rio natsume, Sunday, 18 September 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

oh and championship manager and simcity of course.

rio natsume, Sunday, 18 September 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

All those Lucasarts adventures have got to be at the top of the list really. Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Sam and Max et al. If we're on dos first person shooters, Duke Nukem 3D can't go without a mention, and Rise of the Triad. Civilisation, Worms, Cannon Fodder (I don't really know what I'm listing or where this is going).

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 18 September 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

yeah sorry, i'd try and give it more of a focus but like i said, i know little about pc games. maybe this should just be a search & destroy.

rio natsume, Sunday, 18 September 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

hmm. off the top of me head:

-Fall-out 1 & 2
-Ultima 4-7
-Half-Life
-Wing Commander 1 & 2
-Doom
-Quake 1-3
-M.u.l.e.
-X-wing/Tie Fighter series
-All LucasArts : Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max Hit the Road, Full Throttle, Monkey Island 1 & 2, Indiana Jones & the Fall of Atlantis, Loom, etc
-Grim Fandango (gets its own mention)
-Sim City series
-Myst
-Daikatana (for sheer hubristic fizzle)

Recent possible inductions:

-Half-Life 2
-Pscyhonauts (does this count?)
-Sims

Should we include any MMORPGs?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Oh! Grand Theft Auto, obviously! Off the top of my head I can't really think of many PC driving games - all the ones I had, I bought for the violence (GTA, Carmageddon, Death Rally).

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 18 September 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

civilization HAS to be in there. near the top even.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 18 September 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

also the early sierra "quest" games.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 18 September 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

was it weird that sierra used to be called "sierra on-line" before almost anybody was on-line?

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 18 September 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

WING COMMANDER
Ballblazer
Escape from Fractalus

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

why are the lucasarts games considered classic? are they as playable as traditional console type games from the same era? did they offer something in the way of gameplay that was unique and new, something more mature and meaningful? i remember monkey island had beautiful graphics for its time.

tell me about mmorpgs and sierra.

rio natsume, Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Lucasarts made the canon. Every game was immersive, beautiful, intelligent, well-scripted, funny and terribly playable. They hold up well too.
See also: Psychonauts.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that reminds me.

okay, here:

This is the thread for LucasArts alumni: (DoubleFine, Telltale, Psychonauts, etc)

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

dialogue, characters, and art design were Lucasarts' strongest traits. I don't think they really had a strong narrative until Full Throttle or Grim Fandango.

Also, Lucasarts voice-acting tended to be so far beyond what anyone has ever done. I think the only thing sierra had with the same quality was the Gabriel Knight series(but I haven't played GK2 or 3, so i can't say for sure).

But yeah, Grim Fandango stands as pretty much one of the greatest video games ever made.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

also, i'm trying to remember how much of Lucasarts fell into the early/mid-90s pitfall of live-action FMV.

You had the Rebel Assault games, of course, but with the cutscenes in Full Throttle or Grim Fandango, those were animated.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

is there a version of grim fandango for the mac?

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

not really, but you can pull it off with a little tweaking:

http://timmargh.net/2005/01/grim_fandango.php

Actually Grim Fandango is playable on a mac. After looking at many sites reading about the unfinished residuel, i was all like screw this im not waiting for that. Everyone says that virtual pC and windows XP pro will not work because it'll be too slow
So i got Virtual PC 7 and WINDOWS 98.
Installed the game, it ran perfectly. G3 ibook. Only sometimes sounds didnt sync up, but who gives a shit.
Enjoy.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

virtual pc, huh... maybe i'll wait for some kind of emulation as i don't wanna install that AND windows!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

oh neat, i found this too:

http://emusician.com/mag/emusic_adventures_composer_creating/

the game's composer talks about creating the soundtrack to Grim Fandango

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

maybe i'll wait for some kind of emulation as i don't wanna install that AND windows!

so far, that's all i've seen. if your system can handle it, i'd say go for it. It's worth it.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Civ 2, Worms 2, Ski Free.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Lemmings

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

I was wondering when Ski Free was going to show up! Command and Conquer belongs in here, esp. "Red Alert".

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 18 September 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

Farscape
Planescape: Torment
Outcast
World of Warcraft
Morrowind
Max Payne?

