A thread about game music.

Includes licensed soundtracks(like GTA), full orchestral, 8-bit synth(NES WOOOOO), MIDI, etc.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, i started this thread since i found an essay written by the composer about creating the music for the greatest adventure game ever, Grim Fandando.

I like the nuts & bolts bits:

At LucasArts, we have an unusual studio configuration. The composers' offices are linked to the main control room and studio via audio and control tie lines. This allows us to keep sequencer sessions on a Mac in the composer's office (which contains the full sampler/synth configuration mentioned earlier) and sync them up with a 32-channel Mac-based Pro Tools system in the main studio. That's where all the good mixing gear is. In addition, we can use the tie lines to monitor either room from the other.

Best end titles: MGS1!

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

I recently bought the Resident Evil Soundtrack box set. It's pretty amazing.

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

i really like this from resident evil 4: misao senbogi, shusaku uchiyama - serenity

rio natsume, Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Yes! The Resident Evil 4 disc's probably my favourite in the set (topped maybe by Nemesis) and I don't even have a Gamecube. It makes me want one so bad.

They could compress that whole compilation down into one single "Safe Room" CD. That'd be a real "Best Track Box".

oh yeah, and it should be noted that the music for Fahrenheit(Indigo Prophecy in the US) was done by none other than Angelo Badalementi, dude from Twin Peaks/all the David Lynch flicks...

i really like the stuff used in the demo

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

say, have any games still gone from the really funky lo-fi 8-/16-bit sound for the soundtracks? You know, the kinda think that M83 songs sound like?

Also, micromusic.

rio natsume, Sunday, 18 September 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

also, the ending titles for Tekken 2 were great. If you put the disc in a cd player, it'd play on track 2!

Castlevania: SotN had the same trick, with extra music on the disc.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

yeah you can do that with wu tang: taste the pain.

rio natsume, Sunday, 18 September 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Someone's gotta mention http://www.ocremix.org at some point.

Thar be gold amongst some shit thar.

PlayfulPuppy (playfulpuppy), Sunday, 18 September 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

Richard Bannister's Audio Overload allows you to playback and export to .WAV from all the original ROM musicfiles they have at ocremix.org - I have been debating turning several of the tunes from Bionic Commando into ringtones, but then I just ripped the BC: POW Camp/Neutral Zone cover from The Advantage album, which is fucking great, BTW.

TOMBOT, Monday, 19 September 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

whoa, i never thought of doing that to Bionic Commando.

Hmm. that could work.

plus, i keep confusing the memory of the tune vs the sound effect of the transceiver text.

Oh oh Mega Man 2. I know everyone knows it by now but I really feel passionately about the music from that game. I probably like it more than almost all the real (" ") music that I like.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

Doom E1M1 and the main theme from Quest for Glory really do it for me.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I had that, too, Dan, and it was crap. Not anywhere near as bad as the Alec Empire Breaks His Gameboy Color album, though.

In college my friend Ando got into downloading MIDIs of Mega Man tunes and rearranging them with hot riddims, then playing the whole mess through his wall of synthesizers and drum machines and FX boxes etc before mixing down to cassette. I wish I had some mp3s of that or a CDR somewhere. So money.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

No way, all the ones based on "NiGHTS" were great! Also that fucking tweaked out track based on Baku Baku!

(Okay, the last track was actually crap.)

not to mention I also actually purchased the OSTs for both Katamari Damacy and the JP release of Gran Turismo 3, which is so much better than the US version.

I am going to win this thread. Ugh.

i used to load up Turrican 2 purely to listen to the music on the title screen

title music in Starray (amiga defender clone, best ever in fact)

one of the tunes on Super Hang-on, i think it was the third choice (Winning Run?)

my all time fave though was the title music on 'The Plot' on the Spectrum. beautiful little ditty.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

pfff. the Doom music was so lazy. half of it was rubbish 12 bar blues variants. it sounded like a year 10 midi project.

if anyone can find me the music from Alone in the Dark 2, in any format (including midi), i'll love them forever.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

i used to load up Turrican 2 purely to listen to the music on the title screen

I used to do this with the first one on gameboy. Years later a friend's band recorded a song with almost exactly the same guitar solo, claiming it was unintentional. I love their version as much as I did Turrican's!

if anyone can find me the music from Alone in the Dark 2, in any format (including midi), i'll love them forever.

