The PlayStation 3 will be one of the worst game consoles ever made.

1. Blu-Ray will still cost $$$ WHOLESALE. Ha ha ha ha ha oh wait I'm the consumer.

2. There is no way on Earth this imbecile is going to come up with an online service that "beats Xbox Live."

3. Sony is like the absolute worst company on Earth when it comes to proprietary content distribution. I mean #1 already covers this, but based on the PSP, is the PS3 supposed to be a set-top entertainment center for the 22nd century and beyond, or a game console?

4. The hardware is "barely better than the 360" but will arrive a year later and with an even bigger pricetag, by all accounts.

5. The controller has yet to be finalized. Meaning all games are being programmed for the dual shock II.

6. Actually the hardware design isn't finalized either, since it's apparently not yet possible to fit everything into the case AND include a 2.5" HD.

7. pick out one title from this list that could make it worth buying this machine at launch (Gradius 3 = comedy gold?)

8. Blu-ray read speed (load time) is evidently not that much greater than current DVD. Additionally, games are being developed for 10x DVD load times anyway. So between this tidbit and #5, what exactly does this thing do that my PS2 doesn't?

Once again stalled out @ #8. Is Sony ready to die?

TOMBOT, Monday, 13 February 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

yet you know you'll buy it just for the really japanese games

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

I think I can live without Magic Funtime Spanking Frenzy VI.

Dan (Speaking For Myself) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

They lost me on the regionizing a generation ago. After a friend of mine had one for both N. America and Japan (didn't even chip it, just bought two!) and I realized there were a lot of games that interested me that would never come here because the developers just honestly didn't care enough and Sony wasn't about to encourage them.

Nintendo's already shown a willingness to port the japanesiest of their systems' games to N.A. and a pretty unmatchable level of skill and care in localization.

I seriously doubt that the otaku market is enough to keep this one alive.

TOMBOT, Monday, 13 February 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I didn't just mean for the imports, I mean for the stuff that is regionalized but still really fucking japanesese. I think that the PS2 was the box from the last gen that had the most overtly japanese games.

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:26 (nineteen years ago)

I'm also all set with Twee Bullshit Kawaii! XXXVII: Ultimate Furry Complex.

Dan (Fuck A Next-Gen) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

The PS2 was also the box from the last gen that came out with overwhelmingly exciting launch titles and an incredibly competitive feature set for the price. (plays DVDs!)

No nonvolatile memory storage - No unified online service - Only supports the next-gen standard that MSFT REFUSES to get behind and that everyone else is straddling the fence on, waiting to see what the real wholesale costs are going to be - No "killer app."

Treading on thin ice with that price point. There's a certain class of people in this world who are willing to pay that kind of premium for something based on brand alone instead of functionality, and they don't play video games.

TOMBOT, Monday, 13 February 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

goddammit, now I can't find a graphic of that japanese spanking/finger-fucking arcade game

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

Come on Dan, you're so negative. Think of those simulated 16-y.o. lycra-sheathed camel toes in 1080p widescreen HD. Isn't that worth $750 to you?

TOMBOT, Monday, 13 February 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

but you don't need japanese games for that, or even for the gratuitous butt shots

Also, the font in the logo of the Playstation 3 (at least, the one we've seen in promo shots) is the same as that in the logo of Spiderman 3. What sort of scam are they trying to pull?

I bought Edge today solely because of the cover headline:

"PLAYSTATION 3 VERSUS THE WORLD - Has Sony already won the console war?"

I'm yet to read the article, but I hope they're being sarcastic.

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

PS2 did a lot to lose all my interest in Sony, but fuck it. XBox is for spods and Nintendo don't got no GTA, so there's only 1 console I'm likely to want.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:48 (nineteen years ago)

Noodle vague OTM, except I'll get a Revolution as well. Probably sooner, if they can promise 6 great titles in 3 years.

Two obvious points: The weird cool games wouldn't be on that list up top anyway, because at this stage of course it's only Sequel VI: The Subtitle, and other stuff that makes me want to die. Also what's pointedly not on the list is GTA. If Rockstar decide that the 360 is the way to go, then Sony probably are completely fucked.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 01:06 (nineteen years ago)

the hell is a "spod"?

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 01:15 (nineteen years ago)

What I didn't give Sony credit for are the Eye-Toy and SingStar games, which must give the PSes a hell of a lot more mass-market appeal than X-Box. I guess Sony themselves don't make a big deal of those titles to hardcore gamers, but I reckon they make a big difference in console sales. In theory Revolution could crack the party gamer market big time, but Nintendo's marketing in Europe is pitiful (dunno about other regions).

my name is latebloomer, please take my hand (latebloomer), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 05:53 (nineteen years ago)

MGS4 isn't going to be a launch title, nor is GTA Goes To White Castle.

Messrs. vague, Farrell, and bloomer have sort of made Reggie Fils-Aime's point (which is also mine) about the PS3 - in a market which shows all signs of shrinking, not growing, how can a company hope to recoup the expense of developing and marketing a new piece of bleeding-edge tech (which itself is a loss leader designed to create sales of blu-ray "content" and even more expensive games) when they are only playing to their current customer base (and only a fraction of that, since DDR works fine on the old model)?

I mean we're talking about a PORTION of the installed base of PS2 users buying the new console at what purports to be very significant expense, just to purchase one or optimistically TWO game titles a year. The fate of the PS3 at this point seems to very emphatically hinge on the adoption of blu-ray as the next-generation media standard that everybody needs to replace their DVDs with, and I'm not buying it, at all.

