I've heard some griping elsewhere on the net that it's too easy, but I can't remember the last time I found the 'normal' difficulty on a music game interesting enough to play all the way through. I don't even like most of these songs ordinarily and I'm having a blast.

also, i like how it's far harder to play the video game versions of the songs than on an actual guitar. "I wanna be sedated" is NOT that hard, dammit.
and I like how much harmonics are worked in.

I was wrong about reaching the limits of my skills. I am pretty close to finishing the expert level (6 songs left).
This is definitely my game of the year. Psychonauts is more creative and Katamari was great, but Guitar Hero is the most fun for me.

The way we play is: one person plays while everyone watches (and boos when the audience starts to boo in the game, and shouting "You SUCK! Get off the stage!"). The songs are full-length, so if you've got 5 people waiting to take a turn, it'll be a while before you get to play again. But that's okay. I need to find someone else w/Guitar Hero so we can do the two player mode...
― Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)
What I'd like to see with the next game is something that allows one person to play rhythm or bass while the other plays lead, or maybe they can switch off in this respect. Having people trade leads just doesn't work well.

SUNNYVALE, CA â May 23, 2007 â After warming their amps in the basement garage to rocking sold out shows at Stonehenge, fans of Activision, Inc.âs (Nasdaq: ATVI) wildly popular Guitar Hero⢠franchise will now be able to shred like never before with the next iteration of the game that will be available this fall. The new game will be released on the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360⢠video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and Wii⢠video game system from Nintendo.
Turning it up to 11, Guitar Hero fans will channel their inner rock god using Gibson Guitarâs Les Paul and Kramer models as the industry standard. In addition, players will experience an incredible number of newly added features and explosive content including a new multiplayer action-inspired battle mode, grueling boss battles, a bevy of exclusive unlockable content and authentic rock venues. Expanded online multiplayer game modes will also allow axe-shredders worldwide to compete head-to-head for true legendary rock status.
While continuing to retain all the key features from their prior legendary performances, fresh downloadable content will be offered on multiple platforms, and players can now shred to a killer set list from many of the gnarliest rock songs ever recorded. Delivering more master tracks than ever before, strategic partnerships have been secured with all the major and independent music record labels and publishers to allow unrivaled access to their deep history of music catalogs, along with supplying artistsâ original recordings for even greater authenticity.
The initial list of face-melting awesomeness includes:
⢠Paint It Black (by The Rolling Stones) ⢠Cherub Rock (by Smashing Pumpkins) ⢠Sabotage (by Beastie Boys) ⢠The Metal (by Tenacious D) ⢠My Name is Jonas (by Weezer) ⢠Knights of Cydonia (by Muse) ⢠Rock And Roll All Nite (as made famous by Kiss) ⢠Schoolâs Out (as made famous by Alice Cooper) ⢠Slow Ride (as made famous by Fog Hat) ⢠Cult of Personality (by Living Colour) ⢠Barracuda (as made famous by Heart)
For the first time ever, Guitar Hero fans will also be able to thrash and burn with new wireless guitar controllers available for each platform. The exclusive Gibson guitars will include innovative features such as removable faceplates that will allow fans to later personalize their guitars and make it their own, and a new button color design that will be integrated for an even greater authentic feel and rock experience. Gibson Guitarâs Les Paul model will be the battle axe of choice, and an industry standard for all rock gods on the Xbox 360â¢, PLAYSTATION®3 system, and Wiiâ¢. After much anticipation, PlayStation®2 system fans will also be receiving a new exclusive shape as well, the classic Kramer guitar, also a Gibson brand, popularized by hard rockers and known for its body design, pickups, electronics, and construction for furious finger fretting.
âThe development team at Neversoft has been exceptional, and weâve been able to incorporate a host of fresh new online and multi-player game play modes, along with exciting content into this version of Guitar Hero that our fans have been asking for. Also, many of the top bands and songs weâve tried to get in the past are now on board, and weâve definitely got some giant aces in the hole to say the least,â said Dusty Welch, head of publishing at RedOctane. âIn addition, offering a new line of Gibson wireless guitars for each platform is going to truly add to the authentic rock star experience like no other.â
The next iteration of Guitar Hero, published by RedOctane® and developed by Neversoft, is not yet rated by the ESRB. For more information about Guitar Hero, please visit the dedicated community site www.guitarherogame.com. ;"

I bought a guitar hero guitar off of Amazon for my 360 so I'm going to get the Metallica one and waste lots of time getting leet on it. JUMP IN THE FIAH
― languid samuel l. jackson (jim), Thursday, 21 May 2009 11:22 (sixteen years ago)
I played the Metallica one on the Wii, and even though I'm not the biggest Metallica fan (not really a fan at all, but bought a couple of albums during the lol formative teenage years. Surprisingly satisfying when you blaze through the solos from some of the stuff on the harder settings. It's hard to explain, but it seems 'mapped' better. Like, some other games the solos feel like random button mashing, but a lot of the Metallica ones just feel more real... if that makes sense and doesn't sound totally lame.
― CraigG, Thursday, 21 May 2009 18:09 (sixteen years ago)
I recently bought a really crappy cheap third party guitar for the wii, and had a fucking BLAST playing world tour - for about an hour. Now the downstrum won't work, only the upstrum. Effectively, this means I can only play on medium difficulty because on the harder difficulties it's sometimes necessary to strum quickly using both up and down.

Mine is a pretty snazzy official flying V one. I was never going to bother shelling out on one but I got some vouchers and you can't argue with free.
Confession of a lame hardcore gamer time: I've not played any of the Guitar Hero or Rock Band games very much at all, and so I'm pretty bad at them. They're the kind of games that people who aren't hardcore gamers are also in to, so lot's of my friends, who only have wiis or just generally don't spend much time playing games, are better than me at them. I now look forward to sonning all comers after I poopsock the hell out of this.
― languid samuel l. jackson (jim), Thursday, 21 May 2009 18:21 (sixteen years ago)
Did this actually come out for PC/Mac? Most under-the-radar Guitar Hero release ever.
― Nhex, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 23:16 (sixteen years ago)
^looks like that got pushed indefinitely...
Activision really wants to drive this into the ground, don't they? I realized Guitar Hero 5 is coming out Sept. 1 (beating Beatles RB by a week) but then BAND HERO was just announced - for late November! Looking it up I see that DJ Hero's also slated for October. Is there an audience out there that will actually buy all these?
― Nhex, Friday, 24 July 2009 06:35 (sixteen years ago)
I guess their theory is that they'll appeal to different audiences? Band hero is the family-friendly version of GH, etc. I'd definitely prefer a less rockist version of GH/RB, so band hero and even lego rock band are pretty appealing ideas to me (although I've not seen setlists for either yet).

Who would have thought that released 18 GH games a year would destroy the franchise?
The Guitar Hero series is finished, at least for now, with no game forthcoming for 2011 and its business unit to be disbanded, publisher Activision Blizzard announced today -- citing declines in the music genre and a desire to focus on higher-margin opportunities in the online space.

Guitar Hero was the best guitar video game ever and then they ruined it. I continue to hate the Rock Band controllers and their bullshit similarity to real guitars so people can feel less nerdy about the incredibly nerdy thing they're doing.
