When Video Games Make You Sick

Not really a parody thread. My brother got a Virtual Boy for Christmas.

15 minutes of Mario Virtual Tennis and I had to lay down. I came real close to vomitting.

Wow, lucky! I almost splashed out on one of those last year but didn't because it was sans-manual and I obviously wanted an even bigger hole burned in my pocket.

Playing Gameboy on the bus to thread.

Shit, I totally want a VB. Just for Wario Land.

I remember playing the demo at Toys R Us. My mom would always pull me away because she knew it'd kill my eyesight.

Playing Gameboy on the bus to thread.

Oh yeah, I tried playing MarioKart DS on a long car trip last week and it made me ill. Dawn of Souls was no problem though.

i couldn't play goldeneye from feeling dizzy. i was ok with Quake tho. i think it was the speed of turning

Watching someone ELSE play Doom/Quake, or somehting like Colin McCrae or Gran Turismo. The lack of control over the movement I guess? Urrgh.

katamari can be deeply stomach upsetting if you play for the first time on a big screen and / or are drunk

What FOV setting does each game have? I remember reading somewhere that the FOV setting in HL2 had to be altered for the boat ride bit because it caused motion sickness in too many people...

three months pass...
I get sick in each and every game I play developed after 2003 with a phony first person perspective -- that is, one where you see the car or the character, only the camera isn't consistent in relation to the character -- in curves or while taking a sudden stop, the "camera" swoops over or around the character/car. This has spoiled the GTA games for me COMPLETELY, and I have to pick my driving games very carefully (the more recent Colin McRae's are out, for instance). Is this a problem that developers are aware of?

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 20 April 2006 17:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure what you mean, the camera doesn't swoop over the player/car when you suddenly stop in GTA.

do you mean you prefer a more 'sticky' camera, which would remain behind the car when you turn/handbrake stop ?

In an old job we bought a huge interactive whiteboard thing with an SVGA projector and I tried playing life size Doom on it. I felt like hurling within 3 minutes.

Does anyone know Gynoug on the Megadrive? Might have been released in America as "Wings of Wor" (which I remember was what it was going to be called here, but they stuck with the original name). Some of the effects in that like screen tilting and shaking really make me chunder.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Thursday, 4 May 2006 23:50 (twenty years ago)

Ste: didn't check this thread -- yes, I don't get sick when the camera perspective sticks consistenly with the bumper, hood, whatever.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 5 May 2006 07:48 (twenty years ago)

I said this on the other thread also, but can't you just pick the "in-car" camera then?

The Yellow Kid, Friday, 5 May 2006 17:09 (twenty years ago)

In-car is an improvement in some driving games, but not the newer Colin MacRae's nor for the GTA games--because it's not a real in-car perspective in MacRae (the camera swings around a bit) and because you spend so much time out of the car (and on motorcycles especially) in GTA.

Need for Speed Underground 1 & 2 are about the only driving games I can play any more without wanting to barf. :(
