TROPICO! You too can run a banana "republic"!

Anybody play this one? This was one of my favorite games from 2001. I always thought it was a hilarious & charming mix of city building and laconic voice acting in spanish. Being able to click into the heads of each citizen("Yay! I'm freee!" as they leave work) to the stern reproaches of the game("El Presidente, you have an election coming, you know...")

I've read that the sequel(involving pirates in the caribbean) was not nearly as compelling.

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 10 February 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

i played it!

it was... ok. i didn't find it THAT fun.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 February 2006 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

I liked the first one. The sequel was not nearly as compelling.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 10 February 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

I play this game every summer religiously, when the weather's too hot to do anything else. The music just works so well!

melton mowbray (adr), Saturday, 11 February 2006 01:33 (nineteen years ago)

snowbray OTM! this game is so good, i bought it TWICE. i damaged the disk for the first copy, whoops. but yeah, the music is fucking amazing. the sequel was good too! not as amazing as T1, but it was still really good fun. it had PIRATES! how could it fail.

i'm gonna tig out Tropico and give it another go sometime soon. or at least buy the soundtrack.

the kit! (g-kit), Saturday, 11 February 2006 09:18 (nineteen years ago)

i think the first one had an expansion pack too, i never tried that.

jeffrey (johnson), Saturday, 11 February 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

I did. It was cute. You could let Yanqui tourists run amuck on your island.

According to the PopTop site, the sales for the game(along with Railroad Tycoon 2 & 3) sold like 3 million.

Tropikos: a Mediterrean-based mod.

website for the guys who did the soundtrack.

Looks like one of the eco tourists from the exp. pack was Lara Croft:

I hope I still have this game somewhere, and didn't sell it when I liquidated all my games two years ago.

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 11 February 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

I bought the combo pack, so I didn't realize the tourists were part of the expansion. They fit in really naturally, anyways. It was a nice enough game, fun for a while.

okay, i finally played the sequel. the trappings are cute, but it's not nearly as charming(or as funny).

four months pass...
REVIVE! because i'm playing this again. Summer is here.

i have trouble being a SCUMBAG in this game. i played through a whole game, determined to oppress the locals. all i managed was to pay the farmers a shitty wage. even though it was a total police state and corrupt soldiers pretty much did as they pleased with their HUGE wage packets, the people were pretty much content. i totally walked the last few elections. even though they were poor as fuck, they had all their needs fulfilled, so they didn't give a shit.
i finished with a faily decent score.

So, i'm trying again. i've played 20 years so far. Elections? PAH. GO FISH. first assassination in the bag. he was protesting! another protester in prison. housing is CRAP and EXPENSIVE. lots of protestors this time. hopefully i'll build up my military before it all kicks off (and i really do think it will, this time).

fucking great game.

Wow what a game. You can have your own dictatorship! Assasinate election rivals! Can pineapples! I can't beleive I'd never heard of it til now.

i get bored with games like this so quickly

Machibuse '80 (ex machina), Monday, 10 July 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, this wasn't nearly as entertaining as i'd hoped.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 10 July 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

i liked the look & feel of the game, and the expansion pack helped. it's not something that you can play to any length like Oblivion, but it's great to come back to now & again.

i just wish i could get the voice to call me "Don homer" instead of "el presidente"

kingfish cyclopean ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 10 July 2006 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

sure, it's not like oblivion; but that's the appeal of Tropico for me. unlike Simcity and most other city/strat type games, you CAN play & finish a game in an evening if you wish. it doesn't seem like a neverending, open-ended game, so there's a real sense of urgency to get things done. different strokes for different folks, i guess, but i've had this game installed on 3 different machines since 2001, i always come back to it. a true classic, imho.

teh_kit has 22 friends (g-kit), Monday, 10 July 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Could I take a moment to invite the people that just expressed disinterest or disappointment in this game to (ahem) BITE MY SCROTE. I thank you.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

It is really fun. Probably not ideal for your instant fix casual gamer but if you have half a brain it's a great game.

Darramouss ftw! (Darramouss ftw), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 00:16 (nineteen years ago)

As someone with only half a brain I concur, this is a great game. Trayce, you and your full brain should give it a go and tell me what happens when you don't get overthrown and end up sailing away from the island with little or no money left over.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

YES!!!

I played like 10 games of this last month. This is the only game I've bought TWICE and installed like 4 times. Can't get enough of this.
I'm getting a bit too good at it now.