Amazing! I've got that game on CD somewhere, so maybe I can get the music out of it somehow. It was the panpipes that made AITD. (Strangely, tying in with my reply to Ste, I was in a band about four years ago named after that game.)

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

oh wow, if you can find it, please please please rip them or something for me! i wanted the bouncy pirate tunes for our last in-house game of Pirate Cove, but couldn't locate them. i'll be eternally indebted to you, and will happily let you whup me at CS:S*

*this part is a lie

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, I've just had a bit of a search and no luck, but don't give up hope because I see it around quite a lot and it's with my CD version of Monkey Island 1&2. Also, if I can't find it, perhaps I can torrent an ISO or something (I'm allowed to say this because I own it, right?)

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

for sure.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

I wish We Love Katamari Damacy's soundtrack was as good as the original. There are some really weak songs and some that go on too long, whereas the original was basically flawless.

I really honestly feel that if you switched the OSTs of KD and WLK people would just say the exact same thing about the music being not as good and sounding unremarkable.

TOMBOT, Monday, 26 September 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

I really honestly feel that if you switched the OSTs of KD and WLK people would just say the exact same thing about the music being not as good and sounding unremarkable.

I disagree. I have both albums in my itunes and I listen to the KD soundtrack a lot but I always wind up turning off the new one or skipping to what I consider to be the "good" songs — which are few and far between, imo.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 26 September 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

There are about 4 maybe 5 good songs on the first OST and about 4 maybe 5 good songs on the second OST. If it's up to me it comes down to whether I'm in the mood for one Kenji Niinuma song (Prince & Moon) or the other (DISCO PRINCE). "Kuru Kuru Rock" is pretty great, too.

TOMBOT, Monday, 26 September 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Why do people think the music in the Final Fantasy games is so good?!?

I've only heard the music from FF X, but I liked it because it seemed very incidental and unassuming. It didn't get in the way and held up well after constant replay.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 26 September 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

Did the FF guy do the music for Xenogears, too? I always like the "underground/dungeon/explorey" themes that japanese adventure/RPGs have...

Wilfred Castillo makes awesome music using a gameboy emulator. (click on the music link at http://www.snoopdroop.com/). Listen to You're a Hero on Level Zero and tell me i'm wrong!

I went thru a period of using Zelda sound files for all my mobile phone rings and alerts (receiving a text made the Treasure Chest ditty :D)

It's amazing isn't it.

If you leave the menu on, and play some music on your hifi it almost always appears to blend into whatever track is playing.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

The only good thing about Xenosaga, and it is pretty awesome, is the ambient synth techno jingle that plays when you access the Unus Mundus Network on the main character's little PDA thingamabob. A bizarre Miyazakilike white rabbit thing floats and bobs up and down on the side of the screen while this music just loops, and it actually feels cool and futuristic and imaginative for a while, then you get back to the actual game part of the game and wham, abundance of boring, unappealing crap.

LONDON, UK - In an exciting collaboration with Video Games Live, EMI Classics will release a CD celebrating some of the best known, most popular video game music of all time. The first worldwide campaign of its kind by EMI is linked to the Video Games Live events planned in North and South America, Europe and Asia over the coming months and aims to appeal to a broad audience of gamers, non-gamers and music lovers of all kinds. Video Games Live: Volume One showcases some of the more popular segments that currently appear in Video Games Live. The album contains several unique arrangements that were created along with the original composers exclusively for the show, and have never previously been released.

Video games are arguably today’s most popular entertainment of choice for the 21st century, and the music is central to their attraction. The EMI Classics CD, compiled by Video Games Live co-creators Tommy Tallarico and Jack Wall, who also conducts the recording, features the Slovak National Orchestra, The Crouch End Festival Chorus and The Video Game Pianist, Martin Leung in medleys from hit game franchises such as Halo, Warcraft, Kingdom Hearts, Tetris, Castlevania, Myst and Tron.

Video Games Live: Volume One will be released in two stages: The digital release will be downloadable in the UK from July 7th, 2008, with the option to pre-order from a week before that on iTunes and other DSP’s (Digital Service Providers) with that capability; the release of the CD and iTunes exclusive, including digital bonus tracks, will be staggered to coincide with Video Games Live events, beginning in San Diego, California on July 24th (North America) and Leipzig, Germany on August 20th (Europe and worldwide).

