The Mojo of videogames magazines. Do we hate it? And how many 10/10s have they given out nowadays? 5? 6?

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

I know that mario 64 got one. And Gran Turismo. And Ocarina of Time. And Half Life 2. But I can't remember what else.

Goldeneye?

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

I read it lots in the mid 90s, and kind of hit a point where it was starting to annoy me with it's seriousness. Then I got a job where I got given a free copy every month, and cos it was free I hardly ever bothered reading it. And nowadays I just pick one up every now and again if I'm getting a train somewhere or something, but usually enjoy it a lot more than I expect to.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

it reads like the sight & sound of video games

at least, the one mag i read

whya re there no bylines? is that a UK thing?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

They gave halo a 10. It is good but getting worse.

jeffrey (johnson), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

CLASSIC.

waldo jeffers scenario (haitch), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

ex-staffer ste curran's blog

slocki I think the lack of byline is less a britishes thing than an edge thing! it might be the only mag I've ever regularly read that's done that, come to think of it.

waldo jeffers scenario (haitch), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

that 10/10 list in full:

Super Mario 64, Nintendo 64
Gran Turismo, Sony PlayStation
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Nintendo 64
Halo: Combat Evolved, Microsoft Xbox
Half-Life 2, Windows PC

waldo jeffers scenario (haitch), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

whatever it is, and i'm speaking as a writer here, the byline thing is just weird. i don't care for it.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

i miss the articles by steven poole.

jeffrey (johnson), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
edge magazine's retro game feature, usually my favourite bit, is Jet Set Willy this month, with talkthrough by Matthew Smith himself.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:31 (twenty years ago)

i bought last month's to read on a long train journey. rubbish waste of money and paper and ink.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 20 January 2006 11:23 (twenty years ago)

you didn't even like the cover or the Animal Crossing poster? you must really hate fun. 8)

it does go through dull patches and has way too much japanese rpg information for my liking but i like the design, reminds me of English WiReD back when that was good. i am a sucker for glossy ink on matt covers as well (pattern recognition, stray toasters...)

koogs (koogs), Saturday, 21 January 2006 20:25 (twenty years ago)

nine months pass...
saw the big £8 retro-edge thing in shops this morning (best of Edge 1-12). worth a read?

i flicked through it but the only thing that caught my eye was a review of something called Battlemorph for the atari jaguar. gotta love those flat shaded polygons.

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Monday, 13 November 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

way too soon, jaguar is so not retro.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 13 November 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

i'm jealous of edge's paper stock.

M@tt He1geson: Sassy and I Don't Care Who Knows It (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 16 November 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

oh dear, the KZ2 review has got the internet in a right tizzy

http://www.edge-online.com/magazine/killzone-2-the-edge-verdict

seems like quite a fair review to me

is the ste on ILG ste curran?

a small batch bourbon of web board shitfits (stevie), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 08:28 (seventeen years ago)

Properly failing to see how 7/10 could ever be considered a controversial score.

JimD, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 09:42 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, is it really just hundreds of people who haven't played the game yet going "ZOMG, the bastards didn't give it 10/10!"?

JimD, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 09:47 (seventeen years ago)

Particularly since it's Edge, which has been giving 5/6/7s to otherwise 10-rated games forever!

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 09:51 (seventeen years ago)

This was kind of a good concept, but so many of those were lazy cut-and-pastes of old promo art. Also seems aimed at crazy magazine collectors who will try to buy all 200.

Nhex, Monday, 9 March 2009 03:57 (seventeen years ago)

yeh, how much is that Earthbound one gonna sell for on ebay next month?

zappi, Monday, 9 March 2009 05:09 (seventeen years ago)

Pff, they used the BBC Model B version of Chuckie Egg! Pathetic! </edgereader>

JimD, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

hint: edge 200 comes in a sealed bag so you don't think you can see which cover you're getting. except, it's printed on the back at the bottom left. i only realised this after buying it and am now wondering whether i could've done better.

mine: #189 Tony Vercetti

i like the lords of midnight cover, defender, asteroids. i am very 8 bit.

koogs, Monday, 16 March 2009 09:58 (seventeen years ago)

I got Star Wars Arcade.

JimD, Monday, 16 March 2009 11:06 (seventeen years ago)

had a look today in hammersmith whsmiths and they were all the same as the one i bought from there.

JimD, Thursday, 1 October 2015 12:58 (ten years ago)

that's a fucking weird list

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Thursday, 1 October 2015 13:00 (ten years ago)

probably agree w/ #1 tbh

circa1916, Thursday, 1 October 2015 13:03 (ten years ago)

there's a podcast where the insert credit guys argue for threeish hours about the top 25 or 50 genesis games, which is kinda great--like, the arguing process is more interesting than the list itself, or anything they might have written about it

anyway the arguments were probably more interesting than an £11.99 prestige format magazine with full-page art would be

although if you have four current-gen titles and fucking half life 2 in your top five then you're a bunch of muppets frankly

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Thursday, 1 October 2015 13:04 (ten years ago)

lol at myself for thinking of dark souls as current gen

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Thursday, 1 October 2015 13:05 (ten years ago)

new games > old games

hot doug stamper (||||||||), Thursday, 1 October 2015 20:45 (ten years ago)

I thought they'd gone bust when I saw this revive

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Thursday, 1 October 2015 21:04 (ten years ago)

only allowed to choose one game from a series, and they chose the wrong GTA.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Friday, 2 October 2015 00:30 (ten years ago)

interesting (to me, poss nobody else) that even as a UK mag their few 80s and 90s picks are nearly all Nintendo and no 8-bit home micros, Amiga, ST, etc

(quick nod to Tetris's pre-Nintendo history but it's probably not the DVK-2 version which has won it a place, right)

a passing spacecadet, Friday, 2 October 2015 09:56 (ten years ago)

it's cuz they're a bunch of noobs

idk yeah i don't think of edge as coming out of any british gaming culture, they have always seemed like omg miyamoto is god types?

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Friday, 2 October 2015 11:42 (ten years ago)

i bet they gave shenmue a really good review

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Friday, 2 October 2015 11:42 (ten years ago)

24 – Drop7

come on now

Do you feel guilty about your wight western priva (ledge), Friday, 2 October 2015 12:00 (ten years ago)

is the point that its "video games" rather than "computer games" on this? if not, where the Fuuuuuck are doom / quake

jamiesummerz, Friday, 2 October 2015 12:07 (ten years ago)

wrong Elder Scrolls game too, this list is godawful

nameReinhard Gruhl/name (Noodle Vague), Friday, 2 October 2015 12:10 (ten years ago)

xxxp to thomp, I guess so - think the first issue I bought was in '96 and had Mario 64 on the cover (the next issue also had the N64 on the cover), so yeah

suppose they were always about "evolving" gaming past its old image, being more shiny and modern and designer than the competition, a deliberate move away from the other '90s Future mags with writers who'd been there since Amiga Power and the 8-bit mags, etc

still would've expected at least one person on the staff to throw in one or two titles but eh, I'm prob just old. maybe including the new Elite is a token nod to the "prob just old" demographic

a passing spacecadet, Friday, 2 October 2015 12:16 (ten years ago)

The Last of Us is a token nod to not-games
