why does every damn game have to have a dark and scary haunted fortress? i'm phantasmagorically-fearful.

you didn't play "VTM: Bloodlines", did you?

ts: ghost levels vs ice levels

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 December 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

ice levels are so lazy

snowkitten (g-kit), Monday, 19 December 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

the "haunted house" level of BanjoKazooie was such bouncy fun, but the ice world with the snowman scarf/sledge slide was terrific, so it's evens

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 19 December 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Ice levels are dud, ghost levels classic. Icy shitty slippery play control/getting frozen for seemingly way too long/falling through the ice/running into impeding blocks of ice like a fucking pinball/snow (also terrible playcontrol)/fucking snowmen and snowballs everywhere getting in your way vs. spooky music/Ghost Valley/Boo Diddley/Ghost Houses/Ships/Sunken Ships/Banshee Boardwalk where the ghosts re/de/materialize around you and come flying at you, that is so great.

Also, Kirby.

i agree.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

snowkitten (g-kit), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

I liked the ice world in Billy Hatcher because it had nice music. Ice world in mario 2 wasn't so bad because you could just use princess and float all the time and not worry about slipping. We Love Katamari's is terrific, although that's not really ice, just snow. The rest are all dud though, screw slipping off edges all day.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Eh, I can take or leave that Katamari level. I know part of the beauty of the game is how open-ended it is, but that level is a great example of how the concept could go bad if it weren't coupled with interesting objects/settings. It really didn't have much to it: a lot of snow, some skiers, and a couple penguins. Without a time/size goal there's not much to do but sort of roll around in a white, austere level until you get bored.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 19 December 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

It's essential to getting a million roses, though.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 December 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Btw the Super Mario "in soviet Russia, the ghosts are scared of YOU" concept is brilliant.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 December 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

what about ice ghosts?

latebloomer: Deutsch Bag (latebloomer), Monday, 19 December 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm not scared of ice, but I am of ghosts. And I sorta like level 6 in SMB3… it's where the Hammer Bros suit is located.

remy (x Jeremy), Monday, 19 December 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

does ANYONE like ice levels?

I do, kinda. Isn't it, like, a test of skill?

Chris F. (servoret), Monday, 19 December 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

It would would be great if there were incongruous ice levels in otherwise serious games, like Resident Evil on ice or one of those military sims.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 December 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

The ice level sucks in racing games.