Music in the interactive entertainment industry has come far in the past 35 years, from beeps and electrical impulses to early digital synthesis and sampling to pre-recorded soundtracks. As the games themselves have become more sophisticated, so has the music that drives them and a generation of composers are devoting their energies to writing for the video game medium.

Video Games Live is the largest and most successful video game concert in the world having already performed around the globe to over 250,000 people. The debut performance took place on July 6th, 2005 at the world famous Hollywood Bowl with the LA Philharmonic. Over 11,000 people attended making it the biggest video game concert in the world. Most of the game music played (Halo, Sonic, Metal Gear Solid, Warcraft, Tomb Raider, Myst, Kingdom Hearts, Tron, Medal of Honor, Advent Rising, etc.) had never been performed live. Video Games Live followed with groundbreaking first ever game concert performances in countries such as Brazil, England, New Zealand, Spain, Mexico, Canada, Scotland, Taiwan and Portugal. Video Games Live was also the very first American video game concert to perform in Asia (Korea). In 2007 they were recipients of a major industry award in Brazil for "Special Breakthrough Achievement" following their sold out performances in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Video Games Live concerts have since taken place around the world, selling out multi-thousand-seat venues within hours or days of being announced.

The live concert experience features music from the biggest games of all time. Top orchestras and choirs around the world perform along with exclusive video footage and music arrangements, synchronized lighting, solo performers, electronic percussion, live action and unique interactive segments to create an explosive one-of-a-kind entertainment experience. Special events surround the show, including pre- and post-show festivals.

In the coming months, Video Games Live will perform more concerts throughout the world. Forthcoming dates include: Houston and Austin, TX; Louisville, KY; San Diego and San Jose, CA; Indianapolis, IN; Brookville, NY; Birmingham, AL; Kansas City, MO; Chicago, IL; Newark, NJ; Burlington, VT; Seattle, WA; Kalamazoo, MI; Sarasota, FL and Richmond, VA; Vancouver, BC; Kitchener, ON; Calgary; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Leipzig, Germany; Glasgow, Scotland; Paris, France; Lisbon, Portugal; London, UK; Taipei, Taiwan; Beijing, China. Visit www.videogameslive.com for regular updates of the performance dates.

“If Beethoven were alive today, he would probably be a video-game composer... he was always ahead of the curve. One of his goals in creating music was to control the emotions of the person listening to it. This is exactly what we as game composers are constantly trying to accomplish.” (Video Games Live co-creator Tommy Tallarico)

“A touring multimedia show that has already been seen by more than 250,000 people is playing at the world's finest concert halls — with the world's finest orchestras powering through some of the world's most popular video-game music. And it's attracting a decidedly different audience. There were more than children and teenage gamers … [there were] a lot of grandmas out there.” (NPR – National Public Radio, U.S.)

This is cool, though most won't even be familiar with the original music (game only shipped 10,000 copies in the States). Not sure how many units they shipped to other countries, if at all (other than Japan).

http://store.bravewave.net/album/resurrection-panzer-dragoon-saga-20th-anniversary-arrangement-2

Brave Wave is proud to announce the release of a new arrangement soundtrack for the legendary SEGA Saturn RPG, Panzer Dragoon Saga. Saori Kobayashi, the game's original co-composer, has selected 20 tracks from the original game and given them fresh, new arrangements that will allow longtime series fans to reminisce about the game's iconic music while simultaneously experiencing it in a brand new way.

Joining Kobayashi is Eri Ito, one of the original vocalists for the game. She lends her powerful and dramatic vocals to two songs. Five tracks are backed by the Washington D.C.-based video game music band, Triforce Quartet, with three songs featuring the backing of Boston-based flutist Maho Azuma.

The channel "8-bit music theory" is self-explanatory. Maybe I only find it interesting because I know very little about music theory. Try the video on Mega Man 2 at least.

saw this in the used bins today. may have to go back and buy it. a fucking yars' revenge storybook album. mix of rambling story and actual score with game samples. the song "yars' revenge" is blatantly ripped from "living in the plastic age." "fly yar warriors" is also something but i can't place it right this second. who the fuck made this?

i'm just a complete sucker for that motif when in the 5 chord the 5th steps down to the 3rd. there's for sure something in earthbound like that too. foundational!

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Friday, 28 May 2021 21:37 (four years ago)

i mean, i like the idea but it's so big! You'd have to do it by eras. How do you compare Pac Man interstitial songs to the soundtrack from Journey?
