all of the levels of the various characters I've started on assorted servers into one character, I would be at lvl 159. (Conversely, adding up the xp would probably put me at lvl 55, ha.)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 September 2005 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone who wants to jump in on some good-natured PvP action with me should roll up an Alliance character on Deathwing and msg Teufelstod or Grinz.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 September 2005 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

What servers do Australians play on, the West Coast US ones, or is there an English asian server?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 September 2005 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

i had a 10 day trial but it ran out and i'm all WoWless now. sadness.

when i'm able to get a proper account i'm going to be hitting everyone up for newb WoW tips...

Juulia (julesbdules), Monday, 19 September 2005 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

Who all is actually playing (besides me and Andrew)?

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 September 2005 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

There isnt anything but a US server AFAIK!

Sorry I'm not playing it at this stage... im having some IRRITATING problems with a half-broken cd rom drive and a copy of sims2 nightlife that thinks its sims2 university and is being an arse :(

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 19 September 2005 22:57 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't played with regularity since May or so. I lost interest, and now I sorta feel too left behind to get back into it? I don't think any of my friends play anymore either, except for this one dude in an SA guild.

sux2bu (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 02:08 (nineteen years ago)

Haha I'm not even playing any more. I cancelled my account, so that I'd actually get anything done about moving to London. Then I got laid off in work before I could quit, which means more money and time than I'd planned on. So the first thing I did was think "Hey, my cancellation doesn't take effect for four days!". I did little else for the next four days, which was fun but doesn't make me want to renew my account until I'm settled in to new flat + new job in London.

Actually being on when your time runs out is strange, they give you warnings starting from 30 minutes out up to 1 minute 45, 1 minute 30, 1 minute 15, 1 minute... And then nothing happens. You can play for as long as you want, provided you don't log out :) I spent the time bagging Broken Tooth as a pet (attack speed 1.0!).

jeffrey (johnson), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

I played WoW for a minute. When I hit level 30 I realized that I'd spent the past month (November/December) with the window open (cold!) so I could smoke, drinking beer after beer immobile in front of my Powerbook arguing with strangers over loot in the Deadmines. I kind of miss it.

three weeks pass...
UPDATE: I hit level 48 last night after a month of desultory grinding! Also this past week I discovered the Arathi Basin battleground!!!! SO MUCH MORE FUN THAN THE REST OF THE GAME!!!!!! Plus getting 2250XP per game if you win = nice; that's what actually ended up levelling me through the latter half of 47 as all of the upper-40s quests are bitches to solo, esp as a warrior.

I haven't looked at Warsong Gulch at all; just from the description I get the sense that it would totally suck to be a warrior there.

NEW UPDATE: I hit lvl 49 last night and I've got rested bonus all the way up to 50! WOOT.

8 days of infrequent playing to level. I can do better than that.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 October 2005 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

Re: the previous post; apparently I can't do better than that as 4 days later I'm barely halfway to 50. Oh well, got some good battleground time in, winning 5 out of 6 Arathi Basin games last night!

Is no one interested in the expansion pack? This feels like Dan's World of Warcraft blog, heh.

First off, THAT IS THE GREATEST PICTURE KNOWN TO MAN. The vaguely disquieted looks of the people in line!

Secondly, both of my coworkers who play are torked off by the new level cap. Personally, I'm glad that I spent all of my time fucking around with lvl-20something toons and didn't bother grinding to 60 and then blowing weeks on getting epic gear.

Dan ("Gnome, huh?") Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 October 2005 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

Bear in mind this is due for Holidays 2006. Getting torked off about something a year away seems dumb.

Also that is the greatest picture known to man.

Some people were suggesting that the new Alliance race will be Centaurs/Dryads, and some people were suggest this was a dumb idea, because what would they do for mounts? I think this is a brilliant idea, if instead of mounts they get rollerskates.

