the MARIO KART DS thread

in honour of its imminent release i am proposing that MKDS chatter deserves its own thread! i am really psyched about this! IGN has a review online now and they say:

Nintendo's pulled out all the stops for this "next generation" Mario Kart sequel, and though it's a handheld game, there's nothing small about this design. There's absolutely not a doubt in my mind: Mario Kart DS is the greatest Mario Kart game ever, which, in turn, makes it the greatest Kart racer game ever created.

Mario Kart DS's production value is almost staggering. The development team worked an unbelievable amount of focus in nearly every aspect of this racing design, pushing a huge amount of effort in both the single player experience as well as the multiplayer competition. The gameplay depth is absolutely stunning -- Mario Kart DS is incredibly deep in features, so don't be surprised if you forget about some options because some other mode grabbed you by the crotch and refuses to let go. And that's a good thing.

YAY

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 13 November 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. These "online limitations" are a bit of a worry. But otherwise, man, I'm excited about this.

Yoshi circuit from the cube! Yay! I mean, MKDD is flawed in many ways, but I think that course is maybe my all time favourite mariokart track. And moo moo farm too! And Choco mountain! Woo!

JimD (JimD), Monday, 14 November 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

sky garden was hard right?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

I just tried sky garden again...and yeah, it's a little bugger.

I think I'm going to spend tomorrow brushing up on my MK64 and MKSC.

JimD (JimD), Monday, 14 November 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

Is it time yet to start asking who is interested in playing some ILG Mario Kart DS games on wifi?

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 14 November 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

I need a wifi stick and mario kart ds but i reckon i'll be getting them as soon as possible.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 14 November 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

i'm there

i went back to gba mario kart today... it was weird. not like i remembered it at all

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm down

friday, bitches

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

TOMORROW BITCHES. U S A!

adam (adam), Monday, 14 November 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

if we make this thread registered users only we can post up our DS' MAC addresses? or would it still be dodgy to do that even then?

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

TOMORROW!

I can make this registered users only, but that only effects posting, not viewing. It's up to each person, but I think e-mail is probably safer.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 14 November 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

my e-mail is the one below

so... are you buying a DS tomorrow laura?

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

I already put down the deposit. It's the red one bundled with Mario Kart. I'll get it before work, and it's gonna be pretty hard to go all day without playing it.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 14 November 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

So how does the user system work for Nintendo wifi anyway? Do you find other users by username, or IP, or what?

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 14 November 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

There's plenty of detailed info about things like that

JimD (JimD), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Oops.

There's plenty of detailed info about things like that here.

The Friends option refers to a feature that allows you to keep a list of “friends” by entering their individual 12-digit numeric code into your copy of the game. After both friends have mutually entered each other’s codes, the system will retrieve their information upon next WFC logon and the two of you will be available for play via the Friends option. You can store up to 60 friends at any given time, which should be more than enough. However, the unfortunate thing is that it isn’t possible to select which friend(s) to play with – the system simply traverses your list and then chooses for you.

Grr, you're all going to be good at this before I even get to buy it. I hate living in europe sometimes.

JimD (JimD), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I am sure I'll still be terrible at this game no matter when you get it.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Monday, 14 November 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

Videogames ate my bank balance.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 14 November 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

However, the unfortunate thing is that it isn’t possible to select which friend(s) to play with – the system simply traverses your list and then chooses for you.

that is very dumb.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Yes it is, but at the very least you can designate preferred friends who are most likely to be selected.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm really trying to figure this out though--what do you imagine was the thinking behind that? How does it serve anyone to prevent users from choosing their opponents?

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

maybe they figured it'd be too complicated for a simple interface--like what if you want to play with friend B, who only wants to play with friends X, Y, and T, and friend T only wants to play with you and friend Y... etc etc etc.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

that can't be right... I've not read anything about that limitation in any of the other reviews or previews I've read... it seems REALLY dumb, if that's the case

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

badly worded as this is, it seems to be confirmation:

... face-offs are limited to automatically matched 4-track grand prix races. (1up.com)

well STONE me

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if there's any chance they could add more functionality if the player response is really bad.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 14 November 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

how would they do that, i wonder? i guess through the network...?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Slocki, what did you think was weird about GBA Mario Kart? I've gone back to playing it over the last few days as well. It's fun, but my perspective is skewed since it's the ONLY version of MK that I've really played.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 14 November 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

i think i had just gotten accustomed to playing double dash on my friend's gamecube so it was weird to step back down to gba technology!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

but now DS'll feel like a step up!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

I've been playing Double Dash today, and jeez, it's worse than I remembered it, it feels all floaty and loose and not really like a mariokart game at all really.

