Which is the bigger constraint on your gaming: money or time?

Certainly both factors come into play for most people, but which is the bigger problem for you? At times (see: my birthday) I've had a stack of games and no time to play them, but way way way more often, I simply don't have the money to pour into all the games I want and must ration them to myself.

I think this may relate a lot to stage of life/career etc. but I'm curious.

time, easily.

I'm money by a long shot.

Trade ya!

Time, for sure. I can def. afford games at this point, but I never finished KOTOR, Metroid Prime, or Halo 2 because of time. I have to be reaaaallly into a game to play it all the way through.

In fact, I wish they made more games that you can do in a short amount of time but has infinite replay value (say, Dr. Mario) vs. 25 hour epics. Maybe my problem is that I don't play sports games.

Money.

Time. And I have a lot of free time compared to most people (kids at school, me at home during the day). But I don't feel as inclined to pish the whole of my life away playing as I used to. With the amount of abandonware available and the open-ended games I own like Civ 3 and *cough* EA Cricket, I don't think money's much of a problem.

Oddly enough, money. This is primarily because I'm cheap and I refuse to pay more than $25 for a game these days.

used games, dude. totally.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I know. The used games I want usually hover at the $35 mark for about a year; I'm just now considering picking up Halo 2.

$$$

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Money 100%. No matter how little free time I have, as long as I fill the same percentage of it with playing games it seems as if I'm playing the same amount, if you know what I mean. I don't necessarily have marathon sessions of games either, so that's not a problem. Perhaps this is why Ico seemed like a long game to me.

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Actually, the biggest problem for me is location. My PS2 is being used as the house DVD player, and we're trying to share TV time. If I decided to be selfish I could pull it into my room, but then I might not be able to use the projector to play games and that would be tragic.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm not really sure anymore - at college I had three years of it being time totally brutally and constrainingly, I don't think I finished a single game in the whole time I was there or managed to play anything more than eight hours a week but now life is opening up, I might get a crummy job and just play videogames until I don't want to anymore, sweet.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Mostly it's time, strangely since this board has started I've managed to 'find' a lot more gaming time.

But like Dan I too hesitate on spending all my hard earn wage on expensive games, so sometimes money does come into it.

Which is the bigger constraint on your gaming: money, time, or trying not to annoy your girlfriend by spending all evening in front of the tv, producing the sounds of gunfire and annoying music?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but Jordan, aren't you engaged to a gamer chick?

Those who said 'money' should click here.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 13 October 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

Money. Technically, if I had lots of money then time wouldn't be a problem.

Navek Rednam (Navek Rednam), Friday, 14 October 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but Jordan, aren't you engaged to a gamer chick?

She likes games (for ex. Harvest Moon, DDR, Kindom of Loathing, the Sims, O.G. Mario, and Below the Root) and likes gaming in the abstract, but that doesn't necessarily mean she wants to hear "Leeeon! Leon, help! Leeeeon!" for a week while I sit on the couch.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 October 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

time, definitely.

haitch (haitch), Saturday, 15 October 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

Time, no question.

ENERGY. i'm actually too lazy to play games most of the time!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 15 October 2005 08:56 (twenty years ago)

time, by miles.

g-kit (g-kit), Saturday, 15 October 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

Actually, latebloomer OTM. Sometimes I sit down to play something and look through my games to find something I want to play and think "actually sod this, I can't be bothered". I'm not sure if it's too much choice, too little choice or just general laziness.

melton mowbray (adr), Saturday, 15 October 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

I don't know what Below the Root is, but I sense I should trust your girlfriend's taste in games.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 16 October 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

Chris: http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=113 (I have always planned to play this and failed to get round to it, people should tell me about this game)