Alliance get their heads handed to them in any Arathi Basin game that I've seen, unless 4 or 5 of the horde just don't turn up. I suspect this is because population imbalance means that any horde who wants to play BG all day can do that. Or maybe all these 12-year-olds aren't the untapped strategic resource that they appear.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

On my server, it's all completely dependany on who's online; there is a core of lvl 40-49 Alliance who are very good at AB... and a whole bunch who think that zerging from base to base racking up PVP kills but not actually taking any resources is a good strategy. I call those people "dumbasses". The days when I stumble into a battleground with 3 people who get what the game is about and 11 "dumbasses" are sad, bad days.

Some people were suggesting that the new Alliance race will be Centaurs/Dryads, and some people were suggest this was a dumb idea, because what would they do for mounts? I think this is a brilliant idea, if instead of mounts they get rollerskates.

That is totally, absolutely brilliant.

LVL 50 WOOT

Any tips on where I should try to farm some decent gear (particularly plate armor and two-handed swords)?

Dan (Seargent Teufelstod) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

Also the lvl 60 Horde who camp the low 50s grinding/quest areas in the Western Plaguelands SUCK.

Dan (Gankenstein) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

Hahaha if I continue to grind the way I have been, I will hit 60 before Thanksgiving!

Dan (Grinding Is The Key) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 November 2005 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

Eh. Having just ground around Tanaris looking for Scorpid Scales for that bloody Tough Scorpid set, I'm ready to go back to questing (IE a vague pretense for grinding)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 4 November 2005 02:20 (nineteen years ago)

In other interesting nerd news, you can now leverage the kernel stealthing capabilities of the Sony/Columbia DRM rootkit (available on recent compact discs released by Sony labels) to disguise your WoW Haxxx from the Blizzard not-so-stealth anti-cheating spyware agent. fat fat fat fat Usher (DJP), Monday, 11 April 2011 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

after playing more Cata i've turned around on it a little bit; in my post up there I was playing on an Ally server briefly but now I'm back where I belong (horde) and I think the new old world Horde content is a lot better. the new silverpine questline is amazing and so is the goblin starting area (my problem with the goblin & worgen areas is that there appears to be no room for variation if you play them more than once). i like the new quest distribution, where you just get a few at a time, but it's jarring when you hit BC again and each zone has 30 quests for you to pick up at once - BC is completely untouched

new skill/talent system sucks and makes it easier for me to understand why people are leaving en masse for Rift... i'm tempted to try it out myself since all my old guildies are consumed by it and as a result nobody can get raids together anymore.

cum dude (Princess TamTam), Monday, 11 April 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

I got about halfway through the goblin quest line and it's pretty excellent; certainly less angsty than the worgen quest line (although I love my wolfman druid)

do not wake the dragon (DJP), Monday, 24 October 2011 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

and also tbh just read about the new talent system and i think it sounds way better---as someone who only played casually and had neither the time nor the inclination to research the "right" way to build a given character, it's nice that they've streamlined that process

(basically, since a lot of players with a given class/specialization were learning identical talent trees, because that was the "best way" to play that class/spec, they shifted most of those talents over to abilities that you automatically learn as you progress through the game as that class/spec. what's left over are talents that are more about personal playing style. seeing as how i got chewed out for not playing my own character "correctly" in a couple dungeons, it'd be nice to have some of that taken out of my hands. but maybe the nerds will be pissed about this training wheels approach, w/e)

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Monday, 24 October 2011 16:05 (thirteen years ago)

Blizzard seem to be really enjoying the opportunity to push out end-game content - after they turned the entire lvl 1-60 world over last time and people went "meh", they're pretty loud about being able to put everything where most people will see it.

Anyone play? This is my third time in a decade of trialing a month, giving wow classic a go. I have always enjoyed the month, but then the tug of life gets a hold of me and I realise I don't have it in me to commit the time this game demands. Maybe playing for a month every three or so years is what I am made for?

Come play w/ me, I'm on the US servers I think?

hrep (H.P), Sunday, 13 February 2022 23:15 (three years ago)

I did a month about a year ago and it was a blast - just tore through 10 years of expansions & got basically up to date (I bought Shadowlands iirc). I don't have the time now & I think there wouldn't be the same rush of novelty tearing through zone after zone & fiddling with garrisons, order halls etc (oh and op blasting thru instances solo). But I'd certainly do another month if I did have more free time - it was so relaxing or comforting finding the rhythm of it again.