JimD (JimD), Monday, 14 November 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

just been watching gameplay videos and it looks GREAT

pretty psyched even if the online matching mechanism sounds a bit silly

I'm sure it'll still be heaps fun

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 November 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

yeah and to be honest the handful of people who've posted to this thread already are likely to be the only ones on my list anyway!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

Yup

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

I might be more excited about the mission mode than about online play, it sounds fantastic.

Have any of you got it yet?

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

it must still be pretty early in america??

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

I DEMAND WI-FI ON THE MORNING TRAIN

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

I am getting my DS and Mario Kart on lunch break... very soon!

This would have been an unfortunate day for ILX to stay down. Glad it's back.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

wooo!!

unfortunately i have to wait till thursday!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

OH NO

It turns out the girl at Gamespot took my order wrong, and the DS/Mario Kart bundle doesn't come out for another TWO WEEKS!!

Should I bite the bullet and wait for the bundle, or say the hell with it and get a boring, normal DS and buy Mario Kart today?

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

oh shit!!!!

see if you can find a deal--like i said on the other thread, i bought my DS early largely because i found it for $20 off, which is probably around what i'd save. i think they're maybe clearing out the silver/gray-coloured ones?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I think there's maybe a 70% chance I'll give in... I don't think I can justify waiting two weeks for the vanity of a red DS. :(

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

there should be loads of second hand DS's floating around after the launch of the PSP, or at least that's the case here in the UK

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

I just bought a used DS and Mario Kart. It is charging under my desk at work as we speak. I will be home and playing within 2 hours.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

nice!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

How many friends can one person even have online that are playing mario kart at any moment...1?@?!@/

Jdubz (ex machina), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Got my copy today. Looking forward to being thoroughly shamed by schoolchildren from around the world (and presumably other people in this thread).

I'm actually really excited - this'll be the first time I've played games over the internet since Quake 1, and the first time I've ever done wireless anything. Yay for premature yuppiedom.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

First impressions: This is better than I expected it to be. Coming off Double Dash at least, the slide turns feel different, a little looser, but not a big deal. Played mostly Grand Prix, and the Pinball level in Flower Cup knocked my socks off--rocketing through psychedelic tunnels and swerving around in this giant neon pinball machine with enormous balls and bumpers rolling back and forth around the drivers is wow. Retro Grand Prix is just as fun as the new stuff--It's pretty weird and awesome to be driving on tracks that you remember really well from other games, especially Super Mario Kart with its older graphics. Bowser Castle 2, for example, looks incredibly different now but feels exactly the same. There's a ton of stuff to unlock, and I think it's pretty fair to say that I willingly surrender my life to this game for the foreseeable future.

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 06:31 (twenty years ago)

can not wait!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Have done! :)

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone up for a match sometime this weekend? I picked up my DS recently after a long hiatus and I am in looove all over again.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 24 March 2006 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

Yes.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 25 March 2006 04:21 (nineteen years ago)

Yes!

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Saturday, 25 March 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Jon got me sick, so I will likely be in tonight playing GAMES.

Laura H. (laurah), Saturday, 25 March 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

I'll play.

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 25 March 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

I need the CODES. Do you see.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 25 March 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

I'm on now.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 26 March 2006 02:26 (nineteen years ago)

Did you get everyone's codes?

Laura H. (laurah), Sunday, 26 March 2006 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

No, not yet. The e-mail I'm using here works.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 26 March 2006 03:38 (nineteen years ago)

Eep, I thought I sent them all to your email! Did it cut off all the earlier messages or something?

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Sunday, 26 March 2006 08:23 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, your e-mail just had your code in it.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 26 March 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

Oh piss. I'll compile them into one big list then.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Sunday, 26 March 2006 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

Got it, thanks!

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 26 March 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

the first time you use the Bullet Bill item in this game, not knowing what to expect at all, God winks at you

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Saturday, 8 April 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

By God of course I mean Shigeru Miyamoto, but who's counting

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Saturday, 8 April 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

I felt that way the first time I got splattered by squid gunk.

And really I still feel that every time I go through the pinball chute.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 9 April 2006 06:53 (nineteen years ago)

TOMBOT, what is your code?

Laura H. (laurah), Sunday, 9 April 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

(I have sold my copy of mariokart ds!!)

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 9 April 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

(I thought everyone would be playing metroid hunters instead by now though...has nobody got it yet? I'm going to get colette to bring a copy back from boston for me).