$20 says the 360 will still have more interoperability with the PSP than the PS3 when it comes out.

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

With relatively young children, if we ever get round to buying a Next Gen console (and personally I reckon anybody who buys one in the first 6-12 months of release has more money than sense) then it needs to offer a broad range of game types, and that still means Sony or Nintendo. PS3 wouldn't be the first Sony product to outsell technically better consoles on the strength of its broad appeal to casual gamers. Is Sony ready to die? Doubt it. Are consoles on the whole getting worse? Maybe. I seem to mostly play PC games and emulators nowadays.

latebloomer: yes...that's a human ear, all right (latebloomer), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 07:33 (nineteen years ago)

Has there ever been a successful system which did have a launch roster full of great games? Isn't it normal to launch with genre-bound titles that don't take full advantage of the hardware? Nintendo seems to have this thing where they cannot launch a console without there being a really great Mario platformer ready for it, but not all companies do, do they? I don't know how to search google for what game rosters particular old systems launched with, but I just don't remember there initially being great games for, like, Genesis or Playstation 1 (or even playstation 2?).

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 08:25 (nineteen years ago)

I've never purchased a new console at launch time, cept for the Saturn i think, due to there never being any decent launch titles available. (sega rally? great fun but hardly long lasting)

I'm only going to buy ps3 for GTA, res evil, and then maybe some other bonus games, anyway. i may get the nintendo for zelda but i said that about the cube and i never bothered.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 09:40 (nineteen years ago)

Japanese launch of the Playstation (Christmas 1994) might not have had much, by the time it launched in Europe it had Tekken & Wipeout. It's strange to think that all those 'defining' titles like Tomb Raider & Crash Bandicoot & Resident Evil & FFVII appeared later.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 10:08 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know that Luigi's Mansion qualifies as a great Mario platformer actually

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 15:17 (nineteen years ago)

Weren't Mario World and Mario 64 available at their respective launches?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

I was just pointing out that the Gamecube is the exception that proves the rule here.

Launch titles and console success have very little to do with one another, especially if you use the Dreamcast as any indication. I guess the thing I'm really trying to bring home is that Sony's "Sequel XVII: The Subtitle" launch selection doesn't bode well for the machine's lifetime. I guess if you can keep FF, MGS and GTA on your platform for initial release you have a solid base, but one slip and you're toast. $500 is a lot of money to most folks.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

Eventually the system will drop to about $300 and only then will I even consider buying it. And by then, there will probably be a few games worth buying!

Yeah $499 is what most folks are assuming at this point. Sony already came out and flat admitted the thing's going to be "expensive" FFS. They just assume, I think, that the brand identity they've built is so rock-solid that everybody will get the fucker no matter what cost, they just have to make sure they have enough units to meet demand. They're thinking to ship 100m units worldwide. I'm like what.

anyone know why my blu ray player on the ps3 gives out a crap audio service? For every movie, for people talking the sound goes quiet, then as soon as there are explosions or some such its friggin noisy as fuck.

we gotta move these refrigerators (CaptainLorax), Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

Ste - It sounds like you have an audio setting wrong. What kind of set-up do you have? I'm going to guess you have the ps3 outputting blu-ray audio for 7.1 or 5.1 audio set-up, while you're actually putting the sound through regular tv stereo speakers or a more basic stereo - or vice-versa. I don't have a ps3 in front of me, but I'm sure in the settings there is a place to adjust the blu-ray audio output so that it matches whatever your system can best support. The other thing could be your stereo receiver isn't set up balanced correctly, if you have one.

JCL, Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

yeah its just a basic tv system speaker. what should i have the setting as. on the actual blu ray i've tried both 4:1 and 5:1 (default) but to be honest i couldn't notice the difference. i'll have a look in the ps3 settings on the menu, when i've finished watching this film!

PSOD (Ste), Saturday, 31 March 2012 18:02 (thirteen years ago)

ya it should have nothing to do with the ps3 but the way bluray discs are mixed and mastered.

tv is mixed for tv: everything compressed and loud and upfront. blurays and dvds tend to be mixed more like movies in the cinema: lots more dynamic range, dialogue usually in the center channel, etc.

can you change the audio output settings from 5.1 to just stereo? that should help.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Saturday, 31 March 2012 21:13 (thirteen years ago)

I had the same problem, but it was caused by my AV amp; it has different dynamic range compression modes. I cycled through those til it sounded normal. It's still not perfect but way better than it used to be

CraigG, Sunday, 1 April 2012 10:21 (thirteen years ago)

EZ Snappin, Monday, 9 April 2012 16:54 (thirteen years ago)

In Story Mode, the player plays through missions centered around various animals. Eventually, the player will discover the truth behind mankind's disappearance.[2] A Pomeranian dog and thoroughbred racehorse are key characters in the story.[1]

In Survival Mode, the player takes control of an animal and fight for survival against other animals for as long as possible. Tokyo Jungle has online leaderboards so the players can compare their survival skills against one another[1]. Smaller animals will fight in groups, and the player's group can win fights against larger animals by just having one of the group survives the fight[2].

The player will have to build up a pack of animals. This is easier for some plant eaters, which means the player may not necessarily be at a disadvantage even if a weaker type was chosen[2].

There are 50 breeds and 80 types of animals to be expected[2]. Animals confirmed for Tokyo Jungle include lion, crocodile, tiger, giraffe, hippo, cheetah, chimpanzee, gazelle, chicken, beagle, tyrannosaurus, hyena, and fox[1]. As the player plays through the game, additional playable animals will be unlocked[2].