Grand Theft Auto is a console game.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

Planescape torment and fallout 2 are the most joyful times i've ever had with a computer.

jeffrey (johnson), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

I would totally pick warcraft out of that era. the little dudes saying things when you clicked on them took a long time to get old. my husband and I still occasionally say "You're the captain!" to each other.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Master of Orion 1 & 2
Heroes of Might & Magic series
Archon

Jeremy (Jeremy), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

Taking sides: "Work, work" vs "Zug Zug"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 September 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Zug Zug. Definitely.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

IF anyone wants to know how to play old Lucas Arts games on Mac, search out "ScummVM". If you look on the right torrent sites, you can get it packed with every LucasArts Scumm game. Also, pretty much any DOS game runs in "DosBox".

~~~~ DODONGO DISLIKES SMOKE ~~~~ (ex machina), Monday, 19 September 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)
MINESWEEPER. Let's face it it's the most played PC game ever and it's really good.
I downloaded Loom for an Atari ST emulator and am waiting to line up a free weekend day when I can wallow with Bobbin Threadbare in undisturbed nostalgia.
Tom (Groke), Monday, 19 September 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)
"Grand Theft Auto is a console game."
You have much to learn.
Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 19 September 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)
Star Control 2, duh.
StarCraft, Heroes of Might & Magic 3 or 2? I forgot. Diablo. I mean those games basically define whole genres.
Who wants to help write the Mac canon?
GunShy + RoboSport + Escape Velocity + Burning Monkey Solitaire + the Marathon games. I think that's it.
TOMBOT, Monday, 19 September 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)
what about Bolo?
kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 19 September 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)
I was not privy to the university CS departments or newspaper layout offices where Bolo was a popular pastime. By the time I got my own LAN segment with other Macs on it Bolo was already kind of out to pasture.
TOMBOT, Monday, 19 September 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)
GunShy + RoboSport + Escape Velocity + Burning Monkey Solitaire + the Marathon games. I think that's it.
+ Spelunx + Kidpix (it was a game to me!)
melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 19 September 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)
And Fool's Errand.
Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 September 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)
I thought that! But it was out on PC too. However, then I could include Oxyd and Prince of Persia, which had much superior versions on the Mac.
melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 19 September 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)
OMG LOOM!!!!!!!!!!!! What a phenomenal game.
I see no mention of the Infocom games. Have we all forgotten Zork, The Leather Goddesses of Phobos, The Lurking Horror and The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy already?
The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 September 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)
The original Sid Meir's Pirates was fucking amazing.
~~~~ DODONGO DISLIKES SMOKE ~~~~ (ex machina), Monday, 19 September 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

Hitchhicker's Guide was the only infocom game i ever beat. Even Planetfall had that bullshit copy-protection built into it...

I found a copy of Bureaucracy in its original box with most of the original goodies at a garage sale last month for 50 cents. I sold it on ebay for $11. Woooo.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 19 September 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

The original Sid Meir's Pirates was fucking amazing.

If this is the same as the one on the NES, it's like the greatest game EVER.

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 19 September 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

Defender of the Crown

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

King's quest 3-5 (3 is the best)

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

oh oh oh DUNGEON KEEPER!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

Captain Comic!

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

and CONSPIRACY (KGB in the states I think)!

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

KGB - Amiga Canon. No really bad donald sutherland bits.

jeffrey (johnson), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

is there a place i can download any of these games?

rio natsume, Friday, 23 September 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

You can download many of the best old pc games at the Underdogs (there's also a mac version)

Google will bring up roms for most of the old console games.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Friday, 23 September 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Freeoldies and the classic gaming archive have old games too but really the underdogs kicks both their asses.

syndicate!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

x-com: ufo defense (ufo something-something outside of north america?)

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

x-com had a really odd difficulty curve, per my experience- it was incredibly hard at the start when your troops had no stats, weapons or experience and got jacked by aliens they couldn't even see with regularity, only to panic and wipe out their slightly hardier comrades. then the late game was a piece of cake, zooming from place to place blasting invaders with their own gear, until the final assault, which seemed once again pretty tough.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

also: NGO budgeting simulation! worldwide panics! the thrill of autopsy research!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

X-com underwater was a neat idea, tho deliberately lengthened, it seemed...

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

never bothered with it. after slogging through the land-bound version for months, it seemed like too much to deal with. still have it somewhere!

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Paganitsu
One Must Fall 2097 (only shareware game I ever registered!)
Tyrian
Colonisation (taught me all I know about american history, ha)
Dune 2
Wing Commander: Privateer