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 9 April 2006 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

(metroid hunters has the single most aggrivating control scheme i have ever encountered!)

sleep (sleep), Monday, 10 April 2006 02:11 (nineteen years ago)

{{}{(to be fair i didn't try it with the thumb strap thing, but with the stylus it's awful)]-]-]0]>

sleep (sleep), Monday, 10 April 2006 02:12 (nineteen years ago)

we don't have a code yet, still trying to get above bronze statues in 100cc over here! honeymooning gets in the way of serious kart practice. I have come relatively close to the staff time trial numbers on the figure 8! Hooray me. learning to do miniturbos is on the to-do.

metroid hunters looks sweet but I can't do FPS! I suck at videogames. Ally is still determined to nail 200 lines in Tetris DS standard mode, she will be online soon to kick everybody's ass I'm sure.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 10 April 2006 05:21 (nineteen years ago)

Which characters/karts do you people drive? I have sentimental appreciation for playing as Toad or Yoshi but I'm beginning to think Donkey Kong might be more my style. Luigi sucks.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

ROB in the JCB digger usually, because frankly, who doesn't love robots and diggers?

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

I like Toad. The heavier players definitely have their advantages, but they just aren't usually my style. Let me know when you're in competitive shape, Tombot.

And anyone else who wants to play as well. I'm on vacation all this week and wouldn't mind a match or two.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
fuck you all!!! you all suck my nuts!

bob loblaw, Saturday, 29 April 2006 01:05 (nineteen years ago)

I still haven't played an online match.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 29 April 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

me either!

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Monday, 1 May 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

Me either, I can't get the WiFi to work at all on the damn thing.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

BECAUSE OF TOM'S SECURITY PERCAUTIONS

JW (ex machina), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

security precautions of being too lazy to hook up the wireless router to the DSL.
Does anybody else notice, though, that the DS kinda has shitty reception? Our iBook picks up signal way better than it does (imagine that, I know).

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

I want to play sometime this week if anyone's down. Anyone who wants to play should:

1) Post friend code here. I don't think there's any harm in posting it publicly. Forwarding the huge email around is cumbersome.
2) Use IM to set up games. Refreshing this page for realtime conversation while people are trying to get their wifi to work is also cumbersome.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

Friend Code:
146089
561453

AIM: brock808
gmail: enemy.airship@

sleep (sleep), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

We should start another thread entirely dealing with setting up friend codes for DS games, I think.

150cc is a bitch! I still can't manage to drift with any degree of skill. The AI is starting to make me feel stupid at every corner.

Does anybody manage to use the heavy characters with any skill? I love being able to pass people with impunity on the straighaways with Bowser but rape me jesus if I have to change directions at any point.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 8 May 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

Have you unlocked ROB? You might like that better.

Laurah (laurah), Monday, 8 May 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

I was not able to unlock ROB yet since I spent most of yesterday figuring out who the fuck in what cart I was able to consistently place in 150cc races with. Dry Bones seems like the best bet so far.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 8 May 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

Does anybody else notice, though, that the DS kinda has shitty reception? Our iBook picks up signal way better than it does

Yes, this is a big issue. Laptop/soundbridge/PSP/other wifi things are all fine running in our living room (2 rooms away from the wifi router) but the DS can't handle it. Which means I have to go into my bedroom to play online. Which is a pain in the arse.

Is the friend code email still doing the rounds? I've not had one yet, and I'll be wanting it soon so I can swap tetris/metroid codes with folks. A dedicated thread is probably a good idea, yeah.

JimD (JimD), Monday, 8 May 2006 23:58 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry, "I've not had one yet" should have read "I've not had one for ages". I did have a bunch originally though.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 00:03 (nineteen years ago)

My aim is them1n0rth1rds, but not googleproofed. I am now going through trying to get stars in everything. I've got all the 50s and 100s and most of the 150s but only a few of the 150 mirrors. Damn you, Rainbow Road!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 01:28 (nineteen years ago)

SUCCESS!

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 11 May 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

this is too easy.

how many times can you play this thing?

i need to dig out my old mario kart on the snes or game cube. that was much more challenging.

i mean, even when i play with fat fucks like donkey kong or bowser on the ds mario kart, i still win! the difficulty level on this is clearly for dummies. or my mum or sister.

titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 3 July 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

You need to hang out with this guy!

Z S, Thursday, 3 July 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

I only just bought this after lusting after it for a while.

do people still do the wi-fi/friend code thing? I want to play multiplayer :(

salsa shark, Sunday, 20 July 2008 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

five months pass...

I have no memory of racing slocki up-thread!!!!!!

this game is so amazing; I just wish nintendo could let go of friend codes and make us all happy : /

cozwn, Saturday, 3 January 2009 02:59 (seventeen years ago)

this thread is old skool. where did laura h go?

cozwn, Saturday, 3 January 2009 03:00 (seventeen years ago)

I wanna finally pick this up (maybe this weekend), but I guess that would mean I have to pick up a new wireless router thing too

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 3 January 2009 06:53 (seventeen years ago)

It's annoying that it took them so long to get WPA working, especially since even by the time the DS came out WEP was considered unreliable. (Basically, the new DSi finally supports it.)

Played the hell out of MK DS for a long time. It's wonderful, I'd break it out again in an instant.