Oh fuck you, simple BBcode button. why 2 be so hard 2 remember :(

melton mowbray, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 06:55 (eighteen years ago)

When you click on and see the thoughts of your random Tropican, he always leaves work saying something like "I'm free! I'm free! Time to drink!"

i still say this, like, daily

kingfish, Sunday, 10 June 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

there's some TV ad on at the moment with similar music to one of the Tropico tunes, and every time it comes on, i bellow "PRESIDENTE! U DO NOT HAEV ENUF ELECTRACERTY 2 POWER ALL TEH BUILDINGS ON TEH ISLAND!!11", or "YOUR PPL STARVE! GRO MORE FOOD, QUICKLY!!!!111", much to my girlfriend's dismay.

g-kit, Monday, 11 June 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

I was trying the dome out of this today. Gad. it's hard! (and slow). Fun though. Can't figure out how to grow properly. Most frustrating.

kv_nol, Monday, 11 June 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

crops take a good few years to grow and end up at the docks. pretty much every farm/industry you build will run at a defecit while you're waiting for shit to be grown/processed/collected/loaded onto ship, so make sure you've got the funds to suck up the suckage before you start building your next project. also, make sure you grow on fertile land (duh), grow a variety of produce as land condition changes over time, make sure you grow enough foodstuff and not just sugar/coffee.
as for being slow, well, i usually play the whole game on Very Fast, which is over in a few hours.
don't forget to build new construction/teamsters offices when you expand!
as soon as you get the knack for setting up a fairly decent economy at the start of the game, you can pretty much forget about cash flow troubles and focus on keeping the people happy/oppressed (depending on how you're playing, obv)

I love this game so much. HAY GUYS WE SHD HAVE A TROPICO TOURNEY!!! (one that actually happens)

g-kit, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 07:52 (eighteen years ago)

i found the soundtrack on slsk - this makes work much easier

g-kit, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

"Your island is disgusting!"

One of sad things is that I didn't realise I had to grow the crops for the factories. No wonder I was bleeding so much cash!

kv_nol, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

that's quite a considerable nooberror.

g-kit, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

i am srs about Tourney btw. register your interest here. if it's more than just me and meltang, it may actually happen. in fact, it'll probably happen even if it's just me and melton.

g-kit, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

I need to get the full game first! I might be interested as soon as I stop making such bad mistakes.

Wai 2 +1 confidence teh_kit LOL ;_;

kv_nol, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

sorry. i kinda assume that anybody that tries this game will immediately buy it.

I've been hung up on PS2 for yonks. Will check tomorrow on ebay for a copy.

kv_nol, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

what is the soundtrack listed under? I get nothing but fucking black heart procession when i hunt on slsk

kingfish, Thursday, 14 June 2007 06:29 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks for advice. Bought it with Stronghold as a bonus game (or something). If I get addicted and lose +1 I blame you both! Especially you Kit.

kv_nol, Monday, 18 June 2007 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

Will totally be on for tourny obv cos after a week I'll be totally l33t and shit.

kv_nol, Monday, 18 June 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

I've also tried playing Anno 1701, another "build an island town"/god game. It's not nearly as amusing.

kingfish, Monday, 18 June 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

Have you played Stronghold?

kv_nol, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

Teh_kit should post his walkthrough here. It is brilliant!

kv_nol, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I remember Stronghold from my unemployed days sitting in my parents darkened basement in mid/late 2001, avoiding looking for a job by d/ling stuff offa Kazaa, watching repeats of Buffy on FX and drinking 20oz of Mt. Dew all day. Not my proudest moment.

"WOOD needed!"

kingfish, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm I don't think I'll be playing it so. Sounds like it's laden with bad karma!

kv_nol, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

i gained like 20-odd pounds that way, and finally heard _Loveless_, which I'd listen to on repeat while staying up til sunrise playing NOLF/Stronghold/AOEII/CIV3 or whatever i could get ahold of.

kingfish, Thursday, 21 June 2007 06:07 (eighteen years ago)

What had you there in the first place? Post-college decision blues?

I really haven't given Loveless a chance. Must try it again sometime.

kv_nol, Thursday, 21 June 2007 09:42 (eighteen years ago)

Actually that is very nosy and probably not something you would want to discuss. Problem is the Inquisition Edict runs deep in me!

the concept of this game is really gross. a breezy take on latin american political violence, muy divertido. eh but so is civ i guess.

it kind of sucks anyway! everything takes too fkn long. like, ooh i wanna build a hotel! then you finally finish the thing and it's like 25 years later.

Tried Tropico 3. Gave up because of roads. Looks great though. I'm very behind the loop.

hyggeligt, Saturday, 27 September 2014 00:32 (eleven years ago)

What was your issue with roads?

polyphonic, Saturday, 27 September 2014 18:53 (eleven years ago)

They just wouldn't follow a natural route i.e. fit in gaps between cliffs that were clearly meant for roads. They kept bending everywhere and it was impossible to build small stretches. Very annoying.

hyggeligt, Saturday, 27 September 2014 22:45 (eleven years ago)

never played this - 3, 4 and 5 are available on the mac app store - T3 costing half of the others. Is that a good one to dig in?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 28 September 2014 09:48 (eleven years ago)

Tropico 3, 4, and 5 are all pretty similar. Obviously the newer ones are a little deeper with more options, but graphically they're basically the same. Tropico 3 was my first one and I played it to death.

hyggeligt, I hear you on the roads thing. At some point I got the hang of them and it wasn't an issue anymore, but early on I struggled with it. The key for me was getting a hang of the camera, but the auto-curvature can definitely be finicky.

polyphonic, Sunday, 28 September 2014 22:11 (eleven years ago)

I uninstalled in frustration. Might go back. Camera controls a bit frustrating as well.

Essentially this is a game that rewards patience. I have none so no rewards!

hyggeligt, Sunday, 28 September 2014 22:19 (eleven years ago)

4 is better than 3. 5 is still developing.
