what kind of bits and pieces make up your PC?
self built or off the shelf?
what's your next upgrade?
AGP or PCI express?

all that kinda stuff goes HERE

my PC is self-built with an i-cute case, lots of blue LED case fans.
Athlon 2600xp processor
SB Live soundcard
1 gig memory
MSI nvidia 6800GT gfx card
MSI motherboard (AGP)

it's a fairly decent rig, but dated by today's standards. not even got a 64bit chip. i guess my next upgrade will be new mobo and CPU, but it's annoying because i have an AGP gfx card, so would need an oldskool AGP mobo. bah!
it runs all the newer games fairly well, due to the graphics card, i guess. but i fear i've overclocked the hell out of my processor and it's going to die an early death.

so... what's in your rig?

two macs and a PS2. keeping it simple :)

couldn't have put it better myself.
keep your mac-infected bytes off my thread!

xpost!

Mine's not far off yours Greg! The ram and video card always let me down though.

Athlon 2800xp
Soundblaster PCI 128 (bah! Not quite a Live)
512 meg ram
ATI Radeon 9600se (this is shite, but slightly better than the Geforce 5200 I had in there before)
MSI motherboard AGP!

It's self built, but in a nasty nokia-esque case which only cost about £20. Will overheat daily, or make troubling noises.

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 13:12 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, bottlenecks suck. CPU is mine, for sure.
i built my brother's computer over a year ago, a 3200xp system, and gave him 512mb ram, saying "you need to get another 512mb of ram asap, as it's gonna be a big bottleneck. you'll really notice the difference." he never did it!

5200 is an EVUL pile of shit. well done for canning it. my old ti4200 pissed all over it, performance-wise. i'll never understand that.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 13:19 (eighteen years ago) link

well it's been a long time since i changed anything inside the box, apart from the CD writer.

lets see if i can remember, it was all built by myself back in the day:
processor - AMD 850
graphics - nvidia erm, geforce 2 i think
soundblaster 64
128mb ram
30gb hard drive
AGP motherboard
Win98/SuSe linux 9.3

clearly not a games machine anymore.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 13:23 (eighteen years ago) link

64bit Athlon 3700+
1 Gig RAM
x700Pro gfx
Audigy sound card (and far too many fucking speakers)
200GB disk drive
WinXP SP2

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 13:28 (eighteen years ago) link

ooh, leetness!

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 13:32 (eighteen years ago) link

mine's up there with ste's although i do have about 400G of disk in it. i also have and 'EVUL piece of shit' 5200, bought because it was fanless and the fan was what caused the previous one to fail. and 128M ram! the video card and my usb memory stick are both 128M but i've never bothered to upgrade the ram in my pc... (and pointless now because i need new everything else)

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 15:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Athlon 2400XP
Radeon 9800Pro
1.5GB RAM
Nforce 2 Soundstorm
5.1

I need a new everything.

My machine is almost 2.5 years old:

(from the order confirmation email on 19 June 2003 from MagicMicro.com)
Intel P4 Barebone Black Neon #6 (533 FSB, DDR333, 8x AGP & more)
* Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHz (478-Pin) 512k, 533 BUS
* EuMax Socket 478 Intel P4 fan
* ECS L4S8A2 P4(478) DDR333, 8xAGP, Sound, Lan, ATA133, USB 2.0, IEEE
* 512Mb PC 2700 DDR333
* ATI Radeon 9500Pro 128MB DDR 8X AGP dual head, tv out
* AC 97 32 BIT Full Duplex sound card (onboard)
* 10/100 Network card adapter (onboard)
* EverCase Mid Tower ATX Case 300W w/ Front USB Black
* Case Fan 80 mm DC fan

This was $608 back then(plus $33 shipping).

-2 60 Gig HDs, 1 with an added 20 Gig Ubuntu Linux partition
-The Logitech 2.1 speaker set up. Sounds just great for what i need it.
-I've since added another 512Mb thing of Ram.

Everything will be fine for another year or more, excent that i'll need a bigger HD and a new graphics card. Maybe someday when i'm not actually losing money. Oh, and I should probably get a DVD drive one of these years.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:26 (eighteen years ago) link

ooh that'd be useful if i ever decide to start gaming on my PC again.

athlon 64 3000+ or 3200+, can't remember
512 RAM
Radeon 7000 AGP (didn't even make the list!)
the cheapest soundcard i could find that had a toslink optical out because i actually have a good stereo system
vintage 1999 Gateway 15" monitor capable of 1280x768 interlaced only!! (i run it at 1024 b/c i don't like headaches)
self-built

few hundred bucks for a good video card, better monitor, and double the RAM and it would be a decent machine, i reckon

