Gamefly-- Netflix for video games

Given the INSANE rental fees for Blockbuster now, and a whole list of games I'd like to play without paying $50 for, I'm considering signing up. Has anyone tried this? Is it as good as Netflix? http://www.gamefly.com

this sounds like a really good idea.

I've read nothing but bad things about it, unfortunately.
I forget where, I might look it up again.
It's nowhere near as good as netflix, though.

Gamerang.com seems like it might be a better deal? Says they have five distro centers and not nearly as many bitchy customers complaining about them all over the internet.
From what I understand Gamefly's service is severely hampered by the fact that they have only one distro center, in SoCal, and as I alluded to in my previous email address, the games are constantly going missing somewhere in between your mailbox and theirs.

laura h, have you checked out the blockbuster game pass thingamabob? it's little bit of a ripoff, ie it's like $22 and change or something, a wee bit more than the $15/mo i'd really like to pay- but it's definitely worth it for a couple of months to rotate through a lot of games. i've grabbed a few things and returned them the next day if they were clunkers. i'd still prefer if netflix would jump in and do this, but it's not bad and better than paying nearly NINE dollars for a rental!

NINE DOLLARS?!?!??

Yeah I was going to say... most of our local Blockbusters were replaced with Hollywood Videos and their game rentals are still $4 or whatever. I think. I haven't rented one in a while.

Netflix expanding into games would be ideal though.

the UK lovefilm expanded into games, extra £5 per month and you can rent a mixture of games and dvd's, only for ps2 games tho. I might upgrade to it so i can try god of war.

one year passes...

I keep seeing ads for this and I'm really tempted. Have the fixed their distribution issues? I'd be willing to put up with semi-slow delivery (ie, waiting around 4 days between mailing off a game and receiving a new one).

On the webpage it says "We ship our games from Los Angeles, CA, Pittsburgh, PA, and Tampa, FL. The opening of our newest shipping center in Tampa allows us to provide fast shipping across the entire U.S. Stay tuned - more shipping centers are on the way! "

I'm in Ithaca, NY, so I can't imagine that it would take that long to ship to Pittsburgh and back. I'm going to go ahead and try it for a month. It's $8.95 for the first month (for one game at a time, plenty for me), and you can cancel anytime, so if it sucks, it's like I went to Hollywood Video and rented one game for 5 days (~$8 at the one a few blocks away from me).

I just signed up for this. I asked for GTA IV and Assassin's Creed. They sent me Assassin's Creed and Skate. We'll see if this goes beyond the 10 day free trial.

Skate is like GTA IV in that both have characters with legs.

Gamerang didn't work too well for me; gamefly has been reliable and reasonably fast.
They do this new thing where they send your next game when usps scans whatever you've mailed back, which speeds things up nicely.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

I've been using it for about a month now, and yeah, the USPS scan thing has considerably sped up the exchange time. But yeah, don't expect to get GTAIV anytime soon. One time, it skipped over FIVE games in my queue, 4 of which has availability ratings of "medium" to "high", and sent me Advance Wars on DS. Still, I plan on sticking with it for at least a few months more.

I think it's good for gaming dilettantes like myself; I use it to justify owning a system and always having a flow of new software in the house to keep up with what the kids are playing. If I need a GTA/guitar hero/wii fit/mario galaxy type game, I just go buy it.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

Slow shipping times and scratched discs make this totally not worth it.

bnw, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

Never got a scratched disk, fwiw

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

oh hey, I should be getting games tonight ^_^

HI DERE, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

three years pass...

Recently someone told me that if you want to get particular games, make sure those are the ONLY games in your Gamefly queue. If you're willing to wait slightly longer you'll get the games you want instead of something down the queue a bit.

I don't know why this never occurred to me before but it really fucking works.
