I had a game for the master system that involved 3d glasses and a light gun. i think it was called something like SDI. it was pretty destroyable but maybe a good effort.

Oh wow, these ones?

I've always wanted to use them. They look like what the Terminator would wear if he were blind.

we had Operation Wolf for the NES. Shit was unplayable. We took it bakc and got Jackal instead.

If it's anything like the one I've got on the Master System you're spot on. Having to keep your toe on the fire button of the second controller so you can throw grenades? Piss off!

melton mowbray (adr), Sunday, 18 September 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

i can't remember the toe thing, tho i'm willing to bet we tried it on other games

those glasses look about right although that plugin port thing looks scary but that's probably only because i haven't had my master system out in abt 10 years. I remember the game, i think it was SDI/Global defense but perhaps not, was built-in because my parents bought me a special light gun 3d goggles pack. It was impressive but i missed out on having alex kidd built in because of it.

s: TIME CRISIS (esp the brilliant playstation port with the separate mode that branched off depending on you pulling off certain tasks), space gun (op wolf/thunderbolt with aliens).

d: that awful one that starred aerosmith. revolution x or something?

deaf leopard (haitch), Monday, 19 September 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

yup, Revolution X. They had multiple machines at the arena when we went to see the "Eat the Rich" tour in 1993. It was pretty much Terminator 2 with a pallette swap.

S: Terminator 2

No mention of "Hogan's Alley"?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 19 September 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Never played that, or Gumshoe. 1st-gen NES titles.

D: Area 51

How did I not say that upthread? It's absolutely horrendous. My local arcade (and arcade machine shop) has had this for years, and I've never seen anyone play it.

melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 19 September 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Dude, i love Area 51 for some weird reason. during my sophomore year, our dorm was adjoining the student union. we'd just go down to the basement arcade to blow steam off with Area 51, along with Tekken 2, and Guns & Roses pinball. the manager of the arcade was a rumored coke dealer, with old-white-guy jheri curl hair!

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 19 September 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Guns & Roses pinball!!

Wasn't there another gun game that was exactly the same as Area 51 but with different characters? Possibly "Maximum Force", but I'm not certain. I think I'm exaggerating in my mind how bad Area 51 is, but I haven't played it in years. The arcade's about the size of your average kitchen, and usually empty, so you feel like an idiot blasting away while the manager sits at his snes playing Street Fighter, trying not to look at you.

CarnEvil! That was another Atari one. I loved that, it's like the poor man's House of the Dead.

s: YOSHI'S SAFARI

rio natsume, Monday, 19 September 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

CarnEvil was hilariously bad. like 320 x 400 renders from 1996.

Maximum Force was the other one, yeah.

and they put out one two years ago. Terror Force or something. Same mechanics, higher res, more timely subject matter.

Did anyone see that episode of Derren Brown's Mind Control, where he made someone think they'd been sucked into a gun game (if not, I'm sure I can find a link)? That was sort of like CarnEvil.