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:29 (eighteen years ago) link

pentium 3 celeron 550 MHz
160 MB RAM
2.5 MB video card that came with the computer
decent speakers
a playstation controller connected to usb port
emulators and roms

älänbänänä (alanbanana), Thursday, 13 October 2005 01:22 (eighteen years ago) link

I must have the magic graphics card or something, it's only a Ti4200 but it's played everything I've ever thrown at it (Doom 3, Half Life 2, etc) beautifully, except for Battlefield 1942, and even that I'm not sure if it was the graphics card or just the slowness of xp2000+ CPU. The fact that my old shitty graphics card does so well has convinced me that most graphics card fetishists are fucking idiots who are wasting their time and money.

I've got 1.5 GB RAM
440 GB hard drive space (80 of which is prob. on its last legs)
Epox 8RDA3+ mobo

The next thing I'm going to do is get a xp3000+ or 3200+ because I have fast RAM and it pains me to run the FSB at 133mhz when I could have it at 400mhz.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 13 October 2005 01:54 (eighteen years ago) link

cool thing is that Call of Duty 2 has a setting that forces DirectX 7, which kills off the extra-shiny prettiness and doubles the framerate, without much appreciable drop in visual quality.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 13 October 2005 03:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Dan I.

Just overclock the FSB and lower the multiplier.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 17 October 2005 18:30 (eighteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
Athlon 64 939 3500+
2.0 GB Corsair RAM
MSI 7800 GTX 256MB
250GB SATA16 HDD

Remember, dont buy some POS from DELL etc. Build your own rig.
Mine only cost me aound $1,400AU 2 months ago and it ROCKS!

Chocolate Thunder, Thursday, 3 November 2005 12:46 (eighteen years ago) link

so i just bought a new one here is mine now:

Intel Pentium 4 Processor 630
3.0GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2Mb Cache
1024Mb DDR RAM
250Gb SATA Hard Disk Drive
256Mb ATI Radeon iterX550HM Graphics

that graphics card look pointless though, what's a decent 3d one?

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 4 November 2005 14:10 (eighteen years ago) link

AGP or PCI-E?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Sunday, 6 November 2005 12:31 (eighteen years ago) link

AGP

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 6 November 2005 22:45 (eighteen years ago) link

anything 6800 or above (nvidia) will handle anything you can throw at it. bit pricey though.
for something not so high-end (but a little cheaper) try an nvidia 5900xt or ATI 9800pro.

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 7 November 2005 13:18 (eighteen years ago) link

cheers dude

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 7 November 2005 13:35 (eighteen years ago) link

it's just there dude ^

The graphics card is actually pretty smart, my 3D games are running like shit off a shovel so that's something.

Ste (Fuzzy), Saturday, 12 November 2005 12:34 (eighteen years ago) link

oh yeah, i forgotted. DUH.

now go get CS:Sauce so you can roffle around with leet [ILX] tags. and then i can shoot you.

g-kit (g-kit), Saturday, 12 November 2005 12:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I have a question that i guess could fit pretty easily in here rather than wasting a new thread on it. I am absolutely terrified about the inner workings of electronical devices but i would really like more ram and a new graphics card. I really don't want to have to take it into a shop because of labour costs and time+hassle plus all of my Hax0red software. So anyway, how easy is it to install either of those things?

I have read up on other sites and ram seems particularly easy, simply a case of slotting it into place but i am very untrustworthy of other interweb places plus having the inside of a pc paranoia.

jeffrey (johnson), Saturday, 12 November 2005 19:03 (eighteen years ago) link

new machine, AGP, doh

It's easy, if you know what you're doing, the hard part is knowing what you need to buy.

What do you have currently, and what do you want to buy?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Sunday, 13 November 2005 01:58 (eighteen years ago) link

I currently have 512, i have 4 slots and 2 have 256 each in them. I am pretty sure it is DDR ram but forget how to confirm this.

My graphics card is a 9200SE 128MB Radeon, it is kind of the pits as far as 128 MB pc's go. I would like 1024 MB ram but am open to more and just any graphics card that can hadnle modern games, i don't really play fps at all which i know is the most graphical instensive but i'd still like something decent. Ram is a much higher priority though. The rest of my pc is this:

3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4
Fujitsu Siemens D1625 motherboard (i think that's the motherboard)
Soundmax Digital Audio Soundcard
75 GB hard drive

jeffrey (johnson), Sunday, 13 November 2005 02:53 (eighteen years ago) link

I would look for a secondhand AGP Radeon 9800 Pro and use Crucial.com to find the right ram for your mobo i think a single 512 PC3200 stick is probably the best idea.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Sunday, 13 November 2005 21:49 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, also, dink around on places like TomsHardware or some of the relevant SH/SC threads if you have a SA forums account. That's where I learned much about this stuff.

kingfish cold slither (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 13 November 2005 22:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Toms Hardware is a bunch of toss.

