there's something sad about reading through old computer games magazines (the failed promise, the antiquated graphics, the since-then innovations &c.) that you can't quite get from old music mags

If not: SMB3

3 & 2(weird-ass tho it was)

64 had absolutely astounding design when i first played it

kingfish orange creamsicle (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 02:46 (nineteen years ago)

2 gets a raw deal, its awesomessness knows no bounds. But if I have to POO, I'll PO 3.

Mario Is Missing

Will M. (Will M.), Sunday, 6 November 2005 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

The first one for the Gameboy, but I haven't played all that many of them.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 6 November 2005 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that's a great choice

carrey degeneres seinfeld (Cozen), Sunday, 6 November 2005 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

The first gameboy one had some great design. all games should have a bi-plane mario level out of sheer principle...

kingfish orange creamsicle (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 6 November 2005 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

i loved that game so much. family vacation in florida.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 6 November 2005 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

Any game I managed to beat as a kid has a special place in my heart.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 7 November 2005 00:35 (nineteen years ago)

super mario land is terrible! it wasn't even designed by nintendo. the tiny character + first gen gameboy blur made it practically unplayable, but I still beat it in a day.

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 7 November 2005 08:37 (nineteen years ago)

I love Super Mario Land so much. When you shoot the big lion bosses they go "MEOW MEOW MEOW!"

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 7 November 2005 08:38 (nineteen years ago)

Also one thing I liked about it is that it seemed like the sort of thing I could program.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 7 November 2005 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

The Fireballs in Super Mario Land were so wrong. UGH.

This reminds me of the STOP GETTING BOND WRONG thread.

Jdubz (ex machina), Monday, 7 November 2005 23:55 (nineteen years ago)

Super Mario Land was so great. Well chosen.

They weren't fireballs, btw, they were "superballs." They bounced off walls. I kinda liked them.

If Nintendo/Miyamoto didn't design either the game or any of the art, who did? the wiki only lists Hirokazu 'Hip' Tanaka, who did the music.

also, the wiki contains this line: Though a popular seller, the game is now generally regarded by many as being inferior to most other side-scrolling Mario games.

Altho, Super Mario Land 2 was the first who feature Wario, so maybe Gunpei Yokoi had something to do with it?

Say, did anybody ever play a WonderSwan?

kingfish orange creamsicle (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

there's something sad about reading through old computer games magazines

I always am filled with a sense of wonder and excitement when I look through old game magazines! I love reading old GamePros and sometimes I discover great games in them that I ignored when they were originally published, like Alisia Dragoon for the Genesis. Nintendo Power makes me wistful.

allen riley (allenriley), Thursday, 10 November 2005 08:31 (nineteen years ago)

super mario land is terrible! it wasn't even designed by nintendo.

This isn't true: the game was developed by Nintendo's R&D1 group, headed by Gunpei Yokoi, the guy who designed the Game Boy. This group also developed all of the Metroid games up through Super Metroid. Can't get much more Nintendo than that, brah.

from n-sider.com:

Yokoi and his R&D1 group developed some of the Game Boy's best games, including the Super Mario Land titles, Metroid II - Return of Samus, and Dr. Mario, a puzzle game that would also be developed for the Famicom.

allen riley (allenriley), Thursday, 10 November 2005 08:39 (nineteen years ago)

Which is the one, for GB, with the three little pigs as bosses and a lego bit and another bit where a witch is a boss and another bit where there are bees? Because that one was special, to me.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 10 November 2005 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

I am playing SML3 (Wario Land) right now and I can't work out how to get past the second level, apparently I have become megadense in the years since I last played a Mario.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 10 November 2005 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

I unstuck myself. I am an idiot.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:47 (nineteen years ago)

i totally lied about it being paper mario 2 although that is an incredible game.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 11 November 2005 04:16 (nineteen years ago)

I don't understand what Paper Mario is. What is Paper Mario? Why is he paper?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 11 November 2005 04:48 (nineteen years ago)

it's the follow up to super mario rpg. i have no idea why he is paper but it is a beautiful conceit. The landscapes all fold up and you get super paper skillz like turning into a paper aeroplane or boat or fitting through cracks. Plus you fight yr rpg battles in front of an audience which isn't really paper related but it certainly is something.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 11 November 2005 05:28 (nineteen years ago)

That sounds amazing, what is it for?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 11 November 2005 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

Paper Mario 1 is for the N64, 2 is for the Gamecube.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 11 November 2005 05:31 (nineteen years ago)

I will buy the gamecube one.

Nintendo are so strange, that they do things like that.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 11 November 2005 05:34 (nineteen years ago)

i know, i love them so.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 11 November 2005 05:36 (nineteen years ago)

Ign's review is pretty good but i don't think it does justice to how incredible the game looks. It also mentions a few scenes where you play hrough super mario (i think 1) levels but as bowser. They are really great but far too few.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 11 November 2005 05:47 (nineteen years ago)

This isn't true: the game was developed by Nintendo's R&D1 group, headed by Gunpei Yokoi, the guy who designed the Game Boy.

my mistake then! I thought I remembered another company's logo on the copyright but I was mistaken. I still think the game sucks however.

SM64 for platform
SML for 2D
SMK64 for karting
GB Tennis & Golf or N64 Tennis for random pics.

Out of those, at a push probably SM64 overall

jammed hymen (k3vin k.), Saturday, 7 February 2009 19:10 (sixteen years ago)

I'd have to say Super Mario World - just endless hours of entertainment from that combined with the nostalgia factor.

I'd also rank M64 and Mario Galaxy up there because of the 1) fun 2) length of the games, and 3) graphics at the time they were released going well with the Mario world. Although a lot of Mario games are quite long, and that's a good thing.

i couldn't play through the game because of that screaming

Nhex, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 08:11 (sixteen years ago)

i am sad that cozen's screenshot, above, is not a real screenshot and is some deviantart bullshit

is there a ds/gba conversion of yoshi's island that gets it right?

thomp, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 08:21 (sixteen years ago)

yup get super mario advance 3: yoshi's island, apparently some of the sounds are slightly different but apart from tht it's snes perfect. this is wht I'm playing now

there's yoshi's island DS too (by artoon) which is a de facto sequel but by all accounts more like a 1.5. reports on tht one are mixed