Arstechnica and it's forums are a goldmine of helpful knowledgeable people.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Sunday, 13 November 2005 23:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Everst analysis software things says this about my ram:

Memory Type DDR SDRAM
Memory Speed PC2700 (166 MHz)

I tried Crucial.Org and they have no idea what the hell my fujitsu-siemens pc is. So basically i get 512 DDR PC2700 or can i get the 3200? My chipset is the intel i865PE if that makes a difference. I tried looking at all my fujitsu-siemens documents and websites but they are pretty damn useless to be honest.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 14 November 2005 04:23 (eighteen years ago) link

i wouldn't risk the 3200, just get the same type as you have already or you'll get a lot of bluescreen action.
fitting memory and gfx card is absolutely pish, you should have no trouble in that department.

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 14 November 2005 09:08 (eighteen years ago) link

I am going to get ram and try this tommorow. i hope i don't blow my pc up.

jeffrey (johnson), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 05:52 (eighteen years ago) link

1.5GHz of RAM. So much easier than i thought, so so much. Didn't even need to unscrew, my pc has some sort of flip-top lid. I am the king of the flip-top. New graphics card will happen soon if it is as easy as this.

Flip-Top Farrell (johnson), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:57 (eighteen years ago) link

i am going to build this over xmas:

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Venice 90nm (Socket 939)
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum nForce3 Ultra (Socket 939) Motherboard
OcUK Value 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 184pin DDR Memory
CoolerMaster Ammo 533 Aluminum (No PSU) - Silver
Akasa Ultra Quiet 400W Paxpower PSU

Total £515.36

i already have 120gb HDD and DVD drive, and i'll rip out my 6800GT and put it in this new machine. should be quite nippy!

Sailor Kitten (g-kit), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:40 (eighteen years ago) link

wow! bargain

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 13:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I want a new pc, and would build my own, but i'm a bit wary of the whole motherboard/cpu installation part. Adding drives and cards is easy enough, but the thought of ruining the cpu by bending the pins...

Greig (treefell), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:34 (eighteen years ago) link

you have to be a total hamfist to bend the pins.
you're far more likely to crack the core when putting the heatsink on.

Sailor Kitten (g-kit), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:55 (eighteen years ago) link

oh good another thing to make me paranoid about :)

Greig (treefell), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:07 (eighteen years ago) link

hehehe

they're pretty hardy, tbh. i am a complete lamefist with a heatsink and have applied what i would consider to be FAR too much pressure to a number of processors and i've never broken one yet!

Sailor Kitten (g-kit), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Just check all the places online about building your own rig. I think I've mentioned some introductory articles at TomsHardware, but there's plenty others.

Also, all mobos now have ZIF sockets, which have the little lever thingee:

http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/ProcessorSocket370.jpg

You raise the lever, gently place the CPU, and then lower it back. Easy.

Tho I do remember bending the pins trying to upgrade my 1993 vintage PC to a 486-66 some years back.

kingfish hobo juckie (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:41 (eighteen years ago) link

that's understandable though.

Sailor Kitten (g-kit), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Great specs, but can you find an nforce4 mobo? They've been out for a while now and I believe they benchmark quite well. I've been very happy with my giga-byte board. Also, I'm unsure you'll see much improvement over 1GB RAM.

the ghost of olde ilx, Tuesday, 29 November 2005 20:44 (eighteen years ago) link

i've changed my mobo plan. since i have an AGP card still, and a fairly decent one at that, i'm gonna get an Asrock dual 939 board - it has an AGP slot for my current card, AND a pci-e slot for when i upgrade! i thought that was the best idea EVER.

and 2Gb SOUNDS good. duh.

Sailor Kitten (g-kit), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 10:00 (eighteen years ago) link

omg my memory is arrived. i have 2gb of superfast OCZ Platinum memory. all i needs now is the rest of the computer, harr!

Sailor Kitten (g-kit), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 16:20 (eighteen years ago) link

eighteen years pass...

i bought myself a starter pc to mess around with, upgrade, play a few older games on

first thing i did - took fans out and a good clean all around

second thing i did- cleaned off old thermal paste and reapplied

now it doesnt switch on

i am reminding myself that this is exactly what i bought it for and that it was a piece of junk anyway

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Friday, 16 February 2024 16:25 (four months ago) link

it now switches on intermittently and sometimes even has a video output
